Comedians! I consider myself a comedy fan. I'm no expert but I feel like I know slightly more about comedy that the average joe.

My top 3 well known comedians are

3: Jim Gaffigan

2: Mitch Hedberg

1: Brian Regan

(I hear Carlin is great but haven't seen anything by him yet)

Lesser known comedians:

3: Junior Stopka

2: Drew Michael

1: James Fritz

(Mostly know them from http://redbarradio.com/ My favorite podcast.)

So, who are your favorite comics?

Just making sure he was mentioned already. Good, clean, high-energy comedy.

I also found I like Dave Chappelle. Which is the opposite of Regan, I suppose. ;-)

Some people are against porno movies, and I say hey, Ohio, Kentucky, and Iran: I say, hey - whatever a man, and a woman, and another woman with a penis and a midget do to a donkey, that's their garsh-darn bidness.

Wendy Liebman : http://www.wendyliebman.com/ (quick word shifts)

Patton Oswalt : http://www.pattonoswalt.com/ (who else is going to go back in time to do the deed)

Colin  Quinn : http://colinquinnlongstoryshort.com/ (Touch Crowd had a great set of comedy people)  and kills at roasts.

Maria Bamford : http://www.mariabamford.com/ (accents/personalities turn on a dime)

listen to a lot of Howard Stern so there's a bunch of comedy people, who's acts i'm not that inspired by, but when they are interviewed on the show they're awesome.

Lisa Lampanelli : http://www.insultcomic.com/

Whitney Cummings : http://www.whitneycummings.com/ (stand up routine is so generic, but she's great being interviewed, and kills on roasts)

Jonathan Winters : http://www.jonathanwinters.com/ (just plain loonily wonderful)

Hmm... We are huge Brian Regan fans and I quite enjoyed Gaffigan when we watched one of his shows...  It seems I'll have to follow up with this Mitch Hedberg of which you speak.

IT'S MY TRILOGY, AND I WANT IT NOW!

"[George Lucas] rebooted the franchise in 1997 without telling anyone." -skyjedi2005

"Yeah, well, George says a lot of things..." a young 1997 xhonzi on RASSM

"They're my movies." -George Lucas. 19 people won oscars for their work on Star Wars (1977) and George Lucas wasn't one of them.

Rewrite the Prequels!

I find his TV persona to be nigh unwatchable, but I got a huge kick out of Daniel Tosh's standup.

I also dig Mike Birbiglia of "my public secret journal.'

I gotta go with the classics.  In no particular order...

  • George Carlin
  • Rodney Dangerfield
  • Richard Pryor
  • Bill Cosby
  • Gallagher (the rest of his show, not the 5 minutes of sledgehammer and watermelon mess that he's known for)

The next generation after them...

  • Richard Jeni
  • Dennis Miller
  • Tim Allen

And on a still younger note...

  • Adam Ferrara
  • Gabriel Iglesias
  • Christopher Titus

My outlook on life - we’re all on the Hindenburg anyway…no point fighting over the window seat.

Wot no Flip Wilson?

I love Rusty Warren, Mrs Shufflewick, Pearl Bailey, Margret Cho, Chris Morris, Victor Lewis Smith, Stewart Lee and I'm a big fan of Round The Horne and The Goons but one of the funniest people I've ever heard was the late Jazz legend Humphrey Lyttelton.

There are a lot of people I like but i forget names.

Henry Rollins - he's more of a storyteller but can be pretty funny.

Bill Hicks.

and pretty much all those guys and gals ^^

and usually when the guys get together for [far too many] drinks someone will start taking the piss out of Cosby or Seinfeld...

Larry David's standup was supposedly pretty funny if you are into his kind of thing.  He showed off a little of it in the pilot for Curb Your Enthusiasm.

I didn't feel qualified to answer this when it was posted, so I watched about 65 stand-up specials and am 8 seasons into Comedy Central Presents.

These are my favourites in no order:

Bill Hicks

George Carlin

Russell Peters

Bill Burr

Greg Giraldo

Ricky Gervais

Carl Barron

Richard Jeni

Daniel Tosh

Mitch Hedberg

Louis C.K.

Patton Oswalt

Steven Wright

Tom Cotter's was probably my favourite Comedy Central performance so far. Regan was OK, but Gaffigan's "lady in the audience" voice really pissed me off after a while. Still a lot to check out.

He was always on Hey Hey, It's Saturday pretending to shove a pencil up his nose and pull it out of his ear.

Great list KO², Bill Hicks and George Carlin are the two greatest comedians who ever lived, if you ask me.

Yeah, it was in no order but it's not coincidence that those two are at the top. Also add Bill Bailey. Lewis Black is pretty funny too though his material is nearly all political.

And Louie C.K.'s show Louie is honestly the funniest show I've ever seen.

It's already surpassed Curb Your Entrusiasm, Seinfield, Arrested Development, Trailer Park Boys, Always Sunny, Eastbound & Down, Tim & Eric, etc., etc. and it's only in it's second season.

Damn, I liked the first few episodes but never got back to it. Sounds like I'll have to look at some of those others too. I haven't seen 3 out of the last 4 you mentioned, and only a season or two of Always Sunny. I love Curb Your Enthusiasm. I have never been so uncomfortable while thoroughly enjoying myself.

Stop.

I've never seen a single episode, and there's no way this could be true for any of those examples.

Although in fairness I prefer Curb Your Enthusiasm to Curb Your Entrusiasm myself.

It is a bold claim. How can anything be better than Arrested Development?

Oh yeah, I've finally watched a bunch of George Carlin on netflix and he as surpassed Jim Gaffigan for me on my top comics list.

Exactly, it is a bold statement.  I previously thought Arrested and Curb were the two best, I've since changed my mind.

Well, it's in my queue, so when the DVD comes out, we will find out once and for all.

You better be right!!!
