Wow, that's pretty cool.  I also enjoyed reading the description.

There is no lingerie in space…

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

God, there's got to be 70mm prints around somewhere...wonder what all is in the Fox vaults? It's not like it would kill anyone to play SW in a few art houses...even if it is the 97SE.

Well you should ask around but “be careful R2” he might have a gun!

A print of the film (a 70mm print valued at $10,000) was stolen at gunpoint from the GLENWOOD Theatre in Overland Park, Kansas. The CENTRE Theatre in Salt Lake City, Utah experienced some weather-related damage, prompting its 70mm “Jedi” engagement to be relocated for a two-week period to the REGENCY. An engagement at the CONTINENTAL Theatre in Denver, Colorado was terminated following damage from a fire.

This means someone still has possession of stolen “Return of the Jedi” no doubt the colour has faded and the magnetic stripe tracks have flaked or if passed though a 70mm penthouse today, it be damaged without proper care.

So I wonder what pyrite Return of the Jedi looked like as the tail, tail sign is the que dots would be (circularly) for 70mm and (oval shaped) for 35mm prints so it would be easy to see on the VHS/Beta tapes.

I’m wondering about the stolen “Return of the Jedi” 70mm print. Is this still an ongoing investigation?

Now was the pyrite version of “Return of the Jedi” scored from the stolen 70mm print or 35mm?

The only way to tell is to look at any still existing VHS/Beta tape and look for que dots.

(Circularly) for 70mm

(Oval shaped) for scope 35mm prints

Que dots appear around every 15 to 20 minutes depending on each reel length.

Also any privately brought new/second hand 70mm projectors in the past 10 years leading up to the theft at gunpoint in 1983, or any stolen 70mm projectors for this persons needs to make dodgy pyrite copies.

Chances are the print today would be so far, gone faded colour magnetic stripe would be fragile if not flaked away by now, due to poor storage.

Was there also a similar case in the UK of stolen “Return of the Jedi” print as I remember reading on huge poster at video library around 1983, and the theft in the US wouldn’t concern the UK.

So was this a simultaneous coordinated theft by two parties working on different sides?

I’m, sure the FBI would like to catch these people? Maybe they are STAR WARS nuts or just pair of serious pyrites that wouldn’t care about shooting someone.

One of the other comments on that page claims the print was later recovered in the home of the thief, a former employee.

A 70mm print wouldn't have done anyone much good back then. Telecine facilities capable of transferring the larger format didn't exist until the early 1990's. Swiping a 35mm print makes more sense from a logistical standpoint.

No crap! Well that doesn’t surprise me he has telecine to do near perfect transfers.

What about the gun was that found at the scene?
