Silicon Valley, Alcatraz, Hollywood and there's a really nice restaurant by the fish market in SF. There's tons to do there.
I'm taking my first trip to California, for the most part sticking to the coast between LA and SF. Any recommendations on things to do or see?

Hey all right, I was born in SF and have lived in the Bay Area my whole life.
You definitely got to check out the SF beach, great place for bonfires. Also take a visit to the Haight-Ashbury, Golden Gate Park (bigger than NYC's Central Park), the Chinatown/North Beach neighborhoods (including the Church of Scientology right across the street from the Transamerica Pyramid) and of course the Golden Gate Bridge. And you might as well check out the Castro district, just to see if it's as crazy as the internet say it is (seriously though, the Castro Theater is frickin beautiful and plays great movies).

Oh my, I've got to go to that theater -- especially if it's film projection.
Just drive around for a week listening to this.
JEDIT: We just discovered the woman who voiced Jem was in Luna for their last few years. WTF?

Thank you for the recommendations.
A California soundtrack is a good idea...

Don't comment on my taste in music.
I went to California years ago on a family vacation when I was a kid. I don't know if it is still there but in San Francisco, there was this restaurant called The House Of Prime Rib. If you love Prime Rib like I do, go there. Also don't try to go from San Francisco to Disney Land in one day, much too long a trip. See Yosemite National Park. See the Sequoias(very, very, very big trees).
Definitely want to see the Sequoias. Will look into that restaurant.

That's the sum of my California based music reccomendations... although the second does start with the line "F**k California" so probably not what you are after.

Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk: one of the last great oceanside amusement parks. If you're looking for some good food in that area, try Phil's Fish Market in Moss Landing (local favorite/hole in the wall but featured on Throwdown with Bobby Flay) or any of a number of restaurants at Capitola Beach (great place to walk around/people watch). Monterrey and Carmel are also really nice, Monterrey Bay Aquarium is one of the finest in the world.
I have plenty more recommendations for the San Francisco/Silicon Valley/Monterrey area if you'd like them. And it would help to know what you would like to do.
I also have (less) knowledge about the LA area.
