I'm going to check it out anyway, just to see how damn psychotic Batman is in this series.

BTW, I got accepted to UNC at Chapel Hill today, so thats one thing less to worry about.

Duke Sucks!!!! LOL...Good luck and congrats. I'm a UCONN fan, so I hate Duke with a passion. It always amazes me how the selection committee somehow puts them in Raleigh, Durham for the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament every year... *cough* favoritism *cough*. UNC has a proud tradition.

Well here I go again! Sheesh!

Damn me but I'm starting to be bitten by the comics bug again. Sigh. Just what I need- more stuff to spend money on!

I've recently read and enjoyed the 'Identity Crisis' series from DC (I'm playing catch-up) which I really enjoyed- I thought it was extremely well done with maybe the exception of the final issue which seemed a bit weak though that could be because of the cross-overs being needed to fill in gaps... not sure haven't read them.

Of course this has me interested in the currently running 'Infinite Crisis' series... there goes more $$$.

Other recent purchases:

The first two issues of SlaveLaborGraphics' 'Haunted Mansion' series. Fun stuff there but then again I'm a Haunted Mansion junkie.

The Neil Gaiman Marvel mini-series '1602'. I read the first issue last night and it seemed a good start and I'm looking forward to the rest.

Keep in mind I haven't bought/read much since 1998 so I'm a bit behind.

You're not the only one - I lost track of comics when my subscriptions to Justice League and Fantastic Four expired and I forgot to renew them (that was around 1999...).

About the only thing I've learned of recently is that they brought back Hal Jordan as the main Green Lantern - and I have no idea why.

I had heard that as well. I'm sure someone who has kept up can explain. I had remembered that he became one with The Spectre for awhile and was still there in a kinda touching scene in 'Identity Crisis'. Hal alludes to 'working on' coming back from the dead when Green Arrow makes a crack about them all knowing that death is never final for heroes. I'm sure that was a lead-in.

It's essentially fandom complaints that brought Jordan back.

Kyle Rainer is now, apparently permanently, Ion once again, Guy Gardner is... somewhere in space with Kyle, and John Stewart is... ah, heck if I know.

Yes, he jumped off the comics page and painted himself up in white-face. That explains EVERYTHING!

Wow. And here I thought fans had accepted Kyle as Green Lantern.

But there is one dead hero who has managed to stay dead - Barry Allen, AKA: Flash #2! Not that there was anything wrong with him...

I'd hate to turn this into a casting thread, but do you fellows have any ideas on who could play Hal Jordan, Kyle Rayner, Guy Gardner, John Stewart and/or, do I dare suggest it, the original Green Lantern, Alan Scott?

http://www.stx-superhero-report.com/images/alan_scott.jpg

Or the lethal lovely Star Sapphire?

Yeah I did did as well. He seemed a decent replacement in keeping witht the other events of the DCU.

Never say never, friend. I like that he's been kept dead because it honors his sacrifice in COIE which I found to be the most moving scene in that entire series second only to Supergirl's death. But who knows what they'll be doing (have done?) in the new 'Infinite Crisis' series.

Hmmm... the first person who jumps to mind for Star Sapphire for me would be (a probably younger) Mimi Rogers. I'll have to think about the guys though. And please dare suggest because I at least feel Alan Scott is one of the coolest GLs!

Well, I just finished the original Crisis on Infinite Earths TPB. I stand by what I said recently: Fantasic artwork and story, dialogue and "internalizing" very dated. I also just finished the "Sacrifice" TPB in which...

SPOILER

Superman is being controlled by Maxwell Lord, whome Wonder Woman kills to break the spell. Very good. Very good art. Now I can finally read Infinite Crisis (was holding off to re-read COIE).

Has anyone been getting the Infinite Crisis "Specials", ie: DOV, RTW, etc?

I just ordered several of the IC lead-ins but haven't read any yet. Which leads me to couple of other thoughts-

1) I've read and been a fan of both Marvel and DC but after browsing the racks I have very little interest in the stuff Marvel is putting out these days. It seems like they took what was already a segmented universe and made it even more convoluted by re-vamping series with the 'Ultimate' lines while still maintaining some semblence of original continuity. On the other hand the DCU seems to be the place to go for good reads.

