Community Focus Threads - Index and Overview — Page 3

This could be a big one, should we spin this out into a new thread? I’m more than happy to have the conversation here or in another thread, but I don’t want my threads to arrogantly dominate the front page!

I think that’d be fine, or perhaps in a future ‘month’ when we’re ready to dedicate time to it.

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

Here’s my ideas, only a few of which would be truly important:

Jake Lloyd saying he was repairing or fixing 3PO

3PO’s lines in 2 and 3 about flying

Maybe use it to truly make Padme sound like herself when in her queen persona (too much content in diverse soundscapes to work)

Maybe Obi-Wan addressing R2 in vague ways like “droid”

Anakin being referred to as “General” and stuff like that ala NFBisms’ ROTS project

Battle droids (and surfer dude Neimoidian) in first part of ROTS

Anakin expressing something about his son or kid having his lightsaber

Obi-Wan expressing hope that Anakin still can be saved, to Yoda, Padme, and to Anakin himself

Something to beef up the little conversation between Bail, Yoda, and Obi-Wan. Maybe Bail says something about taking Padme and Leia home with him and his wife, so the scene can be re-extended basically to its original length.

Don’t know where it’d fit, but some tiny nod from Old Ben to R2 that he recognizes him or knows what’s up.

Try getting a different performance for Boba Fett in ESB. I don’t know if cloning Wingreen’s performance would work, might just make him speak slowly rather than getting a vocal gravel like you’d want.

Probably don’t need a voice synthesizer for this, but give the tortured gonk droid a more robotic voice.

Han shouts to Jabba at the pit or Carkoon, calling him a son of a bitch.

Vader saying, “Your mother once thought as you do.” (Might be too humorous, as though Vader in his suit had an argument with his wife and just hit the road one day.)

Unmasked Vader/Anakin made to sound like Hayden.

Snoke could maybe say something at some point to foreshadow the retcon about him being a Palpatine proxy.

Something about the Hosnian system.

Poe calling Hux by name rather than “Hugs.”

Also replace Poe’s “big ass door” with something else that fits his mouth movements. Hate that line.

Give someone in TLJ a proper “bad feeling about this.”

Something from Kylo or Palpatine establishing that he’s a clone or in a clone body.

Something to establish that the Final Order is a modified imperial stockpile, maybe from Poe. Instead of being “the largest fleet the galaxy has ever known.”

Kylo’s “you were right.” And his “become a dyad” line. Or anything else to their effect if the tool gives us more freedom.

3PO’s memory wipe “oh my what is going on because you see I don’t know who you people are” dialogue replacements.

Anything with Leia in TROS.

Luke saying whatever is useful in TROS. I’m sure we’d think of something.

Anything with the Jedi voices to Rey.

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

We’re approaching the end of the first monthly focus thread (The Phantom Menace), so time to reflect!

Was it worthwhile, and should I continue with it? If so, should I start a second monthly thread soon, or should we allow the TPM one a bit more time to stay in focus? Was there anything in the thread OP that wasn’t worthwhile, or that I should add in future?

Right now, I think I’m swinging towards not continuing. While there was some good activity, and we generated some good ideas and collateral, I don’t think it did anything that couldn’t have been done in the existing radical ideas threads. I’m tempted to perhaps do a few deep dives in the existing radical threads for the remaining movies, but I feel like producing more monthly focus threads might just gunk up the forums a bit. That said, I think it was a very fun experiment and I’m pleased with some of the new ideas that emerged!

I actually felt it was pretty worthwhile. Even though we discussed quite a lot of topics, I feel like it at least kept the discussion on one particular movie without getting lost in other conversations. I think that genuinely gave us some solid ideas to work with. That being said, it does feel quite quick to move to another movie. It certainly seems like there’s a lot more to do - and a lot more material to create.

I think it was really worthwhile! I agree that it seems too fast to move onto another movie. I think the big positive was giving everyone something to consciously rally around; whether that’s done here or in the Radical threads may not matter too much. But ultimately, we started working on some new ideas for the most fanedited movie ever, which is pretty amazing.

EddieDean, one thing I will say is you should set your expectations accordingly. TROS was a brand new movie and to many the one weak link in an otherwise solid trilogy, so of course there was a lot of interest in doing something with it. I was surprised to see that the spark for TPM was still there, with your thread and the many contributions, but the fire didn’t last for very long, and I think that’s also easy to understand. But I thought it was an interesting experiment, perhaps it might work for ROTS or ROTJ, since those are two that I feel still have plenty of potential for future edits - certainly more than TPM or AOTC. Cheers.

EddieDean, I agree with evansj1983’s comments, and found your idea to focus on various movies in the franchise (and TV shows as well eventually?) to be very worthwhile too.

So I hope that you will consider continuing with your proposed ‘Index’ of individual threads, as I think they are a useful addition here, and I especially liked the way you laid out your helpful ‘scene overview’ descriptions for your initial topic concerning The Phantom Menace.

I had hoped to add some things to the first thread in your ‘Index’ within the next few days, and afterwards too eventually. And the same with the rest of your forthcoming threads, when time allowed. I’m sure others would still have things to add on each topic too, after the initial ‘monthly’ conversations have passed. Still, I’ll wait to see what you decide, and thanks for your efforts.

