Kevin Smith interview in Rolling Stone on fans - Couldn't have said it better myself...

Author

 (Edited)

“This new Vader cycle (the prequels) has split the one-time Old Republic that was Star Wars fandom into two warring factions: the Rebellion, and the normal people with a sense of perspective who don’t need a term from the Star Wars lexicon to define them. The Rebellion is populated by the joyless, cynical ubertrolls who, sadly, take up the most space on the Internet. These are the hollow men and women who marched into the prequels demanding that Lucas recapture their lost Star Wars youth for them – that simple time in their lives when they had the excuse of prepubescence to explain why they were still virgins. With that much investment in make-believe, its little wonder they emerged as more twisted by the dark side than young Skywalker himself. The rest of us who grew in the sixteen years between Jedi and Phantom Menace view the new trilogy for what it is: three movies, not three impossible-to-fulfill expectations of folks who need a bearded billionaire in flannel to dream for them.”

Wow. Knowing much of Kevin Smith's own history and excessive level of geekdomness....

I just don't know what to say to that right off. A meaner me would probably think 'what a f**king prick he had become- is this what happens when he finds out the general public doesn't give a rat's ass about him making movies and he realizes his only chance of success is running comic book stores and repeatedly re-making Jay and Silent Bob films with multiple SW references..?'

But at least I'm not the mean me.

Oh goodie! A dramatic exit by someone who you know hasn't left at all and is still reading as we speak!

Anyways, it's a shame that so many on the pro-prequels side can't seem to respect differing tastes and views. . . but instead dismiss those with whom they disagree as either crazy, stupid, or socially mal-adjusted. It might surprise Kevin Smith and others like him to know that there are tons of well-adjusted, otherwise normal people who just feel that George Lucas lost his touch. And, we don't need to look through a nostalgic lens to see it. Funny how I loved Jedi as a kid, but loathe it now. . . shouldn't my nostalgia have trapped me into considering it the best film ever? George Lucas obviously changed his cinematic sensibility right around the time he was involved with Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Return of the Jedi. His movies descended from that point into infantalism. Perhaps it's not a coincidence that it was at this time that he adopted his first child.

Kevin Smith believes that The Phantom Menace is better than Empire. Yet, rather than give some substantial reasoning for this view, he seems to feel the need to attack the people who disagree with him rather than the (very legitimate) criticizm of Lucas's recent movies.

Oh, and way to troll there, Mr. Coffee. I urge everyone here not to encourage posts like this. Please do not respond with vitriol or attacks. It's just what he wants.

I certainly hope this made you feel better, though I doubt it's going to have anywhere near the effect you wanted.

"expectations of folks who need a bearded billionaire in flannel to dream for them.”

Or quotes from a bearded off-beat director in a trenchcoat to speak for them...

Kevin Smith is a dork who made one hip flick in college and has been riding on it ever since.

I used to be a big fan. His films haven't stood the test of time for me though. I get bored while watching them and don't bother finishing. I watched Clerks two years ago with an ex-girlfriend. Nowhere near as funny as I remembered it being when I was in college. I left the DVD at her place after we broke up and didn't think to get it back.

The best films grow with you and keep their charm. Smith's films are mostly immature bullshit.

Maybe he's sympathetic toward Lucas because, like Lucas, he's now getting trashed left and right for being a has-been. The best thing he's done recently is play the balding medical examiner in Daredevil.

And yet he speaks for Mr. Coffee. Maybe he should pick his heroes a little more carefully.

You know what?!?!?!? FUCK KEVIN SMITH!!!!!!!!!

That felt somewhat better....

Now....more seriously....I can understand the whole arguement about us "older" OT fans being impossible to please......and frankly, I never expected the prequels to surpass or even equal the OT on any level. I went in back in 99 with a VERY open mind and I never passed judgement untill long after AOTC came out.

Now I can accept that we didn't get films that compared to the OT, but what we did get was a FUCKING MESS WITH NO GODDAMN WELL THOUGHT OUT STORY WHATSOEVER.

I would expect Kevin Smith to know the difference from a well plotted out storyline and one that was made up as time went along. Considering his films are not what most would consider cinematic masterpieces, we should consider the source here.

DAMN, I'M PISSED NOW!!!!!!!!! SMITH JUST WENT TO #2 ON MY SHIT LIST.......JEDIKEV.....YOU JUST FELL TO #3!!!!!!!!!

Anyone remember the short lived "Clerks" cartoon. He had a whole mock court scene where he put George Lucas on trial for how bad Star Wars Episode I was. While the lawyer, the guy who worked in the video store in "Clerks," grilled Lucas about parts of the movie the judge broke in with a, "Well, the pod race scene was kind of cool."

Bleh, I guess you'd have to see it.

I think his Star Wars stereotypes are just idiotic. Just because we have an opinion on the prequels we're now labeled as clueless virgins, playing D&D in our basements discussing how bad the prequels are and how bad Lucas fucked them up. I've excepted them for what they are, I'm over it, but I still think they're just average films with great special effects. Quite honestly, I don't give a shit about the prequels anymore.

Having the OT on DVD is what I really want.

It was GREAT! And as far as I know, Kevin Smith did NOT write the series- just produce.

Come on guys, don't diss Kevin Smith too much, he is magnoliafan after all (my bloody emoticon's don't work so imagine a wink)
As for Jedikev, diss away. He's not on my hatelist cos he's just a cocky kid, but he's on my 'make fun of' list. And I don't claim to have exclusive rights to the Yoda avatar, but I don't really want to be confused with kev....

Yes, let's just generalize things and say that if you don't like the prequels, it's obviously your fault. Yes, let's assume that everyone who hates them hates them for the same reason. That's a gross oversimplifacation. I think I'll have to agree with my fellow Macrossworlder Hurin. People like/hate them for different reasons. Saying that those who hated them had their standards too high or so is rather nuts. Besides, isn't it the film you're putting down when you say fans are disappointed when they didn't get great movies?

Personally, I like the prequels. I don't love them, nor do I watch them as much as the originals(which I don't watch as much as I used to), but I like them enough to own and enjoy them. They're not without their faults, but I didn't go in expecting Casablanca. basically, as long as they meshed with the EU(which they do mostly) I'm happy.

Besides, was it really too much to ask that they be fun to watch? Smith seems to imply that we should be happy we got anything at all. You mean to say we have to be children in order to fully enjoy these films?

Well, Kevin Smith is 50% right and 50% wrong. Yes, these are just movies, and we shouldn't be taking so much time and energy bashing them. BUT... that dosen't mean that we must love every little piece of crap GL delivers us. What is he saying, that everyone who slightly disliked the prequels is a loser? Well perhaps he should stick on making more Ben Affleck-related movies that are, basically, Clerks re-written in a shopping mall or in a movie studio or wherever, while he dreams of, one day, being like Richard Linklater.
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

I like Chasing Amy. The SW references are golden (as is the Jaws reference. )

And my question remains the same, Kev, though it appears to have become rhetorical at this point.
