Certificate from Bush

My Grandma and Grandpa are celebrating their 50th Anniversary this year. Today, they got a letter that said it came from the White House. They thought it was a joke, but they opened it up and found it was a congradulations from President Bush and his wife. They'll send me a copy and maybe I'll sell it for a couple thousand dollars.

Now I get a warm, fuzzy feeling whenever I think of the most hated president of all time.

Just don't let those gays get married or it'll render those 50 beautiful years of marriage completely pointless and irrelevant. I can't think of a faster way to erase 50 years of shared love, family building and spiritual growth than to have two complete strangers in another state make a similar commitment to each other when they're of the same sex.

I am fluent in over six million forms of procrastination.

Ric you may not be aware, but no everyone in my country agrees with Bush's stance on homosexuality.

I myself see nothing wrong with letting homosexuals do what they want.

I don't know. Sure, they MUST have the freedom to do whatever they want in their own homes...

But calling it marriage would be like letting a porn star be a priest (no snide comments, just an example. If there ARE any porn star priests out there, I don't want or need to know. Unless he's in my area.)

I'm almost on the fence on this one actually.

I agree with you Warbler because people are entitled to be able to do what they want and be happy (as long as it isn't at someone's expense). Not to mention the end of the population crisis!

-BUT-

If you think about it, everything about gay marriage seems wrong... For instance, biologically we are meant to mate with the opposite sex and have offspring. All mammals do this....except us.

Eventually the word "natural" won't mean a damn thing and that would be kind of ...bad.

Well, this is more for the politics thread but...

If a gay couple are truly in love and want to live together in a monogomous relationship, why shouldn't they be allowed to make that relationship official and be granted the legal rights and benefits of marriage?

And if a porn star decided to change his ways and become a priest, that should be ok too.

Okay, let the homosexuals marry, but I want at least 3 wives. I mean why should I stop at one? But the stupid law doesn't allow multiple wives. I think anybody should be able to marry anyone or anything and as many anyones or anythings as they want nomatter what gender or age the anyone or anything is.

That's not what I meant. I'm talking about an ACTIVE porn star who also is a priest.

So if someone wanted to marry your 6-year-old daughter and have children with her.......you would be totally ok with that?

I'm gald to see you guys agree with me. For those who don't agree, please try and put yourself in a gay person's shoes - for whatever reason you are attracted to people of the same sex as yourself. You don't know why, you don't neccesarily want to be, society says you shouldn't be. It's probably very scary, frustrating and confusing. Luckily, in the modern world, we have begun to accept that these people do exist, and to a large extent *most* of us are happy to let them get on with it. But imagine that you are one of these people, and you have a partner, and you are trying to lead as normal a life as possible together. But that partner is not legally recognised as your partner. He or she has no say in what happens should you die and they are not able to collect any life insurance. There are also certain tax breaks etc that married couples are entitled to. Or, taking my life as an example - I met and fell in love with an American. We got married and after filling in lots of paperwork and paying lots of fees, I was granted permission to come and live here. If I was gay and she was a man, this would not be allowed, and we would be seperated by the atlantic, which would suck. I can't think of any more examples right now but hopefully you see my point. I understand that people don't want the sanctity of marriage to be tainted, but I don't believe that gay people who legitamately wish to be legally bound should be denied that right. Gay marriage was legalised in England last year, and it didn't cause the unravelling of society.

And for those who oppose gay marriage (or homosexuality in general) on religion grounds, I thought the church and the state were supposed to remain seperate (a very wise decision IMO). I recently learnt that there have only ever been 27 amendments made to the constitution, and these were for important and worthwhile reasons that arose as America developed and grew and realised that the existing constitution needed to change: I'm talking about things like ending Slavery and giving women the vote. But should gay marriage be banned? Do we really need to abuse the constitution in this way, to actually BAN something that would benefit many and hurt few? You may not agree with it, but do we really need to go so far as AMENDING THE CONSTITUTION!? Of course not. George Bush and the republicans are playing the gay card to appeal to right wing christian voters, and in doing so they are *almost* breaking the church/state division. If anything should be constitutionally banned, it should be exploitation of voters in this way.

P.S. Back on topic - I recieved a letter from Tony Blair because I wrote to him about dropping the debt owed to England and other countries by the third world. He replied with a 3 page letter outling exactly what he planned to do at the G8 summit to try and convince other World leaders to join him in dropping the debt. Unfortunately. London was attacked by terrorists during the G8 summit, which meant Tony Blair had to leave early and media attention was taken away from the summit.

The letter was no doubt written by his secretary or assistant, but it's possible Mr.Blair dictated it. At any rate, he signed it.

War does not make one great.

Just to play Devil’s Advocate for a moment everyone does have the same rights. I’m a heterosexual male and I can marry a female, but not a male. Were I a homosexual male I could also marry a female, but not a male.

I agree wholeheartedly, which raises the question; why is the government involved in a religious ceremony (marriage) to begin with?

I believe that every American has the right (meaning ability not entitlement) to pursue life, liberty and happiness so long as it does not infringe on another American’s life, liberty or happiness.

I really don’t care if you get off on hooking your nuts up to a car battery I just want you to keep it in an appropriate venue. That’s where the gay community messes things up; they draw attention to their orientation. I’m not talking about the marriage thing I’m talking about “Gay Night” at the Ball Park. I just think it’s inappropriate to have sexual orientation based events and discounts in a very public display. I like blow jobs and I know many other men that do as well (straight and gay for that matter), so should we have a “Guys that like blow-jobs night” at the ball park? The answer is no. In a public venue, frequented by families, it is inappropriate to make any sexual references. Why should you have to tell your three year old what a blow-job is just because me and my buddies are happy we’re getting them?

I also agree about the marriage amendment. There should be no amendments that RESTRICT rights. We’ve tried that before (Volstead Act) and all it did was cause an increase in organized crime and help the Canadian liquor industry. Same Sex Marriage only an issue because the mid-term elections are coming and the Republicans want to stir up their base. Still we should remember that both parties pull this shit all the time. The Democrats said there would be a draft by summer 2005 if Bush was reelected so where’s the draft?

As for the “sanctity” of marriage, heterosexuals screwed that up in America years ago. How can one talk about gays ruining the sanctity of marriage when the heterosexual divorce rate sits at 50%?

Back on topic:

50 years is great and the certificate is nice, but I’m sure IS’s grandparents have connections that are much deeper and more meaningful than any piece of paper.
