Burning Dual-Layer Discs For The First Time

Author

Okay, I have never burned DL DVD's before, so I want to know if there is anything different I need to do from single layer discs.

Here is my situation:
- Nero 7 Premium
- Lite-On DL DVD-RW Burner
- Verbatim DL discs

Example:
Suppose hypothetically that I am about burn, say, ADM's Harry Potter 4 Extended Edition. It is a 6.94 GB DVD. Can I just pop my blank disc in, add the Video_TS folder to the compilation in Nero, and be good to go? Or do I need to do something extra?

Cripes - I didn't even check the DVD-ROM folder. Thanks as always!

Okay, so I F'd up.

On the first DL DVD I burned, I did not set Layer 0's sectors at the correct number, resulting in a bad, rough layer break. The movie plays fine up until the layer break, but then it becomes pixelated and the sound sketches out while the player finds the resume point.

I already deleted the VOB files and everything else from my original source.

Is there a way to rip the DVD again and reburn it, putting in the correct layer break information? Or in my hastiness did I corrupt my DVD files and their architecture and now need to download the 7 GB torrent all over again in order to get a good, seamlessly-playing DVD out of this?

I am not very familiar with PgcEdit and its capabilities, so I am reluctant to go playing around with it without advance knowledge of what I am doing.

Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem.

now that people "know" how to figure out those brake points - how about sharing them with the rest of us!

Here is the guide that I used - it seems complicated at first, but it works perfectly. And, the guide is a little old, so here's the deal - the newer version of PgcEdit works fine with ImgBurn now; in fact, ImgTool Classic does NOT work with PgcEdit anymore. So, essentially, just replace ImgTool Classic with ImgBurn everywhere that appears. This worked fine for me.

Yeah, just make sure that you set the layer 0 sector number correctly. Since it was incorrect, I was unable to re-rip from the DVD for a correct reburn. So, whenever you do your burn, just make sure that is correct.

One other thing - following the guide, I never saw the blue, yellow, etc. lines "advising" which sector is best for a break - I just kept highlighted the sectors that were first highlighted when I clicked to that screen, and it worked fine.

I have burned 5 dl discs and have 4 coasters. I have folled all the guides for pgcedit and imgburn, I have the latest firmware for my (sony) burner, and I have always bought verbatim DL discs. I tried ADM HP1 twice, and both failed. I tried ADM HP4 twice and failed, and I just burned ADM T3, and it told me that it failed, but it seems to have worked OK. Not sure what I'm doing wrong here. I have noticed that every time I try to open a disc, pgc gives me a warning window that says:

Any clue as to what I'm supposed to enter here?

After I click yes or no, I get this screen:

http://img144.imageshack.us/img144/175/pgc2tb7.jpg

I don't see this in the guide anywhere, and I'm only 70% sure of what I'm supposed to do here.

Also, the pgcedit how-to guide tells me that after I load my first DVD that:

"(ii) The first time you burn from PgcEdit, the following setup screen will appear."

, and it shows this menu that I'm supposed to edit. I have never seen this menu, nor can I find it. I've tried restarting, resetting, and re-downloading with no luck. Any idea where I can set this stuff up?

Whenever it comes time to select the layer break, I have yet to see a title that gives me a green, blue, yellow, or pink position, and I just end up previewing the breaks and make an educated guess.

http://img184.imageshack.us/img184/922/pgc3vp6.jpg

I have made it through pgcedit, being about 80% sure that i created a proper ISO, but when I open up IMGburn, it just seems to go downhill from there with most
of my burns failing at 50% or less.

Can anyone PLEASE help me, before I kill something?

And here is the error from my 5th failed disc. $10 isn't too bad for a nice set of coasters, is it?

I've just dumped the files onto Nero, and have had nary a problem.

Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here, this is the war room!

Nero burns them just fine, but it moves the layer break to wherever it damn well pleases.

Is there an OS X solution? I use ImgBurn on Windows, but I'd like to be able to do it on OS X.

Time is running out for the Rebels. Antilles upcourt to Skywalker. He’s being paced by Darth Va— the bone-jarring pick by Solo! He came out of nowhere! Skywalker’s open from way outside, he launches at the buzzer... Good! It’s good! The Rebels win on a sensational buzzer beater by Luke Skywalker! Let’s take another look at that last shot. He just does get it off in time. Wow, what a shot. That’s why they call him Luke Legend.

That may be the most exciting battle I have ever been privileged to broadcast. Certainly the most dramatic finish. We’ll get you an update on the Artoo Detoo injury situation in just a moment. Right now let’s go courtside where SuperShadow is waiting with Chewbacca.

reave,

pgcEdit: Options > Input/Output > Burn / Create ISO setup
will get you the burn setup screen.

