Bowling for Coruscant

Adding to what I`ve said on boycotts on the other topic here, and to the humoristic suggestion I've made some time ago, how about we do something that might take people's attention and opinions: a documentary. A cheap one, done in VHS. It could be called "Bowling for Coruscant". We could get people's opinion on the changes, explain to non-sw fans what is going on, and try to talk with someone from Lucasfilm, maybe even get a word from GL! It would end with colorized stooges shorts over the credits. I could film some testimonials here in Brazil, subtitle them, and send them over to someone who is willing to edit the whole thing. We could all contribute. What do you say?
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

This would be great if we could pull it off. I'd think it'd be fairly hard to create though...

this sounds like its going to require a lot of money.

Not really, a cheap VHS recorded film edited in a computer, for non-profitable reasons. There will be a SW convention in town 2 weeks from now, I could go there and tape some testimonials and interview some people about it, then subtitle (or translate it and send the translation if the subtitles are going to be done later), send it thru the net to someone who might edit it... It would be a short, amateur film, more like a fan film, but opposed to GL's actions...

I know! to prove our point if the film gets popular, we could then go back add GGI and change other things as well and then release only the changed version to DVD and lie say the original doesn't exist anymore.

It could also be called "George and Me."

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

It would be a spoof on Michael Moore films AND a critic on GL's hypocrisie. So, uh, anyone here has some spare time and is skilled on video editing? Dosen't need to be high-res, dosen't need to be a professional work.

If I could suggest as an opening the GL quote from the first page on this site (Then fade to black and maybe then have an opening crawl)

How about, "Fahrenheit 9/21". ^_^ Actually, it wouldn't be too pricey at all. Anime fans work wonders with documentries. There's a cosplaying film shot at Fanime. The creators said nothing about cost. Get a camcorder, ask people about it, be objective, that's it.

I would open with the original, "yub yub" ending scene of ROTJ, with narration going: "Was it all... a dream? Didn't this really happen? Look, there's Sebastian Shawn, he's often in my dreams..."

I laughed when I read this thread. I really wish we could pull something like this off. Id be glad to go film people at my college, see what they think, etc.
I wonder how plausible this is? Even if it just gets pushed around on the net for a while its bound to garner some attention.

I belive that if we could pull this off, it would be a powerful secret weapon. I mean, look what Morgan Spurlock did to McDonalds... It would be the same... We need a great ammount of GL footage, old interviews and stuff, so we can show his hypocrisie. We would need to tape some interviews, show what was changed in 1997 and 2004... Make sure our opinion is heard. It would be a short film, perhaps 30 minutes long...

I've done movie-making before, and I'm pretty good with Premiere, AE, etc as far as making a documentary goes. It would be cool to get a whole collaberative thing going.

I think you should go ahead and film what you can at the convention, then we'll work some stuff out.

Cool, I think we can pull this off... Unfortunally I won't be able to be at this convention, but don't worry, there is frequently a gathering of Star Wars fans somewhere, in a anime convention, or RPG or whatever, so as soon as possible I'll try to tape some interviews and gather as much material as I can... Most of the documentary could be used comparing the movies and the changes. Does anyone here have old GL interviews taped, of him saying things about the special editions and the changes and whatever? Let's see what kind of material we have before we commit to do any work...

I could go to our community college and speak with the film teacher about some of the changes. And I have a lot of friends that are Star Wars fans as well.

As for Lucas interviews, I could watch the Maltin interviews from the THX editions and pull some things out of there. It won't be about the SEs, but we can probably get some good stuff.

I'm up for any help I can give: collecting footage, editing, etc. Anything that gives our plight more attention is good, and this certainly could garner more attention for our cause.
One thing though, is that before I can do any editing, I'm shopping for a new computer that I intend to do video editing on...anyone have any suggestions? I was hoping to get either a Sony Vaio "media center" PC or a Hewlet Packard "Media center" PC. I'm pretty sure I want an ATI Radeon video card, but I'm not sure what else I should make sure I have. How important is the difference between 2.8 GHz CPU and a 3.0 or 3.2 GHz CPU? Any help would be great.