Ah, OK then! Well that’s all pretty optimistic! Perhaps I’ll just leave this one up for more time then, and leave making the second for when the work on this one slows down. In that case, I’ll try to produce some more discussion seeds over there, and see if we can’t squeeze more out of it! When I have time I’ll try to mockup a few of the ideas into new scenes too.

Thanks for the feedback guys!

Definitely keep these threads going, they are incredibly helpful and thought-provoking!

This first month of TPM doesn’t really have a pudding to find proof in the way Ascendant did. Ascendant channeled a phenomenon with many factors working in its favor, not least of which was the lockdown.

I dunno… perhaps a ‘final product’ of sorts could be pursued for each thread, which can terminate when you feel it’s matured. Maybe a demo reel of the finished products of the collab, which could be made available in high quality for others to take home and actually use for themselves. Just an idea that I’d imagine helping me if I were on top of this thing.

JEDIT: I will say that it seems you’ve lead this trial month well! And even though I haven’t had the time or headspace to contribute, leastways to TPM, it’s seemed to be a healthy process.

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

Even though I didn’t have a lot of personal time to contribute to it, I liked the conversations it sparked! And I think it gave us ideas for potential future changes.

Maybe we could have months where we could focused on specific ideas that need to be brainstormed and executed, rather than broader topics like a whole movie.

With that being said, I actually would like one of the next months (if not the next month) to be focused on Return of the Jedi. Recently I have been drifting from the PT and ST in my mind, and focusing more on the OT. The PT and ST really just chased the magic of the originals without really repeating it. thinking about changes that could be made to that film since it arguably where the problems began. Of course this movie has been discussed a lot over the years, but there are specific changes that I could see being executed on that maybe haven’t really happened in a definitive way yet.

I wouldn’t mind the “months” being as long as they need to be, with a specific end product emerging organically.

Maybe instead of chronological order, put the next movie to a vote?

Alright, well I really appreciate the feedback. Looks like I was being a little too pessimistic! Perhaps I was just getting burnt out on crunching through Jar Jar voice lines!

Some good ideas above. I like Omni and Hal’s suggestion that we strive to output tangible collateral, and perhaps I’ll promote it a little more loudly (top of the index and monthly thread, I reckon). So I’ll definitely give the TPM thread time to produce a little more, and finish off some of my own parts of that, before spinning up the next.

I had thought I’d create threads in chronological order, but I agree with RogueLeader that ROTJ is a strong contender for polish, and maybe it’d be more interesting and fresh to skip between movies a bit more. Faraday suggested a vote, so feel free to cast your votes here guys, but I’ll default to ROTJ next after TPM unless a strong majority emerges.

I think there’s a lot of potential for ROTJ so it has my vote too.

Looking back through the entire original post, it seems to invite comments/ideas on a wide range of ground to do with the featured movie or previous edits of it - and while most people will naturally have their own ‘subjective’ views of what they prefer concerning different aspects, I’ll be interested to see everyone’s current thoughts and comments on each of these ongoing topics.

So although I can only offer some of my own preferences when time allows, hopefully there may be an idea or two that others might like amongst them.

As far as what subject to cover next, your ‘Index’ doesn’t necessarily need to be in ‘chronological’ order (or even ‘monthly’), as I’m sure you’ll cover the rest of the prequels, etc. eventually…so mix things up in whatever order makes things easiest for yourself.

I certainly intend to contribute more to the TPM thread when I have some extra time to pick at the movie. I still think these threads are good ideas, even if they have to last much longer than a single month to really get anywhere.

A lot of the discussion in the TROS Ascendant thread came from the fact people were arguing back and forth over exactly how to execute a change, but that’s not something that can really happen in a thread which isn’t producing a single product, since it’s easy to just agree to disagree.

Author
Time

Yeah, that’s a good shout. I’ll try to encourage the execution of ideas and creation of collateral independently of subjective opinion, so we build up a library of tangible ideas and assets.

I have a few ideas for some ROTJ edits that I think are doable. Some have been done and others haven’t, and have been brought up over and over again. Some things are stuff that I think Adywan will eventually do, but since Ady has a longer timeline for his edits usually, it might be cool to go ahead and make some of those things even if Ady’s eventual work will be superior.

And if we actually can execute some of these ideas, perhaps we can make a Google drive and upload the assets for other people.

I guess we’ll just have to work on the EddieDean Exhaustive and Complete Star Wars Saga Overhaul.

I’ll look forward to ROTJ as well, especially RogueLeader’s ideas. Personally, TPM feels tired given my history with it.

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

I actually did play around with the Jar Jar audio awhile back, but it appeared that the dialogue wasn’t isolated very well, making alterations to his dialogue feel like a lot of pain with minimum reward.

And for me personally, as time goes on I feel like trying to improve the PT and ST is a Sisyphean task. They are fun rides but the issues are too ingrained to really make them extremely different from the theatrical versions. But that’s just me at the moment. Definitely think there are stuff in those movies to discuss for future community focus months.

We’ll get more blood from this stone yet!

One thing I did think we’d see more of in the thread (which I’d still like to see personally) for the more frequently edited movies is people advocating for their preferred edits. Not everyone posts a changelog, so it’s sometimes hard to know what’s covered, and sometimes even a changelog makes it hard to get a feel for the major scene changes and stuff. Personally I’m a Hal adherent, but I’m always interested in other approaches, and nobody can watch them all.

I vote for ROTJ as well.