I always cancel out of the Find BOVs window, since I'm not editing anything just making an ISO + layer break. I've never had that Verify... window but I'd try both and see how the ISO played via Daemon Tools or Alcohol 120%.

I've only ever seen a blue layer break twice, I normally pick one of the offered chapter breaks that has quiet audio or where a slight pause would not be too noticable. pgcEdit flags the chapter (cell) as seamless so modern players should play back with no pause.

Also, check your burner is up to burning DL, I upgraded an old LG to a cheap new Pioneer and went from 50/50 to 100% good burns.

Wow. A year later and I still can't burn any f*%#$ng DL discs. Everything runs smoothly, I make it through Pgcedit, imgburn takes over, burns the disc, and then tries to finalize and sh*#s out on me. I have a good burner, good discs and good files. WHAT THE F#@*!?!?!

Sorry about my outburst, I'm just a little exasperated. Are there any other ways to do this? Do I need a mds file? I've tried to burn ADM T1 extended about 6 times now, and I'm about to just say screw it and shrink it down (boy, won't that look great on my projector).

Do you still have the same burner? Did you update it's firmware?

Does the problem still occur with the latest version of ImgBurn? The latest version has a lot of changes and fixes.

Do you get the same error when you do a test burn (simulation)?

Also, do you use the setting "when saving leave at least 32k between ifo and bup"?

Do you use the seamless layerbreak option when selecting the layerbrake just before burning?

I've only had one error with ImgBurn. I couldn't burn a certain .ISO but I got the error before the actual burning started so I didn't loose any discs. Eventually I gave up. It must be so frustrating burning a discs and having an error pop up during finalizing. It would drive me nuts too.

If nothing else works I would buy a new burner I guess.

Well, I tried it a different way and it worked the first time. Thanks to everyone who has steered me through this. God, for a technology that is so old, you'd think it would be easy by now.

If anyone else is having trouble, here is the guide that I used that finally worked for me. Someone else told me that I just needed to use ImgBurn by itself, but I couldn't figure out how to do it. This explains it perfectly:
Burnin', burnin', burnin'....DL!

Yes, ImgBurn is the only program you need to burn dual-layer DVDs.

Initially I had about a 50% success rate, using Aone DVD+R 8X Dual Layer (RICOHJPND01). I'm too cheap to buy Verbatim, and since Verbs are more than twice the price of these discs even with 50% failed burns it works out cheaper in the long run. After flashing the firmware of the burner the success rate was 100%.

One thing to watch out for though; I've seen reports that if ImgBurn notices an error with the VTS sectors in your IFO files, it will fix them when it builds the image - without telling you. This means that the IFO/BUP files aon your disc will be slightly different to your original. While you could argue that fixing errors is good, it's bad if, for example, you want to re-seed a torrent and have deleted the original files. The files stored on the disc will have slightly different checksums so your torrent won't be 100%, and you won't be able to be a seed.

Of course if the person who originally authored the DVD did it correctly in the first place, this problem would not occur.

I now copy original IFO/BUP files into a DVD_ROM sub-folder (space allowing) and burn. At least you can get all the original files back and reseed.
Assuming VOB/IFO files were torrented and not an iso.

Does anyone have a recommendation for DL discs? I've only used Fujifilm, but have had pretty good success (no bad burns in 20 some-odd discs). However, Fuji discs seem to be hard to come by these days. how about Verbatim?

Memorex comes in 3-packsfor about $10, but from my experience they don't seem to play too well.
Also, for people who just want raw VTS files and to forget the extra folders like jacket_p or dvd-rom, DVDshrink works when you turn off the compression.

I've had much better luck with Verbatim than any brand. Fujifilm failed for me about 30-40% of the time. Never had any luck with Memorex. I had to return a 20 pack because I had made 10 coasters out of 11 tries.

I can finally burn DL discs with NO problems now. In the end the solution was to use the right DVD burner. I had stuck with Sony forever, but I am now convinced that the Pioneer 115D is the way to go. Dark Jedi pointed me towards this model, and it is absolutely the best burner that I have ever had! Best of all, I picked it up for $40 on ebay.

If you are having problems with burning DL discs, and it doesn't seem to be your software choices/setup, I would highly recommend picking up this burner.

Yes, the pioneer burners are very good. I've used them since the 102 model. I know have a 111 and a 112 in my pc (and I previously had the 102, 104, 106, 110, 111 and 112. I have burned hundreds of single layer discs and close to a hundred dual layers discs and I have never had a coaster. But I'm only using my pioneers in combination with ImgBurn and verbatim media.

That seems to be the perfect combo. I've finally been able to break my Sony addiction.
