Cannot find old Anime topic thread...

I couldn't find the anime thread that was started, but I wanted to let you guys know about something.

I posted once or twice in that thread, asking about a movie I'd seen when I was really little (6-8 years old maybe). Big pillbugs and a little girl or something.

Not that many of you would care, but I think I figured out what it was. Last night I was watching Adult Swim on Cartoon Network, when I saw a commercial for a movie coming to DVD. I thought it looked vaguely familiar, then I saw one of the big pillbug things.

The movie is called Kaze no tani no Naushika, being sold in the US as Nausicaä of the Valley of the Winds. It was made in 1984 and would have been shown here before as Warriors of the Wind.

Does that name ring a bell to anyone?

I've seen the new preview you've mentioned, but I know nothing else. You might dig up the Cartoons thread for this, since it techinally is a cartoon. We've been talking mostly about anime and superhero cartoons there anyway.

It does ring a bell. Nice anime by Gighli studio - the producers of "Grave of the Fireflies", which I also recomend.

All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. Is that the original title ric?

No, it's "Hotaru no Haka", but you'll only find it under the english title, which is the international title.

Anime films I recomend:

"Grave of the Fireflies", "Barefoot Gen": You MUST see these two if you want to be a real otaku, but I must warn you, it's a one way ticket to depressionville. "Grave..." is the only movie that really made me cry.

"End of Evangelion" and "Cowboy Bebop - Knocnking on Heavens Door", but do watch their respective series first

"My Neighbor Totoro", "Porco Rosso", "Nausicaa", "Spirited Away" - from Ghibli Studios (not sure if Porco Rosso is).

"Wings of Honeamise", "Otaku no Video" (not sure of the american or japanese title) - early ones from Gainax, must-see.

"Akira" and "Ghost in the Shell", obviously. Maybe "Steamboy".

Osamu Tezuka's Phoenix saga movies, Osamu Tezuka's Metropolis.

If you WANT stick to convencional, popular animes, try the "Bardock TV special" from DBZ (the only thing from DBZ universe that's really worth watching), the Naruto film, the Rurouni Kenshin movie, maaaaybe one of the "Saint Seiya" movies...

The Dub of the Bardock Special really sucks, so find it subtitled if at all possible.

DBZ Movies 7 and 9 are pretty good watches if you know the characters, but again, the Dub for movie seven is really bad. Movie nine has a decent dub. Funimation acts like DBZ's only audience is 5-year-olds, so don't excpect much. (And remember never to call Hollywood seque-crazy...)

Also the first three that were released by Pioneer rather than Funimation have much better dubs in their uncut versions, though they are a little dull, no fault of America.

Also, avoid anything dubbed by 4Kids (Pokemon!... Yeah...)

Chaltab I think you should watch this one, so you know what the "grave of the fireflies" mean. I'm kinda curious about what would your review be, although... nevermind I think I know what you would say.

I was just making a smartalec remark. I'm not dissing the anime.

I looked it up on IMDb, and it seems like something I wouldn't like... I prefer something more upbeat.

What he says about everything else?

I've been putting off seeing Akira for a while, I'm definitely going to see if I can find that as well.

No offense, but you do seem cynical and narrow-minded about alot of things on this board

Cynical, maybe, but how have I been narrowminded?

Heck, I even like the prequels and the SE more than most of you do!

Chill out dude I was just teasing ya.

Well if you prefer something more upbeat, then avoid it like the plague...

Actually, that's one of the reasons I normally dont' get into many anime. So much of it is downbeat or just plain weird to my sensibilities. (Wolf Rain qualifies as both)

Well... except for the mindless kid garbage like Yugioh.

* sudenly, a flashback of beating up an yu-gi-oh cardboard character appears *

Ok Chaltab so I recomend "My neighbor Totoro", it was produced at the same time as Grave of The Fireflies and was intended to be shown after it ("grave..." is so depressing they needed a more positive, happy anime so that audienced wouldn't feel so bad after it).

When I get some money and a decent video store, I might check it out. Right now I'm just trying to find a friggin' uncut copy of DBZ movie 8 that I don't have to pay 25 dollars for.

In the mean time, I'll get the first part of a foreign language song stuck in your head..
DAN DAN Kokolo Hitareteku... Hold your hand...

What is movie 8? The one with Brolly, Mr Satan and that acid thing that eats up everything?

"DAN DAN" is the opening song for DB-GT, right? As bad as that series can be, the songs are great.

Movie 8 is the first one with Broly; I was unaware of anything related to acid, though. I'm mostly just looking for the uncut DVD so I can watch it in Japanese.

And as far as I know, Dan Dan was the ending theme for DragonBall or DBZ. I've only heared it at the end of the "Path to Being the Strongest" DVD--the movie made to celebrate ten years since Dragonball was released.

And I have no idea what the Japanese opening theme for DBGT was.

EDIT: I searched the internet, and appearantly Dan Dan was used as the theme for DBGT.

There's this movie, I belive it's Brolly second or third, in which he is somewhat cloned, and Mr Satan, Trunks and Gothen and trapped in an island with this scientist who cloned it, and they have this acid that burns and eats up everything, and it gets lose... It's not a bad dbz movie. I thought it was #8.

I'm pretty sure DAN DAN is DB-GT opening theme.

Yeah, it is. The movie with the acid then is number 11. Eight is Broly, nine is the one with "Bojack" and 10 has Broly inexplicably return in a Saiyan spacepod and die from a Son Family Kamehameha. I don't even care to see those.

I'm looking forward to that one too. I managed to find the Broly DVD over the weekend..

I must admit I'm a bit under-impressed. Especially by the dub, which has some of the best dialogue/acting Funimation has ever done, but insissts on filling the quite moments with heavy metal that doesn't fit the action onscreen at all.