2) The impending release of the 'Ultimate Avengers' direct to DVD animated film sounded like a good idea when I heard about it but the clip here: Ultimate Avengers clip on SHH just looks like the same old cruddy animation that Marvel Productions has been cranking out since the late 80s! Wow they added some motion blur but why can't they add some different layout artists or *gasp* someone who knows perspective?!?!

I had always been a DC person. Then I stopped reading all together around 91. I got back into it around early 04 and have the following to say: I think DC is getting back to what makes it great, and from what I read it's much needed after a ho-hum decade or so since the crash. Nice "event" arcs, with awesome tie-ins, fantastic art, and good stories. Continuity seems solid, although I reserve final opinion until IC is done. Marvel - I have only come to Marvel since 04, starting with Daredevil and Amazing Spidey. However, I recently expanded to all the Spidey titles, New Avengers, Punisher, Supreme Power (Soon to be Squadron Supreme), and now Book of Lost Souls. I find taken on their own, Marvel's characters and artwork are superior to DC, however: The Marvel universe as I know it (which is little) seems quite disjointed, and they also seem to have no success at cleaning up continuity. From what I've heard House of M, etc were all pretty much a rapid response to IC, which is not a good way to be. I think the more titles J. Michael Straczynski writes, the better off Marvel is. He is one of the best things going for them right now, along with Peter David.

I too, am amazed at the crappy animation of Marvel's tv products. Heck, even the Teen Titans series, which was heavily influenced by Anime, was VASTLY superior to anything Marvel's got going. My goodness, the other day I was watching X-Men and couldn't believe it was made in 1999. Thought it was something from 1983. Very poor.

It seems as though Marvel animation at some point said, as a company, "Aha- we have made G.I. Joe and our skills are complete! We shall progress no further!"

David: Friendly Neighborhood Spiderman, Straczynski: Amazing Spiderman, Fantastic 4, Squadron Supreme (shipping in a few months, pick up the Supreme Power: Hyperion mini, if you can), and Book of Lost Souls (very dark, in the vein of Sandman)

LOL!! I think GI Joe (the 80's version) is better than what they're doing now...

Cool thanks- I'll look for them. Did you ever read the Squadron Supreme maxi-series from the 80s? Good stuff then I thought- kinda interesting doing the Marvel take on the JLA. Lost Souls sound good as well and I'm certainly a Sandman fan!

I agree. Its so NOT difficult to do better animation than they're doing now. Its really odd.

I just finished the Sandman series...The Wake was fantastic. I think the best story of all of them was Rhamadan (sp?). Awesome. It's the one where a sultan asks Morpheus to make Baghdad a city of dreams. Think it was in the Fables and Reflections TPB. Great, great story. Did you read Endless Nights? I've heard some not good things about it, and I don't want to ruin my Sandman experience by reading it.

Ahhh yes, Ramadan... issue #50. Great, great tale.

Endless Nights was a good read but far from the best out there. It feels more like it should have been backup features in the main Sandman book rather than its own mini-series. But if you've enjoyed what you've read so far than by all means give it a go. A couple of the tales are 'meh' but others are gems. Plus it gave Gaiman a chance to work with some artists he liked but that he didn't see doing a full story arc. (Gaiman always hand-picked his artists rather than having them assigned to the book by DC, or so the story goes.)

I only recently discovered Gaiman by starting the Sandman library about a year ago. Got his book American Gods in late October and finished it about a month ago. Great, great book. I've got some of his others waiting to be read. Have you read any of his books? He has a gift, that's for sure.

LOL- I'm halfway through 'American Gods' right now! Previously read 'Good Omens', 'Neverwhere' (and bought the BBC TV mini-series) and his short story collection 'Smoke and Mirrors'. Looking forward to 'Anansi Boys' and 'Stardust'. Not many other authors- comics or otherwise- get the idea of myth like Gaiman does.

Check out his spoken word CDs too if you get a chance. The one I have is called 'Warning: Contains Language'.
