Cut Footage after burning

Hello,
I will make this clear: I. AM. NOT. SMART. I use Roxio for my burning and other crap, and ALWAYS lose footage - so fansub dvds = no chance. So, instead THIS time, I tried a different procedure: Windows Movie Maker. I changed the aspect ratio to standard 4:3 NTSC, and burned; it did not work, so I ripped the VTS files that were ON the disc (that part worked) using DVDShrink to my computer. Then, I burned it again on the same RW disc; it worked fine, but instead of the subs being chopped off, I lose footage on the sides. The WMV WMM made has the footage, can someone help me? Any FREE program that will fix this?
Thanks,
~bkev

Do you mean 4:3 fullscreen or 16:9 Widescreen? Also, Windows Movie Maker is a very bad program to edit stuff with.

When you say you lose footage, you mean like edges of the video, right? Not like actual seconds or minutes of the video being chopped right? If that is the case, I might hazard a guess that overscan is your problem. The short story: TVs will crop off a little bit of the side of video in case the edges are not smooth. Computers don't do that, hence you can see all the edges on the WMV file. If I understand you correctly, that could possibly be the problem. The bad news is I don't know of a program to fix this. However, I think I read somewhere that you can mess with your TV and get rid of overscan, but at the risk of maybe ruining something. So sorry, I couldn't really help.

May the Force be with you.

4:3 fullscreen.
Jeez, I don't know my measurements. I don't think it's overscan, as I think that only applies to widescreen. That, and my OTHER tv has terrible overscan by comparison.
I know that before I went through WMM, that I did NOT have standard NTSC resolution on the videos. That is all I know.

Could you possible provide some screencaps - before/after, computer monitor/tv, etc? If you have a digital camera, you can do it that way as well.

JediRandy: They’re certainly beyond any repair you’re capable of making.

Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.

JediRandy: I won’t suck as much as a fan edit.

Screens will be added later. Keep in mind that I do not lose much (it is very much watchable), however I am VERY picky.

I think every TV tube has overscan 4:3 and 16:9, and probably every tube is slightly different. Perhaps plasma and lcd sets don't suffer the same problems.
In any case I'd suggest scaling down the image in the centre of your video file until you can see the whole image on your TV.
