Silly me. I was looking at the TIE Fighters for some reason.
Silly me. I was looking at the TIE Fighters for some reason.
If you're still updating this here's a few more '97 re-composites:
Original
This one I had my doubts on, but if you check the stalk of the city, the lack of garbage matte around the Falcon and engine glow, you can see it's been redone, very accurate to the original.

Original
This one just before he drops.
SE
This one I cannot actually tell if it's been redone or not (the engine glow on the Falcon definitely look like a recomp though)
Original (GOUT)
Original (JSC)

Nevermind.
Eventually I'll add all of the new shots, been too busy recently.

No problem :) was just me thinking that you didn't have the patience listing these minor differences any longer. Maybe it would have been easier for you to list which effect sequences that are still left untouched. ;) But I don't think there is many left to list now.

Was mentioned in another forum when someone looked at the recent blu-ray preview pics. Endor gained an atmospheric glow in the SEs. (in the picasa page there are various pics where this tag can just be added if this is new.)

Here is some "scanline-mania" for you guys...
'86 JSC LD - just horizontal scanlines, the same in the '92 US Pan & Scan LD
Hi everyone, sorry for bringing up an old issue, unfortunately it seems I have more scanline mania...
On the Smear Free '93 thread, msycamore pointed out that my Special Widescreen Edition had a slightly different scanline pattern for some shots... So here are comparisons:
SWE- The scan lines are much more like the GOUT's, having more vertical scanlines. However, isn't the SWE supposed to have the same master as the JSC.
GOUT - a different screen pattern
Anyway, the rest of the shots with scan lines, as far as the Emperor scene, Vader hologram, and officers hologram, look like the JSC, but still it's a bit odd that this one shot would be different...
In any case, I uploaded this scene to Megaupload here:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=AA7BLEMB
It also includes the Emperor scene (with the officers talking to Vader beforehand), for further scanline observing, as well as the Cave Scene to get an idea of the general laserdisc transfer quality.
None of this is IVTC'ed but I don't think that that would cause this different scanline pattern in this one scene.
Would this mean the SWE is a different master than the JSC afterall, or does it just have more detail?
By the way, my pressing appears to be the Mitsubishi pressing of the SWE.
Thoughts?
Talking about scan lines, check this out:
It's taken from DJ's GOUT upscale. I sharpened it and tweaked the contrast a bit to make it more apparent, but the vertical scan lines are apparently there in the original, only they get lost because of low resolution.
Hmm.. interesting. So all the vertical scan lines have always been there from the beginning? I wonder why my SWE has it more visible than the better resolution (?) JSC.

That Blu-ray capture looks horrible; like a photoshop (and I've seen a few in my time...)
Oh, for anyone interested in the different scan line pattern, with more vertical lining, on my Mitsubishi SWE, I transferred the scenes with scan lines to a DVD via a Toshiba DVD recorder connected to a Pioneer LD-V850.
The DVD has two titles. The first title is from my SWE and has all the scan line scenes, plus a few clips just so you can get an idea of the overall SWE laserdisc quality. Apparently, my Mitsubishi pressing looks inferior to the Pioneer SWE pressing msycamore owns; however, it does show a different (more detailed) pattern here, so go figure!
The second title is from the 1997SE. It shows the scan line patterns from this edition, as well. As the 1997 LD is a laserdisc benchmark, I included these clips mostly to show how well my set-up transfers LDs to DVDs.
You can download this DVD here if you're interested:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=YJCSDH93
It's an ISO so you can extract the folders with WinRAR. By the way, this new DVD is higher quality than the Xvid I posted in my earlier post, so there are (slightly) less artifacts.
Thoughts, as well as tips to improve transfer quality, are always appreciated.

AFAIK all of the holograms scenes were filmed of a TV-screen to get the scan-lines effect, so it makes sense that you can see the rgb-pattern as well, if the resolution and contrast is good enough.
With rgb-pattern i mean this:
Still, I find it odd how it seems to randomly the scan pattern pops up in some releases. For example, my Mitsubishi SWE looks pretty dirty but somehow it's got it visible while the clearer JSC does not...

Yes, the vertical pattern was always there in the original, I've seen it in other transfers as well, it's weird that they got rid of just the horizontal lines for the recomposites, everything including the rolling bars are still left intact. Maybe they were a separate element.

I'm sorry that I didn't point them out earlier, I actually knew about these and thought these reframings had been covered already and was surprised when I went through the comparisons today and saw that they wasn't.
The difference in composition of the reframed shots would of course be even bigger if the GOUT transfer had utilized the same amount of picture information the 2004 DVD transfer does.

A few more reframed shots that isn't on your list.

I forgot to mention it earlier 005, but all those reframed shots I listed including these ones already on your list:
are 2004 DVD changes, not 1997 changes.

REALLY?! So it wasn't part of the "let's tear the movie apart and put it back together over a couple years" project, it was part of the "who knows who was in charge of these changes, but we'll surprise people when they buy the DVD" project?msycamore said:

Yeah, I agree that very little have been documented about the process behind these edits, would be interesting to know and see a little more behind the decisions etc., but I guess the less that is documented about it the better chance for the Lucasfilm-revisionism to succeed. ;)

Man, those "creative decisions" on the colars is really something to behold.

Out of curiosity, which version of the 97SE are you using for reference that's beautiful? Laserdisc, Reivax, Flunk, or G'Kar?
