One more order followed by an out of stock (on the first item you need on Page 1 of the manual!!!!) from Lego and I have just scraped the 75% pieces on order target I set myself.

I am going to wait till I actually get my 4 orders delivered, make sure I have not messed up and wait for the piece above to come back in stock at Lego as it is dear via Bricklink.

The magic 10p a piece average price I had in my head for my version is still on target. If I achieve, I may even swallow my pride and spend £30 on that bloody dish!!!!!!

All in all, I am happy with progress so far.

Maybe this should become a more general purpose Star Wars obsession thread because as amazing as the project sounds (do people really spend that sort of money on plastic bricks?) it could become a bit of a blog after a while.

What do you say?

I've got loads of Star Wars Gameboy games (I think all of them) and no excuse to play them as yet.

Star Wars is too big a thing to obsess over every possible aspect of collecting or building so it could be cool to have a series of interlocking testimonies forming a vibrant multi-stranded thread.

Or am I being out of line?

You mean like a thread devoted to a specific project?

Yeah weird :-D

I just made the suggestion because this sounds like a real labour of love.

Brick hunt, plan befuddles, whole thing snapping in half heartbreaks etc.

It just might be interesting to compare and contrast to extend the scope of trial and tribulation beyond the single spaceship 3D mosaic.

The Star Wars origami fella is great, and seeing his numerous models are interesting but it would be interesting to see other paper craft efforts on the same thread.

It would be cool to see lots of different patterns and photos of other models as I say just to open it out more and extend the longevity of the subject.

You should see what people spend on action figures

If I had the cash I'd be sorely tempted to get that lego falcon too.  And the lego death star, it's pretty rockin'.

Picture only posting of animated GIF depicting a man spitting tea in surprise saying GOLLY GOSH JINGS CRIVENS!

Somebody couldn't wait for King Tut to die before raiding his tomb (methinks it must be a romantic ultimatum and love has conquered all as per).

Cool project, good luck. :) How long do you think this will take? Is this some kind of "eternity project" where you build it every now and then over the years finding cheapest deals or are you trying to do it as quickly as you can?

And in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as the Son of the Suns.

This is a one off, once in a lifetime, one time only, build it once, put it on the wall and leave it there project!!

The plan was to get a few bits each month over the next 6 months but in reality, I have ordered 88% of the bits in two weeks. It is just soooooo adictive!!

However, I am running out of local sellers that have more than one or two of the items I need. So, I am going to buy the last couple of items that Lego are out of stock of and maybe just buy the balance in bulk from them.

My first batch of parts have arrived and I am amazed how big just 750 parts actually is but of course, the finished thing is HUGE so why am I surprised???

I suspect it will be next year before I get all the bits and make a start.

Looks pretty cool.  Best of luck!

I wish that I could just wish my feelings away...but I can't.  Wishful wishing can only lead to wishes wished for in futile wishfulness, which is not what I wish to wish for.

How's it coming on this?

And have you heard of anyone trying to use bricklink to build the Death Star 10188? If I could do it for under $200 (without the minifigs), I'd give it a shot.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

Sorry about that. This thread is long overdue an update.

17 orders and 5139 pieces later, everything is ordered with all but the last 500 already in my possession. Total cost is just under £550 which is way under my £700 guesstimate.

90% of the pieces were ordered in the first 4 orders but the last 10% were a pain in the neck to get and took 13 orders to get hold of.

14 orders were from Bricklink, 2 from the Lego Replacement Parts Service and 1 from Lego Pick a Brick.

If anyone was looking to do anything like this, I suggest the Copy and Paste method from the Bricklink inventory page into Excel, get a rough idea of the cost of each part from Lego or Bricklink and work out a guesstimate price and see if it is feasible. The Bricklink Wanted Lists are fantastic and make life so much easier.

Regarding the still available 10188 set, I suspect $200 is a bit on the low side but would be interested to see how you got on. However, some of the forums think that this set is to finish production shortly so it might be worth buying the full set retail while you still can and selling the minifigs on ebay to bring the price down.

Meanwhile, despite my insistance that this was a "one time only" thing, I am drawn towards the 10030 USC Star Destroyer.........

I just completed my 10179 and I followed what you mentioned however I didn't realize the wanted list feature till later after I had made several orders.

Overall cost including shipping of my orders I built the 10179 for $880.00 US or 660.00 Euros to you. Like you 95% came from Bricklink and 3 orders from Legos.

