Deep Space Nine and Voyager LaserDisc Preservation Project

Hey everyone! I’m the creator of DS9: Redefined, a project that completed a restoration and HD upscale of Star Trek Deep Space Nine, and I’ve now been working on Voyager.

About a week ago, a member of the Discord sent a clip they had captured from a Season 2 LaserDisc using the DomesDay Duplicator. This enables you, with a small mod of the LaserDisc player, to capture the RF signal directly off the disc to a computer, and use software to decode the signal and convert it to digital video. The quality far surpassed my expectations!

I believe the LaserDiscs of DS9 Seasons 1-3 and Voyager Seasons 1-5 could represent the best quality of these episodes that were ever publicly available. And so I’ve decided to start a project that will preserve the episodes from these discs, and also provide a better quality source to make new upscales for these episodes. I already have a few donations with which I was able to order a Pioneer LD-V2200 player, as well as order a disc of the the 3rd and 4th episodes of DS9. We’re working on getting the DomesDay Duplicator and other required parts. But by far the hardest part of his project is going to be sourcing all of the discs.

If you’d like to support this project, head over to https://ds9redefined.wordpress.com/laserdisc-project/ or join us on the Discord (https://discord.gg/fzeRAUX8gz) to learn more!

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a LaserDisc of DS9 before. But the quality jump here is really something compared to the DVDs.

I don’t have anything I can contribute to this other than my admiration and encouragement. It’s not often I can see the difference in quality on my phone screen but it’s like night and day.

Great find and best of luck with the project!

UPDATE!

This LaserDisc project has REALLY taken off! A number people donated and I was able to get a LaserDisc player, the DomesDay Duplicator and all associated hardware needed for capture, and a lot of the LaserDiscs! Ivan found his way to me, along a few people he’s been working with, one who has also been capturing and collecting discs. We got cloud storage and workflow worked out and we’re working together to get as close as we can to 5 copies of each disc (we’re already there on a number of episodes), and the quality is looking SO good! I should be able to start completing upscales from this source in the next few weeks.

Of all the projects on this site, this is the one I would be most interested in directly supporting. The discord link seems to be expired, however. Is there a new link to join to keep up to date?

Did you figure out how to receive the RF Signal to the domesday duplicator from a Pioneer LD-V2200 player? I have a ld-v2200 myself and looking on the boards underneath I only see a shielded cable with one pink wiring with wording on board saying ground and rf, audio and more. Unplugging the cables to the CN61 and CN60 ports I don’t know which board to use if I’m using a BNC cable since both look like they’re sharing data. Splitting and separating the cables wiring altogether including the BNC cable that’s able to connect with the DD stops the player all together. I can’t find where a RF Test point is on the player. If it’s unplugging the cable and tapping into the top or bottom board expecting no video but the player plays the disc, could you get the signal that way?

It would be nice if you could use a pioneer ld-v2200 player with a domesday duplicator
