Dreamaster : Could you clarify if your cleanup here was done from the original scans of the grindhouse, or from the grindhouse release itself (and therefore a re-encode)? It matters due to the upload rule of some sites which would allow the former, but not the latter.

If I’m remembering correctly, for v2 he got sent the original openexr scans from the grindhouse.

Dreamaster wrote the source in the very first post of this thread.

After fighting with doing some correction by hand, I got to thinking more and more about Dr. Dre’s color tool, so I finally got up the courage to ask him for a copy, and then went and watched Williarob’s tutorial on how to use it. Around this point, Williarob sent me the Prores files for the Grindhouse project so that I can make adjustments reel by reel and work from the original source. In order to use Dr. Dre’s tool, I needed to match frames of the Grindhouse reels to identical frames from another source. I had two sources to work from, Adywan’s 1080p 1997 SE version, and Harmy’s version. I specifically looked for places where both Harmy’s and Adywan’s were as close as possible for the first pass “reel” correction of each reel. As an example, the shot I chose for Reel1 was this one:

I have to say reading this post has made me want to tackle this project too. My Grindhouse source is only 25gb so hats off to you for having access to the ProRes file! I have Vegas Pro 16 as my NLE. I’ve got most of the laserdiscs for reference, and I’ll probably use the 1987 Japan Special Collection for the digital audio track to sync. If I remember right the print(s) have some audio issues.

I also have neat Video for noise reduction. Man does that make a difference. Pro 16 has a stabilize feature, so the scenes on the ship deck can be easily fixed.

It’s on usenet. You can use Bluto’s great guide to learn how to do that.
