My answer: Hell ya! I'd get them myself if I had the money/opportunity to do so.
I know that they are from Archie Goodwin's newspaper strips, and apparently they were very well illustrated and scripted comics, however, I heard somewhere that the "Classic Star Wars" collections have been edited, which I hope doesn't mean curtailed or abridged.
I'm a big fan of the Marvel Star Wars comics (particularly Goodwin's work), and I hope that these Classic collections are something that you can recommend!

-It's called STAR WARS. NOT "Episode IV: A New Hope". Kids, get this straight.

Or what ones do you mean?
IT'S MY TRILOGY, AND I WANT IT NOW!
"[George Lucas] rebooted the franchise in 1997 without telling anyone." -skyjedi2005
"Yeah, well, George says a lot of things..." a young 1997 xhonzi on RASSM
"They're my movies." -George Lucas. 19 people won oscars for their work on Star Wars (1977) and George Lucas wasn't one of them.
No. That's the first volume of the Star Wars Marvel comics. I'm talking about this...

They're great. A little repetitive since they were published in a newspaper so sometimes the story doesn't go fo forward for like a page. But they are classic SW at its best. If you're already a Goodwin fan then why are you even asking? Go and get them.
The Dark Horse versions I guess are colored and maybe edited, don't know about them or any US version. They published three albums in black & white and I guess unedited in my country and they were fine. If you can find that kind of releases, get them. They were released here in maybe 2004 and 2005 and I think Dark Horse released these in the 90s in the US.
And in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as the Son of the Suns.
The Dark Horse Classic Star Wars reprints are pretty cool. I guess you could say they're somewhat abridged. They were edited together and the repetitive panels that repeated dialog and story elements were removed. They're not really missed since really it was just the same thing said in a different way. What's nice about them though is that they got Al Williamson himself to work on it. So there are brand new panels he drew to better format the strip to the standard comic page. I myself prefer reading them in their original format. Color isn't needed, his art looks fantastic in black and white.
The original newspaper strips are available to view at various sites across the web, with one inparticular showing one strip per day in the same way they were done back in the day....

I know that they do not show the format printed in the Classic Star Wars or Classic Star Wars - The Early Adventures, but at least you can judge for yourself if they are worth getting or not.
The only answer by the way is "Yes they are worth getting"
Anything with the original Star Wars film cast in it is 10 times better than anything with any other characters in it, which makes them better than most of the last 10 years of Dark Horse output in my very humble opinion.

What a cooincidence, I just found these two books at the thrift shop last week:

Special Edition adaptations? I wonder how they handled Luke's scream. =P
The ad copy at the time implied the SE comics were going to replace the Marvel versions. Thankfully, that never happened. ;)
Where were you in '77?
They sure treat the original adaptation of SW like the black sheep of the family, though. They didn't even include it in "The Complete Saga" Omnibus collection.
No, you shouldn't. Also, you should go outside more, and you should call your Mom more than once a month, even though she says you don't have to.
I might wait to see how they handle that material for the Omnibus. (didn't they say they would get to reprinting every possible thing from that era? Maybe it will have the extra stuff from the newspapers? could be remembering that wrong..)

According to the back of the books, they're just "special commemorative issue(s) celebrating the return of the Star Wars trilogy to the big screen."
The inside says "This book was previously published as Star Wars #39-44 by Marvel Comics, Classic Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back #1 and 2, and the trade-paperback collection entitled Classic Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back."
There are a few pages of concept art/storyboards in the back of the books though that say "Look for these scenes in the Special Edition of..."

There were Special Edition adaptations put out by Dark Horse.

They did do reprints of the Marvels, but with new duller coloring than the originals.

I don't get the point in posting this as a response. For one thing, I go outside and swim in my pool several hours a day, and I live with my parents now as I'm back from my Freshman year of college this Summer, so you are mistaken in both claims. If this was meant as humor and not an insult, then I still don't see the point in your response, since this is a Star Wars OT fan-based website and a post, such as I have posted, is completely appropriate and I should not be mocked, insulted, or so on on this site of all sites.
I would expect this from non-fans, thugs, and Prequel "Youngling" fans (stupid word for stupid people) who would find these old Star Wars comics "boring" and "stupid" because they lack CGI and Jar-Jar every panel. haha!

You asked for advice, I gave it. Apparently I gave more than you expected. Obviously I don't know anything about you, be it your inside-to-outside ratio or your frequency of calls to your mother. So based on that, you can probably figure out if I was joking or not.
To be clear, I wasn't mocking you, I was just making a joke about the thread title. But your response is worthy of mocking, and as soon as I can think of a humorous way to do so, I'll be sure to post it.
I can count the number of serious posts I've read by TV's Frink on two hands. It's a joke, and completely innocent in intent. If I can find it, I should locate my early reaction to Frink's posts, which offended me at the time before I realized what a nice guy he really is. I was young (to this site) and foolish back then.

All right. It's really most appropriate to spend time "one-upping" another, rather than trying to converse about something we all mutually love. Fine, go the route of the former!

Well, then maybe I am the foolish one! I am relatively new to this Forum, after all. I've only been here for 2 months (?), so I'm not familiar with everybody yet!

The best response to Frink's joke is probably something more like this:
TV's Frink, I was at your mom's last night. She told me the that her you don't even call her that often. But don't you worry; I was there to comfort her.
He loves that sort of thing ;)

Of course he does! He films the whole thing!
Then George Lucas uses CGI to make the night's events look pretty!
