Day of The Dead BD Project, help needed.

I have been trying to gather what I need to make this happen, it seems that the US video is the superior version for this film, however the audio is censored, so I was going to take the 5.1 audio from the Arrow BD release and use it on the US video, but it seems to me after listening to the clips that the Arrow BD release is not what it claims, it is not fully uncensored, a couple voices sound different and the gun shot is still muffled, so what I need to know is this, does anyone here have the R0 Arrow 2-Disc DVD Set of Day of The Dead Special Edition UK release? this according to DVDCompare.net has the uncensored audio in 5.1, if so can you please listen to those parts and see for sure if this is truly uncensored?

here is the link to dvdcompare

http://www.dvdcompare.net/comparisons/film.php?fid=677

just scroll down and you can read what lines are different, and there is a link to actually here both good and bad versions.

Thanks

*Edit, I think I am going to need this DVD Set right here,

Interesting... I did not know that. What specifically sounds different? Any actual dialogue changes you noticed?

The changes are in the dvdcompare link I posted above, scroll down to the bottom, all info is there, there is even a link to listen to the areas of concern, so do you have this DVD?

I just checked the Arrow BD. Some of the defects are corrected here:

- "Shit" still "shit, not "Right"

- "Oh Jesus" by Sarah is correct.

- "Jesus" by Steel is correct

Still Bad:

- "It's Crazy"

- Gunshot

- "It's the spic"

As its stated for the US BD: The mono track is not affected.

I just wrote Arrow Film an eMail, asking if there any further BD releases planned with complete corrected Audio.

that sucks as i was the person who pointed out to arrow via their forum at cult labs that the 5.1 remix that AB did was censored and sent them all the links

Thanks, that is exactly what I found as well, so until I can find the full 100% uncensored audio I guess this is on hold.

but I have read that the Arrow Films UK SE DVD listed above may be corrected.

The bad thing on that arrow DVD may be that it is stated to be PAL. So you would have to speed the buggy scenes up. And if you want to use one audio stream completly, you have to speed the complete audio up propper, and sync it to the BD video.

I just checked the Day of the Dead german languaged bootled BD. I seems to contain the anchor bay audio stream with all censorship. The official Austra BD just contain 2.0 audio.

Well from what I have read that Arrow Films UK SE DVD is 5.1 and truly uncensored, but I will most definitely not speed the audio up, I will slow the 5.1 down and use the snippets I need, no offense but I can't stand PAL speedup and will never use audio that way.

When I wrote "speed up" I meant "speed down" :) just a bit mixed up here.

We could be lucky that with HD the PAL speed up is almost a matter of history, at least a fading part of ancient Video times...

I know what you meant lol, now the hard part is finding this DVD and verifying that it is truly uncensored, because the darn Arrow BD was supposed to be but isn't.

Amazon.co.uk don't sent this movie to germany any more. I am glad I got the BD, but after they figured out a release is banned from Germany they stop shipping it, and I ordered the BD before they got the hint.

This post is off-topic to DOTD but relevant to DVD audio vs blu-ray audio.

Unfortunately the problem of incorrect audio speed is not entirely solved. It is fixed for blu-rays of movies, but there are still some problems with TV shows that are dubbed to another language.

As you might know in germany everything gets dubbed and everything released domestically includes at least the german and the original audio track. The problem with TV shows is that these are dubbed for TV at 50Hz and broadcasted this way. When this show is released on blu-ray the disc can either be at 50p with the correct german audio but incorrect original audio or 60P/24P with correct original audio but incorrect german sound.

There are several blu-rays with this effect, sometimes it even happens with big budget movie releases. The german release of LOTR EE is a well known example. The original german DVD release of LOTR EE had pitch-corrected audio at 25fps. This was slowed down to 24fps for the initial blu-ray release. Warner Home Video has fixed this and you can replace the wrong discs, but it shows that there are still some issues left.

