Cringe Factor

I thought it would be interesting to see what is the ultimate, the most gut wrenchingly, embarrassing moment of the PT. Unlike the OT, I don't watch the movie and at any point want to press the "fast forward" button. So, here's your chance to vent your spleen about a particular scene, a line of dialogue, a thematic or plot idea.

Mine would definitely be in AOTC and the fireplace scene with Padme and Anakin. Anakin's entire dialogue is pitiful, absolutely shocking. But the one that seals it is something like "my heart is hoping, hoping that kiss does not turn into a scar...." Absolute tripe, nothing like the romance of Empire or ANH.

Who's next?

ahhhhhhhh the moment i've been waiting for... lol

well 1st scene is prolly gonna be said by everybody but to be completely honest... the very first scene which killed the PT for me was the introduction of Jar Jar..
i thought everything kicked ass up until then....
oh man i was so embarrassed to call myself a STar Wars fan after that shiat!
but i dont consider them the same movies anymore anyway...

but another scene that just made my stomach turn... many will disagree....
the pod race... although it did have its times... the whole two headed announcer was fuckin childish as it can get... rewatch that scene and you'll know what i mean...

ill let someone else vent here... or else ill end up mentioning everyones least fave part...

True its a bit cheesy. But then again Han and Leia had there cheesy moments. All love has it. Its how love is. Also Padmes outfit in the fireplace sequence is my personal favorite. Its tight. I like tight. George stated he invented that outfit himself. You wonder why I think hes a geneous.

Oh for sure, Portman looks damn hot! But I still can't sit through that scene. And the Han and Leia love scenes were soooo much better! More class, less mushy and even funny, "My hands are dirty too, what are you afraid of?" Leagues ahead of ATOC! "I've been dieing a little bit each day since you came back into my life." Pffft, yeah, sure you have, we have been too Padme.

Actually Luke, I agree with you on the pod race. It was just so much dead weight in the middle of the film. It had its moments though. The midiclorean bit was dumb as was the virgin birth idea. He just had to throw that in. It doesn't bother me much, but in hindsight, it was lame. Killing Maul and Qui-gon off was bad as well. Qui-Gon's death could work as a catalyst to mature Obi-Wan, but it would have been cool had Maul lived so a more skilled Obi could have a climatic showdown during the Jedi purge or something. Maybe Qui-Gon's death could have been used as part of the reason Anakin turns somehow. I like how Anakin's emotionally unstable, but Lucas does overplay it a bit. Where's the "good friend" Obi-Wan mentions in IV? All I hear is"He doesn't understand" and, "He's holding me back". Jar Jar doesn't bother me much, outside of the eopie fart joke. placing the Emperor's powers almost solely on his shoulders pretty much solidifies his place in the fans loathing.

Han & Leia's romance was so much more convincing than anything in the prequals, without slowing down the pace of the film and appearing so contrived, we didn't need to see them on vacation having picnics in the countryside and cosy chats by the fireplace with the worst dialogue ever , if George wanted us seriously to believe in them as couple he should have introduced them both at a similar age and thrown them into some thrilling situations that would draw them together.

when Anakin rides that monster of some kind to impress Padme not only looks to bad digitally but has almost no reason for being in there...

i hated Boss Nass completely...
again targeted towards kids.... from what i saw...

hrm... and i just think they overplayed the whole "force" mentioning between Qui Gon and Obi Wan...
there's a disturbance in the force
i felt it too
don't worry the force will guide us

and Qui Gon using his mind trick in TPM ruins the effect it has on ANH when Obi Wan does it...

PHEW... thats all for now..

Yeah, I'd have to agree that the fireplace scene takes the cringe factor cake. Have you ever been embarassed for somebody else? That's kind of how I feel when I watch that scene.

Another scene, at least for me, is that damn Looney Tunes-esque C-3PO cartoon sequence in the droid factory. That scene literally looks animated. Easily the worst CG in the prequels.
Greedo shoots first? Not in my DVD player.

It's funny Luke, so many of your posts we're in sync with I totally agree with all the things you listed...

