Can we send an O-OT representative to a SW convention?

Is there anyway we could find out when Rick McCallum or some Lucasfilm higher up will be at one of the upcoming SW conventions, and ask them one simple quesiton:

Will you ever release the O-OT on DVD?

If yes, then when?

Does Lucas understand there is a whole webpage dedicated it?

Does he understand he is alienating a whole base of older fans who now disdain him for his changes to the OT?

Does he realize the money they can make off of a release to O-OT?

There has to be someone to represent our plight at each convention, and if we continue to hammer the point, maybe someone will start listening

Lucas doesn't want to release the O-OT on DVD because it isn't his "original vision", but I think he is just afraid that the O-OT wouldn't sell well.

The weird part is: Spielberg released both the Original and the new version with his "E.T." special edition DVD. Why didn't Lucas do likewise?

If the changes are indeed "improvements" to what was originally possible (as they are in his mind), then comparing it side-by-side with the original would only serve as a testament to the "wonders" he has performed with it. Right? Why does he feel so threatened?

In my personal opinion the reason for not releasing the original cuts lies in the differences he had during the creative process of the old films. Somehow he feels there's not enough of his "personal handwriting" in the films. That seems to be the case especially with the first film of the classic trilogy, whose production seemed to have cost him the most nerves. If there'd be a low-cost way to have the "sadly misled fans" get their "old and 'incomplete' movie trilogy", yet preventing that any new and 'unspoiled' fan gets his hands on them, he'd probably do it.

In a way he's already doing that by not interfering with community efforts to restore the classic trilogy in it's original form. I would not be surprised if he'd call them "fan edits" at some point in time.

Yeah. Like I said in another thread, one thing you have to give him credit for is allowing the creation and distribution of fan preservations, edits, and films that freely use his copyrighted material. I believe at one point he even said he was interested in seeing The Phantom Edit and was planning to watch the fanfilm Star Wars: Revelations.

I've been thinking about this topic since I joined this site, and I have come up with what I believe is the most logical explanation of this debacle. Lucas basically struck gold by sheer chance with ANH, mostly due to the time period it was released. In a time of moral and ethical confusion, it served as a ray of hope for many. Of course, due to the film's massive success, sequels were produced and the rest was history. Fast foward to the early/mid 1990's: Star Wars had lost much of its former draw, mainly due to lack of new material. Games were popular such as TIE Fighter, Rebel Assault, etc, but the franchise as a whole was losing momentum. As a result of this, the concept of creating the SE versions is realized, as evidenced by the sticker on the '95 Faces LD set that read "The last chance to own the original versions". This whole marketing ploy was obviously conceived of many years before the SE versions actually premiered. In 1997, the SE versions were released, which reintroduced a whole new audience to the films, and served as the segueway into the prequels, the first of which debuted 2 years afterwards. Lucas explained away the numerous alterations as being "closer to his original vision". While I believe this statement contains some truth to it, it seems more like an excuse than a real explanation. Many of the changes made do not serve to add anything to the movies and in most cases, detract from them. Most of the alterations are seemingly abitrary, and could have easily been accomplished when the films were originally produced. I believe that most of the reason the films were altered and the originals buried was literally to create controversy surrounding it. Lucas is a better marketer than he is a filmmaker, and knows that his refusal to even acknowledge the issue beyond the trite answers already given is what keeps interest in the films alive. If it were not for these changes, this site and others like it would not exist. Why else would LFL/FOX ignore all the fan edits and bootlegs, and sites like this that enable their creation? It's free advertising! By forcing people to accept a revised version instead of offering a choice, he leaves himself more options to resell the films over and over again to the public. Lucas knows his franchise has a finite life span, and will do anything to keep people's attention focused on it. I believe the originals will eventually be released at some point, but only time will tell. This is only a theory, but it seems to be the most logical explanation of how someone who decries other people's films being altered can be so hypocritical and closed minded when it comes to his own work.

Excellent insight TR47. I've assumed something similar. I used to believe that the SEs were pushed by Fox as they thought it wouldn't live up to stuff like Independence Day. Sort of an old becomes new thing. The SE may truly be a marketing gimmick.

either way you look at it lucas has become an arrogant fuck, hes not the same lucas i used to love and adore. btw i dont get why no one has asked these questions either to lucas, mccallum or their representatives, we cant be the only ones who like the oot can we?

InfoDroid really summed it up well. I think Lucas is afraid that people would find the original films better than the "improved" ones. With all the rumors about future changes, maybe he doesn't want to release the originals at least until he considers the movies finished. As a marketer, his worst fear has got to be realeasing the originals would make a lot of people completely satisfied and feel no need for his newest version. Still, he could make a lot more money releasing the originals, even if they were only available with the special editions.
