Has this document been examined?

You might try the Film Tech forum as those folks are the ones who'd know the technical details. I dug up this old post from there which might provide some insight on the levels:

"Our recordings have always matched the master mix. The 3dB difference on **OLD** DTS unit refers to the playback level from the player. Remember when the spec was to set the DTS output for 85dB SPL on screen channels, 82dB SPL on the surrounds, and 88dB SPL on the sub?

Now, the spec is to set the sub for 10dB in-band gain as compared to the center channel. It is best to use a RTA for this adjustment. If you do not have a RTA, you will be in the ballpark by setting DTS sub output at 91dB SPL."

Also: from what I've read the LFE is mixed WITH the 20-80hz information present in the surrounds instead of being JUST LFE information... this is the reason why many folks thought DTS sounded more bass-rich in the cinema vs SR-D; low frequency informations present in surrounds + the mixed in LFE channel would be routed to the cinema's sub which could actually reproduce those signals accurately vs the surround speakers. SR-D's system had no bass management system so the bass in the surround channels weren't rendered as well due to surround speakers having smaller drivers.

I've got so many pdf's on this subject that my head spins looking at them.  I am a member of Film-Tech and it can be difficult to get some of the info I had been looking for.

Dear Jetrell,
I thought to sort the list of the first post in alphabetical order, to be more readable; plus, I replaced (Found)(Sorted) with (Sync'ed), because I think sync'ed (syncronized/syncronised) is more understandable than sorted, and removed found as it's obvious that if it's sync'ed, it's found! ;) hope this could be of some help!

A question: could Battlefield Earth (2000) DTS Cinema discs be found somewhere?

Ooops... (^^,) you forgot double Romeo & Juliet, plus the sorting made with "the" in front... well, I adjusted the list, thanks!

The only other one I can think of not on the list there is Die Another Day. Saw the premiere week in the then-new Carmike flagship theater which I believe was full DTS-ES. There was an extra rear sixth channel but I don't think they were doing the Dolby EX. Anyhow, it sounded stellar and very huge but later seeing it again in standard 35, it didn't have the same hugeness.

It was of great help Andrea, thank you.  I also added some that were missing but are in my possession.

As for Battlefield Earth, I don't have it but I could look around.  Maybe I'll get a hit on it.

About Battlefield Earth: it will be great! Even if 99% of the mankind think it's one - if not THE - of the worst movies ever made, I'll do it for the remaining 1%... (^^,)

It will be great to see the list on fanres, too!

hey guys, been searching through the threads and think this is an awesome project.  been trying to track down the DTS LD soundtrack of Mortal Kombat like a few others on here.  I have the disc, laserdisc player with optical out, SB X-fi with optical capture capability which apparently can do bit perfect audio recording.  I believe Dark_Jedi is close to releasing the track but I wanted to give it a shot just in case he gets too bogged down to complete it.  (even though I rather use his haha)   I could of swore someone wrote up a how to record DTS audio somewhere in the forums but I no longer can seem to find it.  If anyone could point me in the right direction, that would be great.  Thanks.

A warning about Battlefield Earth: The film was slightly recut for video/DVD, with a couple bits added in and a couple bits cut out (including a hilariously bad scene where John Travolta drops a human off a cliff to settle an argument with Forrest Whitaker about whether "man-animals" can fly; it has one of the worst digital green-screen composites I've seen). If IMDB is correct, there was also at least one bit of dialogue where the home video cut used a different take than the theatrical.

So to do a DTS sync, you would need the theatrical cut. I know it has appeared in full-frame on standard-definition pay cable - I caught an airing on one of the Starz channels a few years back, that's where I saw Terl throwing the guy off the cliff. But whether there's a widescreen/HD version of the theatrical cut out there, I couldn't tell you. I don't know which cut was used for the German Blu-ray. The film is also on Vudu, not sure which cut is there either. And there may be some older HDTV rip out there that could have the theatrical cut (much like how films like 1941, Star Trek: The Motion Picture and Star Trek VI were theatrical cuts on HDTV back when only extended cuts had been released on DVD). [The German BD and Vudu versions are opened up to 1.78:1, other HDTV versions might be too.]

I discovered that Battlefield Earth has basically (AFAIK) two cuts: theatrical and "home" - the fist is available as web download, the second on DVD and BD; so I tought to do an "extended" cut, as some scenes/shots are present in only one cut and not in the other or vice versa.

The Cinema DTS will be very precious to do it, as the TC web download is only in stereo... unless an HDTV with 5.1 audio track will be found - I searched a lot, and didn't find it... yet!

So you know for a fact that the German BD also has the home video cut?

And the web DL you refer to is the Vudu version that's 1.78:1, right? I know the German BD was opened up to 1.78, but I don't actually know if the Vudu version is opened or just cropped..

Yep!

Nope! It's 2.35:1

I know the German BD was opened up to 1.78, but I don't actually know if the Vudu version is opened or just cropped..

Actually the German BD is open matte, with more details on top and bottom, but less on the sides:

OK, I read your thread on FanRes, didn't realize you already knew about the 2 cuts, aspect ratios, etc. So you already have a version that could sync up with the cinema DTS; we can shift the topic back towards DTS.

As I asked on FanRes, is there any lead on Twister? That is one of those movies like Jurassic Park and ID4 that was a benchmark for digital sound...

Another one: Speed. Wasn't sure if that had DTS in theaters, it's not on the posters, but I found a Los Angeles Times article from 1994 that mentions that it would be going out in both Dolby Digital and DTS.

I have sent feelers out on these to some contacts.  I am awaiting a reply.

Battlefield Earth -  happy to know it's available! It will be used for the project, in a distant future, maybe around the year 3000...

I remember seeing Twister when it came out in DTS and thought the audio was really well done.  I might have to dig out my DVD of this and give it a watch, haven't seen it in many years.

I would love to hear how ID4 sounds compared to the blu-ray. I was a little disappointed with the audio on blu-ray.