Using Excel and then researching each item and finding best price really helped. If had just used the wanted list sooner I could have made less orders and saved a little more on shipping costs.

I am proud of my 10179 since I put more into it than someone who went and purchased original item. I am looking at 10129 Snowspeeder and 10212 Imperial Shuttle (since it was newly retired I think I can build it less than the $250.00 retail price tag.

Ooooooh. You made that hard work!!

A Wanted List aligned to a spreadsheet that tells you exactly what you need, what is left to order and what has arrived is a must have in this project. Seeing everything hit zero gave me a nice warm feeling!

I am in the UK so my £530 equates pretty accurately to your $880. I had major success painting the black rigging to LB grey so that should look good as well as saving a fortune.

I finally started my build last night and have just put the 6 legs on. It is looking really good so far although I am torn between wanting to rush it to completion and wanting it to take for ever...

I will take a picture or two and get them uploaded to show progress.

Hi guys, this is my first post here, and I thought I'd share my experience since it is this thread that led me to BrickLinking my own 10179 ...

Everything has been ordered, just waiting for a last couple orders to arrive.

It was fun to hunt for all these pieces, but if I had to do it again, I would certainly buy a complete box (for a time there was one seller in Switzerland who had it for ~2000 USD).

I spent a total of ~1700 USD (including shipping and taxes) in approximately 30 orders.

The only substitution I've made is the 47996 rigging, couldn't spent 125 USD a piece so I went for the black one.

Everything else is in the right color and 95% pieces are new.

I'll try to analyze later in detail the 30+ orders I've made, here's the first two :

- 2404 pieces (166 lots), new condition: 400 USD

- 1585 pieces (65 lots), new condition: 500 USD

So these 2 orders brought me 80% of the pieces for a little bit more than half the total final spending.

So, what went wrong ?

I definitely could have spent less (maybe 1/2) if I had bought mostly Used pieces instead of New, but I wanted pieces in really good condition. In retrospect, that's a bit ridiculous since many pieces are part of the structure / hidden inside the hull.

I could have settled for more color substitutions, but then it's not really the same, is it ? I also thought that if (big if) I have to sell it one day, the right colors will make its future value.

Also, the first order I placed for this project was about I month ago, so all the pieces were ordered in about 1 month. I could've waited to find some pieces at a more affordable price and combine the orders differently and maybe save some $.

Maybe some are surprised by the number of orders, I must also say that I tried to stay (legally) below the radar of the customs, as here in Switzerland imported merchandise above ~50$ is taxed 11% (8% VAT + 3% value) + some flat processing fee.

I also tried to cap the shipping expenses, trying to stay in Europe. There are good stores/sellers in the US, but shipping is expensive (USPS) unless you're ready to wait 4+ weeks for an uninsured parcel.

Finally, there are some rare/overpriced pieces that, if you chose the original color (that's what I did), will set you back immediately about 300$ (without shipping costs) :

- 100$ for 47 dark bluish gray bricks 1x16

- 40$ for a used 10x10 radar dish with printed pattern, more if it's new

- 180$ for 60 light bluish gray levers

- and I'm not even speaking of these 2 boat mast riggings at 125$ each ....

So, my advice to whoever would like to engage in a similar quest: settle from the start for the color substitutions that you're ready to do or not, and wether most of you parts are going to be in used or new condition. That's what will determine if the final cost is closer to 800$ or 1600$ ...

Ironically I just finished my build half an hour ago....  I will post some pictures later.

In reality, my choices to make the build more affordable ie a blank radar dish, painted rigging, 60 black levers etc, do not detract from the fact that the 10179 Falcon is quite simply a monster build!!

The colours are almost irrelevant as it is the pure scale, size and detail of the thing that makes it what it is as this link shows.

I am extremely pleased that two people have actually been inspired to actually go ahead and build their own 10179 Falcon and with two others looking into doing this as well, I say that this thread has been a success.

The next step for me is to go ahead and wall mount the thing which I am really looking forward to seeing completed.

I do have loads more info and links so if any one is tempted to have a go themselves, I am more than happy to deal with them via PM rather than annoy anyone else on this thread.....

Here is a pic of the finished thing as promised and I will try to do a few more detail shots later.

Have I enjoyed the whole process? Yes.

Would I do it again? Yes.

Would I recommend others to have a go at the same build? Yes.

In fact the only thing I regret is making it as similar to the official release as I have done. In many ways, I prefer this (Post 113) or this, but please do not think I am complaining because I am not!!!
