Info & Help Wanted: Coming To Your Screens Summer 2007 - Super8 OT project...

 (Edited)

All this Bullshit about the new transfers is just getting me down, so I’ve decided to undertake a new project following on from the Super 8 thread that initially looked promising, but died a slow death last week sometime. Now I’ve got some decent Super 8 reels and I’ve also got someone lined up to professionally transfer them to DVD for me. Thing is I’m a little short on funds.

Now most of you here know me, you know I can produce some quality stuff, and when I say the new Feta Super 8 Project will surpass any project I have thus far undertaken, you can believe it. So I’d like to come with cap in hand and ask for donations to carry this project out. I’m also up for any suggestions or input any of the regulars here are willing to give. The total cost is around $300US but I’m willing to pick up any shortfall. So if you’re keen to help out and kick in a few bucks my thanks to you and rest assured you’ll be first in line for a copy.

Cheers for any help you can provide.

Which Super 8 version are you using for this? Can your transfer pro handle 600-800 ft. reels?

depending on where you live....START RECYCLING!! At least here in CA, I know you can make BANK doing simple recycling. My high school wrestling coach would put on a pair of gloves, get one of those grabber things for only a few $$$, then go through the top of the dumpster at the high school.

He was doing it hardcore and was pulling down a few hundred a week, but even then...if you scale it way back and just keep all of your stuff and some of your friends...you can put a major dent in that bill.

I'm not sure exactly what process he does use, but he comes highly recommended, but more than likely I'll do some post production frame by frame clean up. The reels I'm using are the 17 minute colour reels with sound.

boba feta is from New Zealand and I doubt such a recycling plan would work there, we have nothing like that in Australia, we just expect to recycle for nothing.

Ooh, a laserdisc. The Cheat's playin' something on a laserdisc.
Everything is better on a laserdisc. Whatever happened to the laserdisc? Laserdisc!

Count me in! Can you elaborate on what's on them exactly?

That's no moon. It's a LaserDisc.

I don't really know a lot, the covers don't exactly give it away, so it'll be just as much of a surprise for me. What I do know is one contains the Cantina scene (how much of it I'm unsure) and "the extra-ordinary rebel attack on the Death Star, the dogfights, the missile runs and the final climactic devastating blow".

I just hope all the reels are different.

Sounds like you've got the Volume 1 & 2 versions of the reels.

Star Wars Vol 1 contains - blockade runner, jawas, droid sale, Ben & the Force, cell block shootout, chasm swing, lightsaber duel and escape from Death Star.

Star Wars Vol 2 contains - Luke sees Leia's image, sand people attack, entrance to Mos Eisley, cantina interior, Tatooine escape, Alderaan explosion, Death Star arrival, Yavin approach, Death Star battle and medal ceremony.

Can't find a list of the Empire reel contents.

When I first read the first post here about this project, I assumed Super 8 was what they used to show the movies in the theaters. Then I read some other posts and it's just certain scenes?

Huh, what does Super 8 mean? And what exactly in full detail for dummies like me, will exactly be in this project? So I assume now it's just a selection of scenes and not the whole movies? Help! I confusded. I have no idea what this is. None whatsoever.

Super 8 is slightly different than 8mm. See here for a visual aid.
Many a college campus to this day show feature films in 16mm.
Boba Feta, what kind of projector are you using? Looks like yours crops the frame less than mine!

My film tech uses Cold Light Projection (with Super White LEDs) and a Sony DXC 755 3 CCD (with Fujion Lens) built into the projector itself. Doesn't say exactly what model projecter it is he's using though.

Yeah it's simply 4 reels (two Star Wars, two Empire) each with 17 minutes of selected scenes. There's all sorts of goodies in there, Jambe's documented several different audio takes in the Empire reels, so It'll certainly be interesting to see the final product.

OK, I understand a little better now. But who are the Super 8 thingies made for? Were they availiable in Kmart for just anyone to buy and watch at home? Was the whole movie made in this format? Why were they made, for what purpose?

It was originally developed in the 60's by Kodak as a precursor to the home video market.

Back in the 70's, Kmart had a rack of Super 8 movies for sale. I'm sure other dept. stores did as well. I never saw full length movies for sale, but complete films (usually a set of four reels for a two hour film) are still sold by Derann in the UK to this day. And a certain movie trilogy apparently was a big seller for them. They actually still have ROTJ listed for sale, but it's not cheap!

This is cool just for a curiosity. Obviously Super 8 footage looks like shit--about the same as a VHS, if not less, and considering these are almost 30 years old, they look more like an Nth generation VHS dub. The screenshots on the website don't disagree with that either. However, in spite of all this, this is a wonderful thing to have, purely for curiosity's sake. Good job, boba feta, transfering film usually isn't easy.

You haven't seen an anamorphic Derann Super 8 print yet.

But why would they release just parts of the movies? I guess thats mostly what I don't understand.

Releasing a 120min film on Super8 would probably be a lot more film than anyone really wanted to own at that time.

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

(gets out the 'ol Rocking Chair...)

You see, back in the day (A long time ago... the 70's), VCRs weren't commercially viable for consumer use, so Super 8mm was the most standard, well, standard for viewing movies in the home. The films were expensive, so most people bought digests. The digests came in 50, 200 and 400ft reels. At Sound speed (24fps), that was about 2, 7, and 17 minutes per reel, respectively. These 400 ft color sound reels went to the more discriminating Super 8mm buyers. Most of us kids at the time bought the 200ft black and white, silent versions to relive our movie thrills.

I had most of these reels, but sold them a few years back for some quick cash. It would be wonderful to see these again!

BTW, I believe the ESB reels went as follows:

Reel one: Battle on Hoth, Dagobah crash landing and the asteroid field.
Reel two: More Dagobah, Bespin sequence.

Bring them on!

Finally! A desent explaination! That's all I wanted. The 70's were crap. Except the three years I was alive 76-79. And I didn't know a movie from a poopie diaper in that time. Well maybe a little.
