Creators that ruined their own works

Author

We all know about George Lucas and the Prequels. But how about other creators who have ruined their work through later installments of beloved franchises (e.g. the Wachowskis with the matrix sequels) and cast a shadow over their greater, better work.

How about the last episode of seinfeld. The four end up in jail for all their actions in the previous episodes; and apparently we were wrong for laughing at them, as that episode implies.

What a great way to end an iconic show, am I right?? They should have shown the middle finger for 60 minutes, that would have offended us less.

Are you ever happy about anything?

Maybe. But I made this thread as discussion, not some joke. If I wasn't treated with contempt all the time here I would stop being pessimistic. Its not my fault that people create something great, then slowly grow corrupt and ruin their own work and disembowel anything good that remained in the franchise. But that's life. We build up idols and they betray us in the end. If I can't talk about that, if I have to be some coked up happy freak that represses any negative thoughts that crop up, then I guess the world is a much sadder place than I thought. Lucas is just one person who has ruined his work. I could name dozens of others if I cared to.

I still deserve to be treated with respect, regardless of how stupid my posts are. As a SW fan, I came here to vent out at the bitterness I feel with George Lucas's endless decisions to destroy everything great about SW.

But I guess if my opinions don't matter to anyone else here, go to Jay and have me permanently banned from the forums. I guess I don't have the right to talk about SW anymore.

Well, you certainly don't have the right to talk about SW in this thread, given how locked it is.

I still think that free will business was a big mistake (Free Willy was as well).

Why give people the thing and then tie them down with rules so they can't use it (this is also true of willies)?

And making apes sentient was just cruel.

Their self awareness will make their mortal existence ultimately frustrating.

Which is funny but not very nice.

All right then, I'll avoid SW in this thread. I started this topic about other people who ruined their work.

But this thread is locked. You can't post in here at all, so stop pretending that you are.

If the thread is locked, why do we see other users on this thread? (wink)

Anyways, I started this thread to really talk about Dave Sim. Towards the end of his run on Cerebus, he devoted eleven issues to an exegesis on the book of Genesis that justified his own sexist views and to his own version of the Big Bang. It was printed in very small text and nearly impossible to read. I spent days looking this up on google, and almost everyone seems to hate this storyline. It was so bad, that it probably ruined the other 289 issues of Cerebus as well.

Then there's Tim Burton. Anyone seeing Dark Shadows in the next couple weeks? (sarcasm intended)

That's just your personal overactive conspiracy-theory-loving imagination. No one can post in this thread now that I locked it.

I thought the ending to Seinfeld was brilliant and pretty perfect.  I wouldn't have had it any other way.

But in response to your OP:

- Stephen King with the last three Dark Tower novels

- Chris Carter with the last 2-4 seasons of The X Files

And I'm sure more will come to me.

I'd like to say Matt Groening in regards to The Simpsons, but the truth is the show was ruined by shitty writers and greedy corporate assholes. Groening is an oblivious jackass who refuses to see the show for the pile of shit its become, though, so - in a spiritual sense - he's still part of the problem.

Sim's decent into misogynistic madness is well known in comic book circles. Cerebus was a pretty fun book before it turned into complicated politcial storyline. Almost mirrors what Star Wars became with the prequels. One still has to hand it to Dave Sim for completing the twenty years he set out to do.

Does Matt Groening really have that much to do with the Simpsons anymore?(Aside from cashing the royalty checks.)  I had the impression he handed off the reins and turned his attentions to Futurama long ago.

Well, I tried.

The Simpsons is essentially a zombie show now; It will be making new episodes long after Groening and the six main voice actors are dead.

Metroid: Other M. Didn't Yoshio Sakamoto realize how out of character Samus was in that game? She became the Bella Swan of space operas overnight. (I wonder if Dave Sim was involved in this one...)

This one may be controversial: Ronald Moore and the BSG finale. The whole series was actually our past, and they just destroy all their futuristic technology and live like cavemen, and that Hera was the mitochondrial eve of humanity. Well, what do you expect from a guy that practically made nearly everyone a cylon in the end?

The BSG finale was unintentionally hilarious to me. Either a disease they brought with them wipes all the native humans out, or vice versa. Throwing out all their technology must lost it's appeal after the first dozen or so people got eaten by lions.

Mind you, the original series could have been interpreted as being our past as well. The whole "ancient astronauts" theory was all the rage in the 70's.

Too bad the SciFi channel doesn't seem to want anyone to see the Cylon War prequel, as the trailer looked promising.