1. The intro of Jar-Jar...that moment took me from the highest high to the lowest low
2. Darth Maul dying...to add insult to injury...why does Jar-jar live and the most bad-ass character ever die, didn't GL learn with having to bring back Fett in the PT?
3. That scene Luke mentioned where Anakin is riding that bull thing to impress Padme from ATOC, awful
4. The Scooby-doo fish scene in TPM, nuff said.
5. The Roger-roger droids
6. Dex from ATOC that analyzes the dart, why add stupid cartoony looking characters?
7. Watto, again why? Why?
8. Definitely the two headed Pod-race announcer straight from Laff-O-Lympics (maybe before your time)
9. Going from one jar-jar to Gungans...again it felt like my heart had already been pulled out and someone jumping on it.
10. The whoopie scenes with Anakin in TPM and the "its not fair" whiny scenes in ATOC
11. The kids figuring out where the missing planet is for Obi-wan scene in ATOC...OMG, are you serious?
12. There is a scene when Obi-wan and Qui-Gon drop down to a lower level over a hundred feet in TPM and its looks soooo cartoony (e.g. the war against the droids in TPM).
13. "why do I feel like your going to be the death of me" from Obi-wan to anakin is bad, really lame
14. Can I just say any Jar-jar scene makes me want to strangle someone. GL maybe.
15. TPM in general was far too cartoony...many scenes used CGI abusively. That said the realism and acceptability for CGI is VASTLY improved in ATOC.
16. Boss Nass

Now that all may seem negative, but I love Darth maul, the double saber, the sound in the pod-race, the fight between obiwan and jango, the dog fight with obi and jango through asteroids, the gladiatoresque scene in ATOC, Obi wan flying through the crowded city, Palpatine in general, the clones and that whole story, saber fights, Anakin wanting revenge for his mother and kicking ass, the ship obi-wan has that dock in the circular thing to hit lightspeed, etc. So hopefully that eases the negativity a bit. Though trust me, TPM still rips a whole in my heart when I think about it.

You know, I can take the fireside chat (as awful as it is), the fart joke in TPM, Jar Jar doing almost anything, even the midichlorians and virgin birth stuff over listening to Padame say, 'I'm not afraid to die. I've died a little bit each day since you came back into my life.' Just plain PHEW! There are no words to describe how horrible, horrible that line is. It was almost like Padame farted and the whole audience heard it. To this very day I want to ask Natalie Portman how on earth was she able to say that without laughing? Where are the bloopers for that line? You know they exist.

I've said it before. There I was in the theatre for the 2nd time that day and seeing AOTC for the second time. The Padame fart line happened and I lust looked at my best friend and said, 'Oh PHEW!' No one talks like that! I don't think that I've ever been more embarrassed for an actor than I am for Natalie Portman. To have said that and it's on film for all eternity.

Wait, I take that back. I was totally embarrassed for Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford and Mark Hamil in the Holiday Special. Poor Carrie. Having to sing that horrible song. Still makes my ears bleed when I hear it.

I waas never much bothered by the PT ... I kind of like the movies. I mean there is some good stuff in there(Can I get a Hoorray for Darth Maul) but ... just like the Ewoks in the OT ... The gungans should have lost this war and be annihilated to the last long tongued water breathing freak.

Or make them less funny and dumb ... they survived for a long time underwater ... so why not make them sneaky :barf:

Anyway. Jar Jar and the Luuuuv scenes sucked bigtime.

PS: Made me feel just like the scene from the Matrix where Neo "makes sweet sweet love" to Trinity :r

PPS: Mind you ... sex is good ... but not for these movies

I think the worst part of the PT(so far) happened in Attack of the Clowns when Anakin compared the sand on Naboo to Padme. Was there ever a worse written line or a line so poorly given as that one. I'd quote but, do you really need to reread it? I would have prefered another fart joke then to have to hear that line.

Snooy, I read your post and for a second I thought it said Jar Jar's loves scenes, OMG, now that would be really crappy. OOOOHHH MEEEESAAAA HORNNNNYYYY MEEEESSSAAAA BINKS YOU LONG TIMEY .

I didn't even mention this, the title Phantom Menace, WTF, stupid. What menace? Luc-ass for messing with something really good and turning it into a bad satuday morning cartoon, hell, droids was better.

LOL! Jar Jar love scenes. Eeewww!

Yeah, the title The Phanotm Menace is lame. I mean, I get who and what the menace is, but it still comes off sort of lame. The menace was obviously Darth Sidious and the Sith/Darkside. To me the real menace was Jar Jar.

TPM was bad but i still think AOTC was worse...
i mean there wasnt a lot of thought that went into AOTC...

i guarentee other possible titles for AOTC were...
the clones attack
the attacking clones
clones on the attack

man couldnt "the clone wars" have done???

I'll say what I've always said about the title... sounds like an episode of Scooby Doo.
