DVD Player Recommendations

I have to get a new DVD player for my dorm room, and I figured before I went out and bought one I'd see if you guys had any suggestions.

I am looking for one that is 1)Not too expensive(of course) and 2)will play anything I throw at it.

For example, I want one that will play .avi, .mpg, .mpeg, and any other standard video/audio format straight from a burnt cd.

I'm also in the market for a DVD player and my needs are the same as The Sessler's. It also needs to be multi-region or hackable, because I have a lot of Region 2 DVDs (PAL).

So Jay, those DVD players you linked to, will they play region 2 discs? I read all the jargon but I couldn't find anything that specifically addressed different regions. I'm sure I'm just being ignorant and/or blind but I thought I better ask anyway.

There was one on DVDactive.com awhile ago that they were talking about. It was an upconverting multi-region player. I forget how much it costed though.....

It doesn't mention region coding specifically, but I believe they should, yes. They output both NTSC and PAL and they're compatible with different voltage requirements for different countries. It would be odd for them not to be multi-region.

I took Jays advice, so should you OPPO all the dude,cant go wrong,very nice player,and when there are upgrades available,you just download the image,burn to CD,then pop into your player,wallah,upgraded.

Thanks Ricardo. So this player does everything I want it to do and is recommended by basically everyone, and only costs $150? Sounds great.

But seeing as I have just moved here and will be kitting out my whole house/apartment in due course, would you guys recommend getting a HD player instead, to avoiding having to upgrade in the future? I can't imagine my wife letting me buy a another machine and TV a few months down the line, so seeing as right now we have nothing (not even plates or cutlery), this might be my only chance to get what I really want/need (you know how wives are - they don't get it).

personally, i'd wait until the end of this year if you are seriously thinking of getting an HD-DVD or Blu-ray player. rumours are a combo player will be released for around $650-ish. just do what I do. open a seperate savings account without her knowing and stash the money there. see no evil, hear no evil. when the time comes, get a good player. plus the HD players that are out now only support 720p. not enough for the price they are asking, imho.

now if you are looking for just a player that plays all regions without spending mondo dough, get one of those cheapo radioshack dvd players. i won one from work and it works dreamily. the price is only 30-40 bucks.

just a suggestion.

30-40 bucks for a multi-region player sounds good to me. That way I won't feel so bad when I chuck it out and upgrade later down the line. I didn't realise they came so cheap.

again, it's not advertised as a multi-region player.. but there is a hack for it on dvdrhelp.com. works freakin great, especially for the money involved.

What's the model number of the one you have? Or do Radio Shack only make one player?

it's cheap and plays anything. even corrupted dvd-r's. as much as i like the oppo, with the advent of HD upon us, might as well save your money for that and get a cheapo replacement until the time is right.

as long as they are in vcd format... not that difficult to encode...
