YIYF, you don't need to get packages from home. Just eat Canadian chocolate! It's better than its American counterpart (as most Canadian sweets are), and cheaper, too. And it's really close (especially to North Dakota)

OK Sybe, while I'm in ND I will surely take your advice, but I don't intend on being there very long so when I hit California I'm gonna have to find a Englsih import store so I can get my Chocolate, Cheddar Cheese, Tea-bags and Heinz baked beans.

War does not make one great.

Let me tell you something. American's don't know s**t about chocolate. Hersheys SUCKS. As a result, your Twixs suck, your snickers suck, even your mini eggs suck compared to English versions. Cadburys chocolate rules, and don't even get me started on Galaxy chocolate because if you tasted that your head would explode. I gave some to a friend of mine in LA and he actually used the word 'orgasmic'. Man, I'm gonna miss that stuff. I no longer drink, smoke, or take drugs, but chocolate is my one vice, and I can't satisfy my needs with crappy Hersheys.

Looks like I'm gonna be getting my Mum to send me packages regularly.

Hey YIYF...a Cadbury-Schweppes factory used to be about a mile from my house before it was bought out by Hershey's. They make the Peter-Paul/Mounds candy bars. Now I tell my kids Willy Wonka lives there...

Actually, I know Hershey is very run-of-the-mill. I'm not big on chocolate in the first place, but if I do buy it, I get Godiva or Lindt.

Really? I've never found Godiva chocolates to be all that special. I'd rather Ganong (but maybe that's the Canadian content kicking in) or Chocolates by Bernard Callebaut (local)

Good to know, Dayv. Good to know.

Blow their minds with Ganong, if you want my advice.

Russell Stover's chocolate is pretty good, and so is Dove.

As far as American chocolate goes, Nestle PWNS Hershey.
Dove I think is owned by Galaxy - their logo and packaging is the same - but Galaxy tastes better. As for Nestle, yeah, they rule, but again, teh European Nestle is better. Not sure what it is about America, they have lots of great food and they know how to indulge, but they just can't get chocolate right. The same goes for cheese - unless you go to Whole Foods or a health store type place, you can't get proper cheese - it's all that processed plastic bright yellow shit.

I actually found some Wendsleydale cheese at my local market the other day!

Hehe

This is beginning to sound like a British ex-pats thread.

Gotta chip in my 2-cents worth as another ex-pat Brit in the US.

Yes, British chocolate is the best. Like someone said earlier, American chocolate is just wrong. My wife couldn't believe the difference between US and UK equivalents of chocolate bars (KitKat, Twix, Snickers (Marathon etc). There is no comparison. She won't touch anything Hersheys now.

Strangely, the Creme Eggs around here this year were actually made in the UK. Proper ones However, the mini-eggs are the Hershey-licensed crap which disappoints me to no end. Mini-eggs rule.

Luckily for me, there are a couple of 'British' stores around me so I have access to most things I miss, albeit at a cost.

And as 'Yoda Is Your Father' said, cheese is the other thing I think Americans have no clue about. Sharp cheddar ! Um, what exactly is meant by sharp. A little more 'no-flavor' than mild cheddar. I'll take a mature UK cheddar any day of the week. Again, I can get hold of a pretty large selection of cheeses from the UK and Europe where I am, so I'll consider myself fortunate on that front. Now where's my jar of Branston...
where have i been all this time ?

I love Canada. The convenience of America with the traditions of Europe. Our food rules. Poutine for everyone!

I had friends from Canada who moved to Mississippi. Three years later they returned to Canada.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

I've been to select cities in the States. Washington, Oklahoma City, and NYC. Oh, and upstate New York. Then I came home and ate poutine.

Jelly beans are good.

Some of my weaknesses -

1) Baby Ruth
2) Twix
3) Snickers
4) Reece's Pieces Peanut Butter cups
5) Nestle's Crunch bars
6) M&M's
7) Skittles

Skittles, however, can only be eaten in conjunction with a fruit flavored beverage like Sprite or perhaps more appropriately an actual fruit juice (same goes for Star Bursts).
I'd like a qui-gon jinn please with an Obi-Wan to go.

The advantage of Butterfingers is that you don't have to taste the chocolate, it's mostly good for the butterfingery goodness inside...mmmmmm
