Darth Bane

Just finished the Darth Bane trilogy of books. As EU go, they're a hoot, although I start skipping pages near the end.

One thing bugs me about the Rule of Two.

If I'm an evil Sith Lord, motivated by Greed, Hatred, Selfishness, and all that, and I'm awesome and really dig being a Sith Lord... why do I train an apprentice and instruct them to SOMEDAY KILL ME.

By definition I'm evil, greedy, full of hate, and selfish. How the hell does someone like that hold the ideal of the Sith Order's Rule of Two so much higher than self-preservation?

The idea that a 1000 years of this could happen without any Sith Lord saying "Nuts to this, I'm the Dark Lord of the Sith until I die comfortably of old age" is a bit hard to swallow.

That type of loyallty to an ideal from a Sith is like a really well run Organization of Anarchists, or the Biweekly Newletter for the Society that Hates Reading and Writing.

Yeah, Darth Bane's story is part of the backstory Lucas invented for TPM and the PT and nothing about the PT story seems to work very well.

It only makes sense if the Sith truly believe that they are the good ones and that that struggle for power strengthens them and at the same time ensures that the best Sith is always running things.

On the other hand, having about 1000 Sith is probably better for their purposes than 1 really awesome guy and an apprentice.

I've been thinking of reading the Darth Bane books.  I can't find them in audio ANYWHERE and I'm not sure I want to read them well enough to, you know, actually read them.

IT'S MY TRILOGY, AND I WANT IT NOW!

"[George Lucas] rebooted the franchise in 1997 without telling anyone." -skyjedi2005

"Yeah, well, George says a lot of things..." a young 1997 xhonzi on RASSM

"They're my movies." -George Lucas. 19 people won oscars for their work on Star Wars (1977) and George Lucas wasn't one of them.

Rewrite the Prequels!

The rule of two = less money spent on real actors.

Though it does have some strengths as an idea, if the Jedi were organised along the same lines it would have meant less tedious council meeting scenes.

If anything hundreds of Sith against two Jedi would have made for one hell of an interesting story.

Sith council meetings would be much more fun to watch too (it would be like a cross between Kurt Douglas in The Vikings and Hellraiser with laser swords).

Meanwhile the two quiet sages would sneak in and go all Kill Bill on their black clad arses.

I read the third one and thought it was really bad.  Like Dark Empire bad.

Drew Karpshyn could have done a better job.  Almost glad he never wrote a kotor III with how bad the third bane book was.

People will do a lot of strange things in the name of religion. In that sense, the sith are not entirely selfish, since their selfishness is actually a means to the survival of their order. Of course with Sidious it kind of ended up all blowing up in their faces, because he was constantly plotting to find more powerful apprentices to replace his current one. In that sense, he was the most selfish of all Sith since he'd plot the demise of his own apprentices instead of the other way around.
