I'm hoping that they completely disregard the EU when making the ST. Trying to have a good story that can follow on from ROTJ, while trying to have the EU as canon and having to stick to the plotlines etc that have come from them, would just be too constricting.

throw it all out and just have the continuity stick with what was in the movies only and we may have the chance of a good ST. Sure the EU fanboys will be up in arms about it, the same way as they have been about the Clone Wars series destroying part of the EU, but it's the only serious way a ST could be done especially if it has Luke, Leia and Han in it.

I would agree to a slightly more moderate form of this. There are certain foundational elements established in the early days of the EU that I would hate to see contradicted or retconned (such as the establishment of the New Republic with its governmental seat on Coruscant, Luke's Jedi Academy on Yavin IV, and Han and Leia having their three children [Jacen, Jaina, and Anakin]), and I'm no "EU fanboy" by any stretch of the imagination. Beyond those foundational elements, however, I'm in favor of the EU's various plotlines being completely ignored, since, as you say, any attempt to harmonize the ST with all of them would be utterly constricting. (Especially given the horrifically tangled and incoherent nature that has come to characterize the EU's "web" in recent decades.)

Wow, no Asians in the OT, eh? Someone's been tampering with my TESB again, clearly, and RoTJ too.

And Vader's only in the prequels for a minute? Again, damn my copy of RoTS - it must be a pirate recording.

Only one woman in the OT? Yup, I always knew Mon Mothma was a drag artist.

I agree that the new trilogy should disregard the EU books - they're bloody awful.

I did say the leads.

So the, "There's too many of them!" guy and the, "Now there are two of them" chaps don't count.

If the OT can have more than one male lead the PT and ST could and should have more than one female lead.

Both on the protagonists side and the antagonists side.

Why no Sith Ladies?

Any road up, yeah as I said disregard the EU, as it makes the EU more fun watching the Wookieepedians hammer all those square pegs into cruciform holes.

It really does start to resemble a religious text when you have five different reasons for the big nosed bounty hunter to be on that street corner that day and they all have to be reconciled.

Which guy is this?  Would love to read about it on Wookieepedia.

Anyone remember different camera angles from ROTJ?

^I think this is a very good thing. And re: prequel merit - I personally believe the prequels do have merit, and could argue as to why, though I don't think there's much a point to that. The fact of the matter is, though, these films are NOT going to just ignore the prequels. It just won't happen.

I was being facetious/sarcastic, but I do stand by the opinion that the new movies need to be their own thing.

The ultimate downfall of the prequels is that they were completely subservient to the OT.

While the new movies will pick up threads from either or both sagas, it's important to not constrict them to trying to explain or connect every little detail to the OT like the PT did.

That's why I cringe a little when I read comments on the net with people saying, "Do this character! Do that story!" Recipe for disaster, in my opinion. Let the new movies breathe.

I agree with Adywan.

Star Trek TNG was it's own thing, but we got a cameo from a TOS character right off the bat. More followed a few years on.

If there's a logical reason for an OT character to appear, I'm all for it. It's just natural to wonder how our old friends ended up after all these years. I can even survive Anakin's ghost showing up, if it's important to the plot.

We probably could all agree on which character we don't want to see return though? ;)

Actually, I was going to say Hayden's Anakin (IMO, even more devastating to the PT's integrity than Jar-Jar, Kung Fu Yoda, and the Neimodians combined).

Yes, I'd rather suffer through 120 minutes of Jar-Jar then a 5 minute cameo of Hayden Christensen as ghost Anakin.

He wasn't in the first one and that stank.

I was thinking George... and David Lynch (it was his suggestion that George do ROTJ which possibly contributed to everything going wrong... including Dune.)

Granted. He wasn't the PT's sole problem, just (IMO) its worst.

They seriously need to bring back Sy Snootles and the Max Rebo Band (as puppets, of course).

Episode VII should just be about them.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I asked about THX over at the HTF, and was told it probably resides with American Zoetrope.