Yeah, I know that there are some issues left. I have the "wrong" LotR SEE Box. (preordered it) with the replacement discs. But the problem here was that warner made a mistake just respeeding the audio track from DVD (PAL) source. the original track was made for cinema, running 24 fps, so dubbed in correct speed.

The 4% peed won't been noticed in audio, if the companies would did the speeddown right... in normal movies the speedup is not really noticable, if you are not knowing the movie in correct speed perfectly.

The NTSC thing with ~29 FPS is more noticable, when the moie seems o "jump" sometimes, because of the inserted frames to get it from ~24fps to ~29 fps...

As someone living in Germany, born German.. (no, I have no tendencies to conquer the world.. thats an austria thing, when they are politicians somewhere else.. :) ) ..raised german languaged, no english roots, I surely know that most things are dubbed. (Not all indeed, I have some german DVDs with no german audio, but just subtitled.)

But for now: back to topic :) other PAL/NTSC/HD discussions in seperate thread, or PM. :)

OK here is a very small clip with all the errors hopefully fixed, please take a listen on a surround system because I need all channels checked, this is just a DD 5.1 sample, the new track will be a DTS-HD MA 5.1 completely in synch with the US Blu-ray.

Thanks

Well I haven't gotten any feedback yet on this clip and being impatient as I am lol I went ahead and put it in synch with the US Blu-ray and encoded a new DTS-HD MA 5.1 track and burned a test BD, I will watch and listen to it tonight, I just hope I got it right(fingers crossed).

This is great! I thought I was the only one who noticed these audio flubs in the DOTD BD. Anyone know why they happened in the first place? Censorship doesn't really make a lot of sense....

Author

Sorry, didn't get a chance to upload and give it a listen. :( Is the new audio track in perfect sync with the US video? For my own initial project I had to take out some "black space" frames from the US in order to get it synced to the UK cut.

Author
Time

Sorry, meant to say "black space" frames at the beginning of the video as there was about a second's worth before the film starts.

Author

Sadly I have no 5.1 System, yet.

But I listened to it closely, and I have to admit, that it sounds great. Only Parts I am not sure is the "It's Crazy" and the shot.

I would say, that the MAIN of "Its Crazy" is correct, but the 4 other streams are still the changed voice...

(I made a wave file with eac3to out of the ac3 so I could listen to every single stream in the file...)

There is a lot more to it than just that alone, if that is all you did, then your version is not 100% in synch I can tell you that, because there are spots where it goes way out and then comes back, then goes way out again, so you might want to re do that if that is all you did, I went through the whole timeline on my uncensored fixed version.

The mono track is supposed to be the original theatrical audio, so there you go, problem solved ;)

From what I gather it's the DVD that doesn't have the original audio track.

Would anyone be interested in taking a crack at the video for DAY OF THE DEAD?

The Anchor Bay and Scream Factory releases have their pros and cons and I think the ideal presentation would lie somewhere between the two (ie. the AB transfer, minus the DNR + something a bit closer to the Scream colours, minus the contrast boost).

Fortunately, the French BD seems to use the Anchor Bay transfer and without the excessive de-noising or squashed (to 1.85:1) presentation.

I have it and would gladly fix somebody up with a copy should they wish to pursue such a project.

Anyway, you can check out the various versions here:

That didn't answer the questions at all.

1.: Even if the japanese BD has a higher bitrate compared to both US releases, I still don't know if the image quality is any better, compared to the newer US release.

2.: Even if there might be a synced LaserDisc Audio, which is great (thanks for hinting it), I now just need to find it, without using torrent (using torrents in Germany got quite dangerous), it still doesn't answer the question if the japanese Audio is uncensored itself.

So, next time, if you use your tongue smiley, make sure you did at least answer questions you are seem to mock about with your smiley.

Edit: Just to answer my own (second) question, I now know that the japanese BD Audio is censored in all 6 stated points.
