So my uncle just got back from China and got me this cool watch. http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/7379/img0433fv0.jpg
But it also makes me think what do you think about what it going on with china now what with the Olympics and the Tibet protests?

That is a really cool watch actually! If I had one I would really wear it. It would be fun to see how many people notice it and how they react to it.

COOL?! The guy on your watch is a mass murderer!

No different from the people that walk around wearing shirts of Che Guerra really.

I keep hoping the protests that are popping up all over the world over the Olympics in China will serve as a wakeup call to everyone. I'm sure that won't happen though since people just don't care unless it's in their face. I lose a little more hope for humanity every day.

Yeah and how often do you get an authentic piece of Chinese propaganda?

Those Che Guerra shirts have always really bothered me. Seems like people wear them just because they are cool and not because they really know what he stood foor. At least with Sean's watch the reference is so blatant. Also it is an authentic piece or Chinese propaganda, not something purchased at the local hot topic.

I am very anti-communist, but I'd really have a lot of fun wearing that watch around. It would become one of my most prized possessions I am sure. If I ever make it to China, I'll be sure to buy one. It would make a great companion to my small collection of Soviet medals.

I love China as a country but I'm afraid the regime is trying to make China the world's only superpower. Really, Iran, N-Korea, Iraq, etc are no threat at all compared to China. The way in which China is trying to "conquer" Africa for its resources is also alarming.
I read this article about Chinese counterfeit hardware a few days ago. Makes me wonder how save my modem with build-in firewall is...
Maybe everyone in Firefly also speeking Chinese isn't such a bad prediction after all.

It's amazing how much the world powers are willing to bend over for China. We should not let the torch set one foot on our soil and we should be boycotting the Olympics until the situation in Tibet is solved equitably. Pie in the sky I know, but let's have SOME pride for God's sake.

Every time I buy something that says "Made in China", it feels like an authentic piece of propaganda.

What's blatant about it? It's a Chinese guy waving with the Chinese flag in the background. It's not like the guy is ordering the execution of a prisoner right there on the watch. In either case, if you don't know who the guy is or what he's done, you'd have no idea what you're wearing.

You're not likely to find shirts of Che Guerra in Venezuela (I think that's the right country) precisely because of what he stood for. On the other hand, the Chinese government wants to look as good as possible, even while doing evil and nasty things. To that end, they're more than willing to sell you watch with the guy waving his hand against the backdrop of the Chinese flag.

Despite what that article might make you think, you don't have anything to worry about. Selling counterfeit hardware essentially comes down to not putting it through certification tests. Since they don't put it through the tests that Cisco requires, they can't ship it to Cisco to be sold. Since they can't ship it, they simply sell it locally with the Cisco name on it anyway. There's not necessarily anything else that goes on.

It's like buying a counterfeit copy of Windows on the streets of China for $1. There's nothing wrong with it and it probably doesn't have any back doors, it just has a volume license key that doesn't have to be activated and it cost them nothing to obtain it.

What is blantant about it??? That is not just some Chinese guy, that is Mao Tse-tung. That is about as blatant as wearing Joseph Stalin or Adolf Hitler on your wrist.

Che Guerra is not from Venezuela, he is from Agentina, but he is famous for his involvment in the Cuban Revolution. He was one of Fidel Castro's men, until the United States captured and executed him. He is a Cuban national hero and you will likely not only find depictions of him on clothes and watches in Cuba, but you will find many statues, momuments and memorials dedicated to him as well. He is a hero for what he stood for and loved for it by many though not all Cubans. Or at least they have to pretend they love him, certian governments are a bit quarky like that.

In my opinion, China and clothing stores who sell shirts with Guevara are doing the same thing, propaganda. Only the clothing stores do it for money, and the idiots who buy the stuff buy it because it is cool and either they are the hippie types who think they are real communisnts because communism is the way to go, or they simply just want to be cool and have no idea nor care who the hell the guy on their shirt is.

$1 + $9.99 shipping. Actually, there seems to be different qualities of Tse-tung watches on ebay, the one without numerals like Seans goes for quite a bit more, the one that is going for a dollar has large numerals and looks pretty crappy.

What doesn't cost a dollar in China? From what I've heard there is a lot of great deals like he got quite a bit of DVDs for $1 each with good quality.

I get that. You get that. The average idiot on the street probably doesn't get that. Yeah, the average idiot on the street knows Hitler. They might even recognize Stalin (that one's borderline). I seriously doubt the average idiot has a single clue who Mao Tse-Tung is, let alone what he did.

People can tell you what Hitler did. They might be able to tell you what Stalin did. I don't think they even know who Mao is.

Two anti-American, mass murdering, communists.

Hundreds of thousands of American soldiers have given their lives protecting us from communist dictators and leaders who reveled in killing Americans and destroying our country & our way of life. Now their images are being worn as fashion statements by the Echo Boomers.

Fucking obscene.

No I'm afraid it was just a gift. An interesting one. Not a fashion statement.

Even though I said I earlier that I think I would be fun to wear a Mayo watch around, I'd like to clarify that I agree with you, I really think it is obscene. My wearing it would be a form of mockery of the Echo Boomers, but now that it seems that these things sale on ebay fairly commonly, I guess it wouldn't be much of a mockery.

I do like to collect communist trinkets though, and I have a few soviet things as well as things from some of the tinier former communist countires. As I mentioned before, I couldn't hate communism more, but I do have some sort of morbid curiosity of it. I really like reading about dictators and the histroy of former communist states. I find it interesting how a whole country can rally around one authority figure. It is really interesting to me what kinds of things pull a country into such a form of government and what kinds of things pull it out. I use to think a country like America could never under any circumstances fall into such a position, but as the years move on I am more and more convinced that it is a very real possibility.

Yes, it is obscene. The best response is to ignore those people. If they even attempt to discuss politics with you by wearing something with those faces on it, you simply point out what that person did and then ask them if they were aware of that. If they weren't, maybe you just educated them. If they were and they're still wearing the shirt, it's safe to ignore everything else they're saying.

You could also get a shirt that has their picture with a big anti sign through it. There's a website that sells conservative shirts that has one like that for Che Guerra. If I was going to wear a shirt with his picture on it, that would be the one.

Sean, I don't know if you're still wearing the watch, but you could easily tell the person that gave it to you "I appreciate the gift, but I can't wear this knowing what this guy has done." That is, assuming, you don't want to look like "one of those people".

It is weird isn't it, these "dictator watches". And everyone accepts it apparently. Imagine what would happen if Germans start selling Hitler watches as souvenirs.
