Converting movie for use with Sony Vegas (Quicktime)

Wrong section, my apologies.

Confusing Codecs and Formats

I’ve been trying my first fan edit of sort, merging elements of Harmy’s Despecialized Star Wars with his Respecialized 97 as an introduction to basic editing. I chose to use Sony Vegas, as I have some familiarity with it. However, I realized it’s very picky with source videos, and if I’m not mistaken, it relies on Quicktime or shares compatibility with it. That’s where it got interesting; after remuxing the MKVs into MP4s, it still wouldn’t accept the videos. Tried changing the extension, but Quicktime kept telling me “Error -2041”. Tried many different settings in FFMPEG and Handbrake before finally finding one that worked - both audio and video, and I wanted to share my experience and see what others say about it.

Quicktime was unable to play videos that were above the “Main” Profile and Level “3.2”. Furthermore, it did not play DTS audio - in fact, I believe choosing DTS-HD in Handbrake was one of the “Error -2041” causes. Finally, I chose AAC audio, 5.1 Mixdown - I think Dolby Pro Logic II caused problems as well - and Quicktime finally played both audio and video correctly. Meanwhile, VLC has played everything all along, but Sony Vegas just had to be based on Quicktime. In any case, I’m curious to hear what you guys think of my findings, and if there are any you’d care to share yourself.

Cheers.

Yeah I would’ve deleted it if I could find how. I’m guessing that’s not something I have access too, hence my correction asking for a move.
