OK but in the future what settings should I choose in cce when my source is 23.976 fps avi.

framerate 23.976 or 29.97? 29.97 I presume...

pulldown 2:3 or 3:2?

should I also select inv. 3:2 pulldown (when the source is non pulldown / 23.976 fps)?

I encode to 23.976fps and then simply "pulldown film.m2v NTSC.m2v" which gives me a 29.97fps mpeg2 file with 3:2 pulldown flags in it. Having the pulldown.exe add the pulldown flags into the file means on a truly progressive setup (PC playback) you get smooth 23.976fps playback whilst on an NTSC tv you get the 3:2 pulldown 29.97fps playback.

So in the command prompt you type: pulldown "*.mpv" right? It says it uses 2:3 pulldown
(where * means the file you want to pulldown)

Just to be sure, when I apply pulldown to a 23.976 movie the number of frames stays excactly the same? Only a tiny bit of information (flags) is/are added so the dvdplayer knows what frames to play double?

Wow...this thread reminds me of when I was learning all this stuff. Good times, good times....

I sorta like how it really has nothing to do with "the best way to crop and resize" anymore...

It has a lot to do with crop and resize. When you don't remove the pulldown first the image quality is bad when you crop and resize.

And everything since, going into the details of pulldown, etc., has nothing to do with cropping and resizing. IVTC is a necessary first step, true, but a full-on, dragged-out, step-by-step description of how to add pulldown with Pulldown.exe is not "best way to crop and resize."

Unless you'd agree that a full-on, dragged-out, step-by-step description of how to install drywall (including the finer points of drywall screws) belongs under the heading "best way to paint your living room."

I don't really mind—like MBJ, I'm enjoying the nostalgia of it all. But it still ain't "best way to crop and resize."

You're 100% right! But when I made the title I didn't know the other questions that would rise. Maybe I'll make a new thread "Pulldown".

But the actual comments of whether or not someting belong in the thread "Best way to crop and resize" has also nothing to do with the actual crop and resize

Touche! (You'll have to imagine the e-acute)

The original poster (that's you, Arnie.d, right?) can almost certainly go back and edit the subject of the original post -- say, to something like "Best way to prepare to crop and resize?" -- if he wanted to...

A whole pile of this sort of info (i.e. pre-resizing, IVTC, pulldown, super-sampling, etc.) is covered in huge amounts of detail with giants in the field (i.e. the people actually writing the filters to do the stuff) on Doom9.org's forum. That's where I got most of my early info, and I've never seen anything better. Not to say people here don't know what they're doing -- they do, for the most part -- but asking here is sorta like asking about the ins and outs of the recording industry on a Grateful Dead bootleg trading forum.

"Maybe I'll make a new thread "Pulldown"

I'd rather one thread go a little off-topic due to related questions, rather than several individual threads for each individual question. This thread is serving its purpose, regardless of the title.