It looks like it's Warner Bros who owns it along with the distribution rights going by the DVD/Bluray cases of the 2004 cut, no mention of Lucasfilm at all. But I guess that American Zoetrope have a say in it as well. There really should be a petition started in order to get the 1971 studio cut and 1978 restored cut released.

I agree with this. Apparently, the DVD doesn't even mention the changes in he documentary or the commentary. The changes to Raiders and American Graffiti may be minor, but the ones for THX 1138 aren't. We should raise awareness. I wonder if its Lucas holding that up, or if a release of the originals just isn't seen as profitable. There's a joke thread over in off-topic about expanding the petition for this site on social media, but if someone was willing got ale it more seriously, we should start a grassroots movement here. Star Wars OOT, AG, ROTLA, and THX are all issue which loom over this; Lucas has made a serious issue here regarding revisionist history and film preservation, especially with the Library of Congress issue and denying the AFI the screening of the original prints. This is an important issue, and I think more should he done to raise it. We SHOULD fire up Twitter, Facebook, etc. and try to make some noise with celebrities and publications and try to get the word out.

It's not so much about the actor himself for me; it would just suck that Anakin would appear as his younger PT self for a whole scene or even a whole movie.

Also, Jake's Anakin was nearly as unpalatable as Hayden's.

I really didn't find Jake Lloyd's acting to be half bad.  He was a innocent kid, and it worked.  I was more upset with the fact that I was actually seeing Darth Vader as a 10 year old.

The fact of the matter is, when the prequels were announced, most Star Wars fans expected (wanted?) to see the story of a good and noble man, Anakin Skywalker, tragically turned evil by an extraordinary dark force in the universe.

Instead, we were given a child, a teenager, and a young adult, each portrayal more cringeworthy than the last, slowly corrupted by horribly predictable and selfish reasons.

At least with the ST, I have no expectations.

It was an annoyingly precocious child star performance.

Not the kid's fault (mostly like Carrie Henn's in Aliens mostly) like all the actors he was trusting that director and the editor knew what they were doing when they were obeying orders.

Agreed. My beef is more with the character than with the actor, and that goes for both Jake and Hayden. (Though, that being said, the bad acting didn't help matters much. Admittedly, much or most of the blame for those poor performances should be shouldered by George Lucas, especially in the case of Jake Lloyd.)

I'm not saying Hayden is a great actor but I dare you to read this aloud trying to make it sound like you actually mean it and keep a straight face, let alone give a good performance:

"The thought of not being with you...I can't breathe! I'm haunted by the kiss that you should never have given me. My heart is beating, hoping that that kiss will not become a scar. You are in my very soul, tormenting me. What can I do? I will do anything that you ask. If you are suffering as much as I am, please tell me."

No disagreement here. I've never seen him in anything else, so I don't pretend to know whether he has any acting talent at all. Even if he did, though, the PT never gave him an opportunity to let it rise to the surface. Even extremely talented actors can only do so much with utterly deplorable writing and directing, and the PT was chock-full of both...

Jesus. Honestly, just reading that, tip of my hat to Hayden. It could have been A LOT worse.

We all know Harrison Ford's famous quote about saying the lines George writes? ;)

I've seen Hayden in a drama called "Awake" in which he was good too.

OMG, I hadn't checked my emails for a few days!! What a fool I was to subscribe to this topic. Haha!! I had like 200 topic update notices. It will be impossible for me to read every post, but the recent bombshell thrown at fans by George Lucas sure has promoted some lively discussion.

Just one thing I hope is that Disney remains true to Lucas's vision and doesn't adopt a version of the "Lord of the Rings" or "Harry Pothead" style. Just because those kinds of films were successful for younger audiences today does not mean that Star Wars should throw out the Force in favour of magic. Lucas sometimes delved into the world of witches and magic with the Ewoks cartoon series and Clone Wars. In small doses it works and compliments the idea of an all-encompassing life Force. It concerns me a bit that a style like the Italian fan film Dark Resurrection may be adopted which could send Lucas's original vision way off track. Any future SW films will need to remain true to the original idea.
