Confused about O-OT Lightsaber Colors

Author
Time

I've always been confused about the colors of Luke and Obi Ban's lightsabers in the Original Trilogy.

Are the almost cyan colors of the lightsabers in GOUT Star Wars accurate?  If so, why is the blue color darker in The Empire Strikes Back and the Revenge of the Jedi trailers?

I believe the facts are as follows:

1. the GOUT colors are really unsaturated, so what you're seeing on an untouched GOUT is a lot paler than what it was in theatres

2. the sabres in ESB and ROTJ-trailer were indeed darker than in the original Star Wars.

Luke's cyan lightsaber in SW has always been that way, as far as I know, and I suppose it can be chalked up to a colouring error. Obi-Wan's lightsaber, IMO, looks to be the same shade of blue as Luke's lightsaber in TESB.

All of the SW sabers can fluctuate a bit depending on which transfer you look at.

Simple, but because of the GOUT they look very faint when not watching on an old CRT. Most every transfer I've ever seen has them look slightly different in some way.

It's nice to see definitive proof that Luke's saber was blue. Since the scene looks a little too cold on that print, it may have been a little more cyan, but it was definitely not the shade seen in those JSC screenshots. Not aqua, not seafoam, and definitely not green or white.

How does it show up in your Technicolor scans, Harmy? Does your latest DeEd workprint reflect those?

It definitely isn't white, it's always blue and all the blue sabres in SW seem a little less cyan than on the GOUT but more so than ESB and the Revenge trailer.

That's of course too on the bluray :-)

Thanks for posting, none. Excellent article, I found this interesting;

Beyond droids and speeders, Stears would further lend his skills to the films many impressive laser battle pyrotechnics and was most noteworthily responsible for the epic blast that launched the Imperial Stormtroopers into the Rebel Blockade Runner at its start-an explosion so big and loud, though mis-timed apparently, spectators recalled it shook and almost demolished the lime green corridor set around them (as well as almost ending Stears life and career indefinitely!), and would be well remembered by the actors and stuntmen playing friend and foe. Just watch the final film and see for yourself how big that on-screen blast actually is: the debris that shoots past the camera and the shock on the Rebel soldiers faces as it goes off. No fear acting required - this was the real thing!

The lime green is something you definitely see traces of in the Technidisc LD as well, haven't really given it a thought before but it's seen in various behind the scenes pics of the corridor set, but this lime green quote is interesting as I was actually under the impression it was a pale blue, the wall panels and doorframes are clearly white but the rest is in a different shade as you can see. How all this appeared when photographed and ultimately timed is something different though.

interesting article.

also noted that those shots weren't

used, and from another angle.

the outfits look like a different color (lighting?)

here's ours:

the closest shot to the last,

none of the rebels fall over though,

and you can't really see the debris

on the ground:

Yes, those are outtakes. Not sure where they first appeared but I think it was in the documentary Empire of Dreams.

Yeah, Luke's lightsaber was always a pure cool shade of blue, any cyan appearance must be home video transfer errors.

The Star Wars trilogy. There can be only one.

Missed this thought of yours, if you refer to the blue color of their shirts, that's how they are supposed to look, they shouldn't be gray but they do appear that way sometimes in many early transfers.