We should also organize a paper petition too, I think that would get more attention than an online petition, there are millions of those. We should have people go to every convention possible and physically collect signatures. We should have a large presence at the Star Wars Celebration III and collect signatures there and just bring attention to our cause. Anyone with me there? We should organize this.

For processor speed, higher is better, but I'd sacrifice that in favor of RAM. I have 256MB right now, and I'm planning to put another 128 in.

Do you know if the mother board on the Vaios or the HPs can take newer, faster CPUs in the future?

Im not too familiar with the demands of video editing on a processor, but I dont think there is much reason for you to have over 3.2 GHz. In my experience the only programs demanding enough for you to even dent 3GHz is something like autocad, or a very complex flight simulator. But like I said, im not too familiar with video editing.

As far as the motherboards facilitating better/faster CPUs in the future, it really depends. Ive seen a bit about the VAIOs being stubborn with new hardware, but that might just be a few people's thoughts.

Also, RAM is very important (as bad karma said). Im running 512 DDR and its buttery smooth, I even committed about 30 percent of my RAM to helping out the processor in a pinch.

Count me in

I edit on a mac with FCP but PC requirements are probably similar(?) so my advice if you have the cash is to get as much ram as you can 1-2gig is good start and Dual processors, They help alot if your apps are multi-threaded especially when rendering your sequence also a fast Hard drive(raptor maybe?) for the scratch disk.

OK folks, here's what we need:

* Footage of the O-OT.
* Footage of the 1997 version and the 2004 version.
* Footage of the line outside the theater in the original 1977 release.
* Footage from TMP and AOTC
* Any GL interviews we can get

Here's what I considered to be the opening shot.

(Fade In, scenes from the celebration in the O-OT ROTJ, edited to finish with Sebastian Shawn's ghost)

NARRATOR: Was it all... a dream? Didn't this really happen? Didn't wee see this scene in the Return of The Jedi back in 1983? And wasn't mr. Sebastian Shawn the actor who played Luke's father, Anakin Skywalker? (zoom in Sebastian's face smiling)

(Cut to 1977 footage of SW fans, international posters, and stuff)

NARRATOR: Star Wars, a cultural fenomenon, a huge hit all over the world, the story of a boy... (Luke's scene "I'm here to help")

NARRATOR: A princess (Leia's "Ben Kenobi?!")

NARRATOR: A man who had nothing to lose (Han "I'm the captain of the milenium falcon")

NARRATOR: And his sidekicks and friends (Chewier growls, Threepio "I am C3PO...", R2 beeping)

NARRATOR: It was a story of heroes... and villains (Darth Vader going into Leia's cell, Tarkin, Emperor in ROTJ getting up)

(Scenes from the battle of Yavin)
NARRATOR: And above all, a story filled with incredible special effects, never seen before in a motio picture.

(Fill in any SFX crew interview, if possible one made around 1977)

(scenes from the movies, if possible old O-OT scenes)
NARRATOR: Star Wars, a new hope. The Empire Strikes Back. Return of the Jedi. That was the trilogy we all loved. The trilogy we enjoyed watching. The movies we loved seeing over, and over, and over again, until...

(silence. fades in to 1997 SE's trailer)

NARRATOR: What was that?! Suddenly, there were creatures we never wanted to see! (1997 Jabba scene, Wampa scene)

NARRATOR: There was CGI all over the place! (Jedi rocks scene)

NARRATOR: Suddenly, Han Solo was not the bravest man in the galaxy, the man we all wanted to be (O-OT shooting Greedo scene)

NARRATOR: ... he was a loser! (1997 Greedo scene)

NARRATOR: (slowly closes up into the 2004 DVD box) And in 2004, when the antecipated DVDs were released, all hell broke loose! Good actors suddenly... Didn't exist anymore! (fades from the Old Emperor scene into the 2004 one, fades from the old sebastian shawn scene to the one with Hayden, slow down, zomms into Hayden's smile)

(Interview with anyone about the changes, explaining what happened)

... and after that, we start talking to fans, and showing the hypocrisie of one man... George Lucas.
