005: Yes, I think those fx were farmed out even when Star Wars was made, IIRC they go into it in Rinzler's making of.

005, it seems that the Imperial officers' hologram shot posted on the previous page is missing from your list. I think the overlay pic that I posted clearly proves, that  it is a recomposite.

I've got the picture on there. I don't have that it might be a recomp.

Below is how that shot appear in the '97 SE, seems like the hologram was recomped for the 2004 DVD.

These below are incorrectly marked on your list as '97 alterations, they were all done for the 2004 DVD:

Now I will start to sound like a broken record, but these below have all been pointed out before, but they're still marked incorrectly.

2004 not '97:

2004 not '97:

These two wipes were redone in '04:

I'm not sure if they have been redone twice or not, haven't compared the '97 to the original wipes yet.

And the '97-Sunset is still missing in your comparisons:

Thanks, keep reminding me until I change it! I have the two wipes that may have been re-redone, so I'll compare them eventually.

Yeah, it may seem trivial but many have started to use your comparisons as a definite guide for various edits on this board, so there may be confusions otherwise.

Nice job RU.08, all are changes done for the '97 SE.

Could someone please give me the timing (not the frame number) of this shot within the GOUT or the SE, I can't seem to find it. Thank you.

Another thing: I wouldn't quite trust the garbage matte removal presented in the official comparisons. I think that some of the matte boxes are gone simply due to the increased contrast and crushed blacks of the 04 version, not due to any conscious garbage matte removal but whoever did the official changes (and I doubt it was anyone who actually worked on the SE and it was quite possibly someone who doesn't even know how these things actually work) just saw the matte boxes in the GOUT and not in the 04SE, so he/she decided that it must be a deliberate fix.

Here is one of the "garbage matte removal" shots from your comparisons and the third picture is the GOUT picture, simply adjusted to approximately the same brightness and contrast levels as the SE. Similarly to the SE half of the stars are gone and so are the garbage mattes.

Furthermore, it is marked as a 1997 change, but to be honest, I seriously doubt that they digitally tweaked any shots just to remove garbage mattes in 97. If anything, it would have been much easier in 2004 when they were working completely in the digital realm.

I know what you mean. I don't think we've actually removed any of the "official" changes yet...

Yes, you can see the garbage mattes in that shot in the '97SE, and I fully agree with you, have they actually cleaned up garbage mattes in any scene in the trilogy at all, that we know of? It's only gone when they have actually gone back and recomped them. It's easy to spot all the mattes by just turning up the brightness on the DVD-release and then you could remove many of the so called improvements on that list.

To read the comments for the official list of changes makes you want to punch the guy who wrote it in the face. ;)

I lined up the wipes and checked them for you, they have been redone twice. I didn't resize them in case you wanted to use them.

Original

1997 SE

2004 DVD - the reason why they redid this wipe? maybe because the scene it wipes to were completely redone in the computer.

Don't know how good these examples below are, all three wipes are extremely close in terms of timing

Original

1997 SE

2004 DVD - the reason why they redid this wipe? I have no idea, I know the scenes before it had recomposited starfields in some shots and they colorized the rank badge etc. but why redo this wipe?
