Perhaps Mr. Guinness just had a very dry sense of humour (as would be properly English) and it's just going over everyone's head?

Keep Circulating the Tapes.

I don't see any of this as Alec being an ass. I think all of these little stories are very funny!

I don't think anyone here thinks he was being an ass? I think the stories are funny, too, but I rarely see any stories where he has something positive to say about SW or SW fans.

(from Wikipedia)

Upon his first viewing of the film, Guinness wrote in his diary:

"It's a pretty staggering film as spectacle and technically brilliant. Exciting, very noisy and warm-hearted. The battle scenes at the end go on for five minutes too long, I feel, and some of the dialogue is excruciating and much of it is lost in noise, but it remains a vivid experience."

I wish that I could just wish my feelings away...but I can't.  Wishful wishing can only lead to wishes wished for in futile wishfulness, which is not what I wish to wish for.

I don't get it. Which lines in the dialogue are excruciating to him, in particular?

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

If you took five minutes out of the battle at the end it would be practically non-existent.

All you would have would be the trench runs which would have screwed up the pacing no end.

I wonder if he liked The Dam Busters or 633 Squadron (the battle is basically lifted from those movies).

I imagine he hated all the USC Orientalism (he converted to Catholicism so maybe mysticism without God was a bit distasteful for him).

I read a story in Empire magazine when TPM came out about how Alec Guiness, after being approached by a young fan, boasting he'd seen star wars over 100 times, told to said fan to promise him one thing - never watch star wars again.

I think I read somewhere that he also suggested to the child's mother that she get him professional help. :-P

I've heard the story about the 20-pound note before and it struck me as funny. I have a feeling it was done in jest.

Man, that's a sad story.  I've heard a number of things about Alec Guinness that don't really paint him in a flattering light, and this doesn't help.

I agree. It's unfortunate that it clashes so much with the personality of the character he plays in the OT.

I was equally gutted to find out he wasn't a criminal when I
