I am posting this here cause it does have something to do with the new Batman movie and I wasn't sure everyone here would visit the political thread

I've more or less restrained myself from posting in this thread. Simple reason. Majority of my posts in this thread would consist of:
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! New Batman movie is coming out soon!!!!! EVERYONE MUST SEE IT!!!!!!! EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THERE IS A NEW BATMAN MOVIE OUT SOON!!!!!!!!!!!!
OMG!!!! GUYS!!!! The Dark Knight Rises will be out soon!!!!!!!!
-----------------------
....Yeah mostly that. So be happy that I held off posting here that much.
Also, BATMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Christopher Nolan's response to Rush Limbaugh's comments, “I’m not sure how to address something that bizarre, to be honest. I really don’t have an answer for it, it’s a very peculiar comment to make,” made me laugh.
I was happy for getting a ticket for our local theater's midnight showing.
Then I came back from lunch and our high school intern was on her way out to see it because her friend works for the theater.

I like that poster! Adam West was my hero when I was a little kid. He actually had the opportunity to play Batman seriously on the final season of the old Superfriends cartoon. I was in nerd bliss when he turned up as the Gray Ghost on Batman TAS.
And Mr. Limbaugh needs to reduce his "intake" and learn how to google things before swallowing his foot on the radio. ;)
Where were you in '77?
I sincerely hope no one here was in the middle of the terrible thing that has happened overnight in Colorado.
Movies have always been a "safe harbor" to me. Some of my happiest memories are from being in a movie theater. For someone to do something like this sickens me and makes me angry.

I was going to go to my local theater at midnight, but I was too exhausted.

My first thought, and really my only thought on it currently, is that I truly hope it had nothing to do with the film itself. In The Dark Knight, the Joker was presented (in viral ads, as well as in the film itself) as a character to look up to. Someone who isn't bound by the rules and pressures of modern society. Someone who is beyond the commoners.
The film, and in particular the year-long advertising juggernaut, nearly glorified that sort of calm, almost joyful disregard for human life. Thousands of people embraced the character as an awesome achievement, not just from an acting standpoint, but from a sort of "an answer for our times" viewpoint. People couldn't wait to "be him".
That fucking endless cultural loop of "some people just want to watch the world burn" was grating, to say the least. I worry that someone acted on it last night. The mask, the smoke bombs, the calm ending of human life - sure seems like more than a coincidence.
very sad to hear.
i doubt this will make a dent or impact on the movie
release though. people will still go in droves though.
which they should if they are interested.
it's not like this will happen again.
but hopefully they will keep what happened
in perspective.

Seeing as a degree of cosplay is a given at premier showings if this was meant to be a sociopathic metacomment on the film series he would wear a Scarecrow mask or a Bane mask, not a gas mask.
Indeed he would probably have gotten more instruments of destruction into the theater if he was dressed that way as people would assume they were part of his 'costume'.
People who have a tendency to do this sort of thing will do this sort of thing.
Doublethinking culture and events like film premiers too deeply in order to prevent these sort of events never works.
The fact that we haven't had an atrocity of this kind at a 501st get together or a Zombie walk is proof to me that these sorts of people are rare and garner uneven publicity because it serves people who want to limit cultural expression and civil liberties.
Insane killers are insane killers they aren't made insane killers because of comic books, video games, music or films.
Horrible. The midnight show became almost like a rite of passage in your teens. Agreed that it hopefully has nothing to do with the film's story, lest there be attempts to place blame on the filmmakers. (Much as with the crimes blamed on Clockwork Orange) A cinema is the one of the few places in the world to me that is truly sacred. What really disgusts me beyond that is the fact that this obviously happened while the movie was playing with people sitting unaware in the dark. (As a Hitchcock nut I cannot fail to see the parallels with the similar scene in Saboteur.)
I should see the movie later today at the IMAX.

Excellent points Bingo. I hope my thoughts didn't come across as a call for any type of censorship - they aren't that at all. I just hope it was the type of random nutjob you mention, as opposed to a carefully researched plan. I hope he picked last night to crack because he just happened to pick last night. My rant was more of a frustration.
It would be even more reassuring (as inappropriate as that might sound, given the circumstances) if he wasn't even sure which film he was walking in through the exit of. I'd hate for this to lead to any type of artistic suppression. The handling of how art is presented should be left to the potential viewers.
If this thing snowballs, or worse, has copycatters - we might have a TSA sort of entrance to theaters. If that's the case, I'll be getting that 60" plasma after all.
I imagine there would be a degree of local publicity for the local premier.
These sort of people seem to crave publicity and it's a shame they get what they want because statical evidence exists that the more publicity these crimes get the more they are copied.
A guy I went to college with was in that theater. He got 8 bullets, thankfully none hit anything vital. Had he not been standing, he would got them all in the chest. They're leaving the bullets in, but he'll be fine and should be able to go home today!
He and his wife had just moved to Colorado Springs a few weeks ago, and then were evacuated to Denver because of the fires. They didn't have any friends or support out there, but another friend of mine's mom is from there and had her church go to help them out, which they appreciate.

My God terrible . . . sick . . . horrible . . . why? Those were the thoughts that went through my mind.
As for whether this was linked to the movie, I am willing to bet it was. I am certain this psycho choose this night and a theater showing the new Batman movie cause he know it would be packed people and give him more people to murder. The more people he murders, the more "famous" he becomes. I also suspect he was inspired by Bane. He was where a gas mask and Bane's mask kind of looks like a gas mask. Do I know that for certain? Of course not, but I do think it a reasonable suspicion. This of course does not mean that I would support any type of artistic suppression. I would be totally against that.
My heart, thoughts, and prayers go out to the victims of this horrible tragedy.
The usual talking heads will be on the airwaves blaming the entertainment industry soon enough. I don't know if anyone can ever find rhyme or reason in the mind of someone deranged enough to shoot a celebrity, a politician, or a group of innocent people.
I happen to live in one of the towns where a theater shooting occurred at a screening of The Warriors in 1979. That cast a long enough shadow the city asked the cable company to black out an HBO showing on Halloween two years later.

They're leaving the bullets in? Wow. I would think that would cause problems later on. Glad your friend will be okay.

It's an historical fact that gun crime began with the invention of the cinematograph.
The premier in Paris has been cancelled I notice.
So one nutjob in Denver and the world must stop going to the pictures and presumably stay at home and watch the 24hr news dissect every pixel and inkblot of this insane person's life.
It's horrible for the people at the location this event happened but if he shot people in an Mozart performance would the BBC cancel the proms?
Would people blame orchestral music?
I would think the Paris premiere is being cancelled out of respect. It would be construed as being in poor taste to have a splashy red carpet event right now.

What about a sober red carpet event, concentrating on the film with fundraising for the victim's families?

Metreon IMAX in San Francisco. Can't find a pic with the screen, but it's huge and wonderful.
I'll be at this one, 3:45 am Friday morning!
I went at 8am. When people starting walking out of the 3:45am show, I was tempted to continuously yell, "FAN FILTRAAAAAAAATTTIIIOOOOOONNN!!" Alas, I did not.

I imagine the studio and the filmmakers may organize some sort of event along those lines, or donate a portion of the profits.
