I've recieved some messages confused on what is going on in Brazil right now, some of those by ot.com members, so I belive I can post here just to inform you what is going on.

There's this criminal faction, which I wishi NOT to name as I won't give them the pleasure of being identified on an international forum, that controls all prisons and most of the criminals on the state I live in, São Paulo. They have started a massive attack over all the state. All prisons rebelled and captured hostages. Hundreds of police offices have been murdered. The police force, absolutely unprepared and with NO proper fundings or trainning, has vanished. Those criminals infiltrated the police, the politics, the government, and allowed them to organize crime through jail. Buses have been set of fire. Banks destroyed. What is happening right now, on virtually every city, is a FULL BLOWN VIOLENT ANARCHY. The army might get involved, but I don't see what can be done. The whole thing has grown out of proportions. The news you are getting on the TV and newspapers, it's not even 1% of what is going on. I don't know for how long we'll be able to keep on.

All this happened because this shame excuse for a country has allowed crime to rise into barbaric numbers, with absolutely no funding on education, care or police forces. There is a huge amount of people living on total pooverty, and those people migrated to crime. I've seen kids young as 8 playing on the street saying how cool it is to be a murder or a robber... It's a long story, I could go on and on, but the thing is, I fucking HATE this country, I HATE it's people, there's nothing I can do, and I can only hope I'll be here tomorrow.

I don't work or live at the capital anymore, but the situation there is of absolutely anarchy. No public transport. Cars and busses burning. Riots. Gun firing at every place. The business have closed. The phone lines are jammed because people are calling their relatives to see if they are alive.

Our last hope is for the governor to approve martial law, as it has happened back in October 1992, when the special tactis force was allowed to kill every single prisoner on the capital's major prison. The special taticts said that, if allowed to do it, they promise to end this in less than 2 hours.

So, my request for all of those reading. Do NOT invest your money in Brazil. If you wanna build a factory go to Mexico, if you wanna technology workforce go for India, or invest in China. Do NOT travel to Brazil. At all. Go somewhere else, to to the Caribean, go to Europe, or Africa.

I'll keep you informed as things progress.

I thought of a good, yet silly, paralel with the things going on here. Remember on Ghostbusters when they released all those ghosts around NY and it was like chaos. Kinda like that, but with criminals, but over the whole country, in an anarchy and war environment. Business are closed, people are been asked to leave their jobs and stay at home to protect their families. Transport is chaotic, communications are chaotic. I've heard on the radio that the army will move into action, it is now legally a war state over the country. Like Iraq now, but the body count is way higher here than on Iraq, and with no police forces acting at all.

I am currently working AT home (for the following weeks as they are finishing a new building we will move into) and have no intention to go out. I don't have much food stocked but I can drive easily to where I worked, less than a mile away, and get some stuff there, I belive by the morning is safer. My dad called, he was leaving his office. I have no news about my brother, he's at college and the college he's in was attacked by people with machine guns, but if my parents didnt say anything, I'm sure he is OK.

Ric, I can only hope that martial law is approved ASAP. Are you living in an area that is potentially dangerous for you, or are you at a safe distance?

Just an area, around the state and some other locations. An area half the size of Texas.

I do live 4 miles away from a major prison where they are still keeping one hostage, they released all the others. Around the area I am some buses have been burned, a bank agency was destroyed. My parents are worried, but I am not. I'm not afraid, actually.

I don't think nailing the doors is gonna do any good. So far they have no entered people's homes, and I doubt they will.

I do belive this will be over in a week or so, from what I've been hearing.

I gotta go out tomorrow, buy some food and water, but I'll be ok.

So the prisoners aren't interested in civilians?

Man I'd be worried anyway, too bad you don't keep a gun at your house....or do you?

They are not interested in civillians, but in causing chaos and havoc. The thing started because one of the leaders was transfered from a maximum security prison as he was discovered, and they started a whole terrorist act to promote chaos and panic througout the state.

I do not own a gun and don't want to, even on this situation.

I've heard that all prisons were taken into control of the police forces and all the hostages were rescued. This is a major step foward. Let's see what they can do to control the rioting, looting and violence on streets.

man thats crasy, whats the world coming from, this is the second country which i thought to be pretty stable that has broken into a state of chaos. the first being france. this sounds alot worse then that though.

Things are pretty much in control at the capital. The police force is doing one heck of a job there and was able to control all the riots. Some people are still afraid of going out though. Over here, things are still kinda messy, but I am not afraid. I'm going to leave my home at the afternoon and at night as I have to.

Things got in control way faster than I thought it would. In two or three days everything's back to normal.

That's good. Whoever caused and/or allowed things to get so out of hand should be arrested and sent to rot in jail for the next fifty years.

I'm glad to hear things are cooling down. This, unfortunately, reminds me of the time I worked at summer camp. About two-thirds of the staff were from Europe, one of whom was a guy from Yugoslavia. A few days after he arrived at camp in California, the huge civil war in Yugoslovia broke out. He was so[/o] worried about all the family and friends he had left behind. I felt really bad for the guy.

Must be pretty tough...

OK things here are better, I've been out twice today, have not seen anything unusual, although there were few cars out there at night - at day it was normal. What I feel is that people are just... colder. Distant. Not smiling at all. Like when you get some terrible bad news and nothing seems too much fun.

The violence has stopped because the government has done a deal with the gang leaders. Given into their demands of re-alocating prisoners, allowing them to choose what to wear, where to be, and bringing them new TVs and stuff. That is, the "terrorists" have won. The government has admitted that there is no way to control this. It's like Robocop, with the OCP on strike and the gangs all over. We are, literally speaking, under an absolute state of anarchy. The only thing impeding you to get killed is luck.

And what saddens me is how many ignorant people we have here. I live at a poor area of this region, and today I've heard kids playing on the street, no older than 8 or 9, saying how cool the gangs were, pretending to be part of the gang killing cops - they all want to be criminals when they grow up.

The ammount of people with no access to proper education is enormous. With no proper care, living on misery, simply not caring. For those, crime is a solution to improve their stupid lives. Glamorous. Easy. Non-punishable. Over here, the maximum ammount of time one can spend on jail is 30 years, and I have heard of only ONE person who has been arrested for this long. After ONE THIRD of the time you can appeal and will most likely get out. If you kill someone, odds are you will EASILY escape prison, die there in a couple of weeks if you don't join their gang, or leave in six to ten years. Minors are sent to special child detentions, where they are kept until they are 18 AND RELEASED. If you kill 100 people on a killing spree at 17, you'll be a free man one year later (although the trial usually takes 4 to 5 years, and they keep you locked on the meanwhile, but you get the idea). At prison, even someone who has only stolen something and has no wish to become a major criminal will LEARN the hard way how to become one. Will join the gang and become a mindless pawn of violence. That's why the criminals here call jails "colleges".

So there's no real solution. The government is absolutely corrupt and incompetent. The people is completely ignorant and poor. The police has almost no real power. Not a single part of society wants to do anything about it. Our only hope is that they kill us all in a painless way, as they'll turn this country into a massive gory ultra-violent ignorant and primitive post-apocaliptical nightmare.

If something new happen here, I'll let you know. On the meanwhile, I'll abandon this thread.
