Daicon IV Opening Video

Author
Time
This is the opening done by Gainax(an anime studio responsible for Evangelion, Gunbuster, Kare Kano and others) for the 1983 Daicon Scifi Convention.

Basically, it's a music video starring the Bunny Girl Mina interacting with various Scifi/fantasy characters and settings, including, of course, Star Wars. The qualtie's only so-so, but it's not bad given how rare the LDs are.

Is it the one that Gainax produced with money from their own pocket, while they were still strugling to be an animation production team? If so, neat!

Also, apart from the anime mentioned, some of you might know Gainax work from anime such as Wings of Honneimase (cant spell), Nadia, Furi Kuri, or Mahoromatic.
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

That was amazing! You say there was an LD of this?

Where were you in '77?

That's what I heard on the forum I found it on. It can apparrently go for thousands when it shows up on Yahoo Japan auctions.

Only weird thing was they parody it in FLCL, where Haruko comes in in a bunny suit on a flying guitar, and she says Daicon V, when this is Daicon IV.

Here's a website I found on it,

Gainax referenced all kinds of great ish in FLCL!=9 M'favorite anime ever.

The Daicon video was also reincarnated for the opening theme of the TV series Densha Otoko in Japan. I don't know if Gainax did it themself, though.
Anyway, there weren't any direct Star Wars references in that one. Good series, though!

According to that site, the Densha Otaku clip was done by Gonzo, which apparently was founded by former Gainax members(and started out doing PSX FMVs - it shows). I have a love/hate relationship with that studio, They can make some good things, but they mostly over use CGI while not developing story much. That, and their fan's (self-labeled Gonzo Whores)are rather annoying. I haven't seen the that show though.

Now, I'll instantly MARRY whoever is otaku enough to name the aircraft "destroyed" (it was just on fire) just before the Yamato and that Enterprise starhip, on the DAICON III opening. It takes a certain level of otaku presence to be able to catch THAT reference.
