"Close the blast doors"

Back in the early 90’s I swear I saw a version of Star Wars where the Stormtroopers chasing Han and Chewie in the Death Star said “Close the blast doors”, only to have Han and Chewie jump through as they were closing, then they said the line we have in there now “Open the blast doors”. I thought it was hilarious. It’s obviously not in the '77 theatrical release, but I swear I saw it way before the 97 Special Edition. Anyone know where this first appeared?

Yeah, I can’t watch the movie without that line in it. It’s my favorite gag in the film.

Interestingly the “Close the Blast Doors” phrase was there from the beginning in the German Dub. At least my 1990 VHS TV Rip contains it (“Schließt die Panzertüren!”).

ROGUE ONE is redundant. Just play the first mission of DARK FORCES.

It will never be the same after you watch Rogue One

I saw the original theatrical release of the Old Trilogy on the big screen and I'm proud of it...

Nice. I thought it was just in the SE. Now I can happily enjoy that line without feeling SE shame.
Now I gotta check despecialized to see if that audio track is there.

edit: sweet its there.

This has always been one of my favorite moments in SW77

PS we should start deferring to the movie variations like that to save time SW77, SW97 ESB80 ROTJ83 SW81…
Thoughts?

Agreed. If nothing else, it’d help distinguish between SW77 and everything since SW81 (the re-release that added “A New Hope” to the crawl).

Correct me if I’m wrong, but weren’t the foreign languages dubs based on the mono track? If so, then that’d make sense.

Yes, it’s not easy to retrace why this specific phrase was included in the German dub, but on the other hand was completely absent from the english audio track. But it’s not the only audio anomaly in the German dub. As Adywan pointed out in this thread

http://originaltrilogy.com/topic/The-missing-Dianoga-music/id/52246

a specific music cue was included in the German dub, but once again was absent from the english audio track in the first place. So, yeah that is the question: which mono track was used by the german dubbing studio to create the audio track?

Did they really do this?

I remember the first time I noticed that guy smack his helmed forehead, probably on approx. my 75th viewing of the film.
Ever since, I can’t see anything else.
God that actor musta felt like an asshole. It probably really hurt—he hits that shit pretty hard!

Yeah, the sound was added in for the 2004 DVD release to tie in with another gag that ties back into this one. In AotC, they made a callback to this by having Jango Fett bang his head on the door of Slave I. And so now the comedy is that Jango’s clumsy DNA got into the Stormtrooper vats! Har har har!

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming... Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Gaffer is like a phantom ship; you don’t see it (or him) too often, but when it (he) makes an appearance, it’s a momentous occasion.

Well, at least I’m not a Phantom Menace: you don’t see it too often, but when it makes an appearance, you wish you were watching a better movie.

Yes, Lucas mentions that in the AOTC audio commentary at the very specific scene. Another one of these many things he thought that would be considered … funny.

I think they might have actually added an impact noise for the mono mix. At least that’s what it sounds like. Right as he hits his head you hear a *ktch* like noise.

I thought the ktch noise was the other trooper initializing his radio.
