Info Wanted: Bonus Material not offered by the major bootleggers

 (Edited)

The 4-disc “TR47” set, the 7-disc “TR47” set, the 3-disc “Kristhemovieman” dual-layer non-anamorphic set, the 4-disc (I think) “Dr. Gonzo” anamorphic set, the 4-disc (I think) “farsight” anamorphic set, the Rikter set (which ever he is offering), the Laserman set (which ever he is offering), and the MeBeJedi set, the 6-disc Rikter bonus materials set, the Holiday Special, and the VCD with the trailers…these are the major OT bootlegs I know to exist. Does anyone know of any additional bonus material that belongs in a complete collection but doesn’t appear on any of the discs in any of the above-listed sets?

I can only think of the Leonard Maltin interviews from the “Faces” trilogy, the restoration/SE enhancements documentary on the 1997 SE trilogy, PBS’s “George Lucas: Heroes, Myth, and Magic,” “The A&E George Lucas Biography,” The A&E Biographies for Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford, The MSNBC profile of Lucas, “Masters of Fantasy: Dennis Muren,” any additional trailers or TV spots, TV commercials for toys and other products, and, what the Hell, Chewie getting his medal at the MTV Movie Awards.

Of course there is also Hardware Wars, but that is available on DVD, and there is also the upcoming Ewoks movies, and Ewoks and droids cartoons which are either being released soon or will eventually be released.

I would really like to put together the most comprehensive collection possible for the OT. Of course I need to get the actual OT DVDs first so please see my other threads about the different bootlegs to help me decide which sets are worth getting. I’m not against getting more than one, in fact I most likely will, but I still want to avoid the totally aweful ones.

Actually, my first set of OT DVDs I got off Ebay (it's a real crappy set however) and it contained the Lenord Maltin interviews from the Faces LD and the DVD-9 (Five Star) set of the SE have the restoration/SE enhancements documentary and all 3 of the SE trailers.

R2, thanks for the info. Maybe you got one of those "LOOK" sets? Of course, I wouldn't buy a crappy bootleg trilogy just to get the Maltin interviews on DVD, I could just transfer that myself, I have the Faces VHS trilogy. As far as the 5 Star SE trilogy bootlegs, I may get that to possibly use material from that in my own edit of an "acceptable Edition" with the acceptable/livable changes... or mabye even as a possible source for editing together a higher quality transfer of the original cut...but that would be quite a daunting task.

In the mid-80s, PBS played a Nova special about Special Effects. We've got it on BETA, and when my dad has the chance, he said he'd transfer it to DVD for me (gotta love having that Phillips DVD burner/DVR).

There was also a special, pre-ROTJ..."From Star Wars to Jedi" I think. I've got a really bad copy of that too. I'm going to have that transferred as well...if I can find the tape I have it on.

Molly, you may be able to get that 5 Star set on Ebay for like $10. I just want to make sure I have a good copy of the original cut of the OT before I even bother with it.

Starkiller, TR47 offers "From Star Wars To Jedi" and so does Rikter, I think. I'll be getting that stuff soon enough. Oh, and make sure when you have that NOVA special transferred you offer it for sale here! I'd definetly like to see that.

I hope to amass a comprehensive bonus material library. I have the George Lucas A&E biography on VHS and unless I can buy it on DVD, I'll transfer it myself. I also have the MSNBC profile of Lucas, the PBS documentary "George Lucas: Heroes, Myth and Magic," and "Masters of Fantasy: Dennis Muren" all on VHS which I will transfer unless someone beats me to it and does a good job. I will of course offer all of these to you guys. Does anyone have the Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher A&E Biographies? Does anyone know if they are available from A&E on DVD? It would also be great if someone could get a hold of the "Magic Of Myth" documentary from the exibit and transfer that or copy it if it was already on DVD. It'd also be cool if someone could get a hold of the James Earl Jones audio tour of that exibit too.

Just to be sure, was "From Star Wars to Jedi" was the one with those long necked aliens we never actually see in the movie and where Salacious Crumb speaks basic and talks about being packed up and shipped from CA to England for shooting?

Yep. Another example of how shitty the suplemental stuff on the DVDs is. This was actually cool.

Actually, I have one other documentary...I think it was called "From Jedi to Jedi".
It was hosted by Samuel L. Jackson (its kind of funny with him in a Fighter cockpit recycling lines from another movie of his).
I think it covered a fair chunk of ILM and Lucasfilm's work over the years.

I've seen this one.
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

I believe that one aired right after Episode I came out or when it came out on video or something. I remember it focusing mostly on Episode I and the effects breakthroughs that led up to it (like Jurassic Park), correct me if I'm wrong. I think I taped it off TV when it aired, but I don't think it was ever released commercially in any form.

That's the one where he says "The double bladed lightsaber. When you absolutely have to kill every droid in the room." Which was an adaptation of his line about a machine gun from "Jackie Brown."

Does anyone know of anyone offering the famous (and hopefully not-so-famous) deleted scenes on DVD? You know like Anchorhead, Wampas in Echo Base, Sandstorm, etc? And is that VCD with all the trailers available as a DVD?

Thanks again for the input!

Rattlehead:

As you might know, 3 of the 4 deleted scenes from Behind the Magic (recently corrected to include all 4) are on Rowman's special features set, which is 4 discs in size and comes with TR47's set in the 7-disc version.

However, a much more comprehensive overview of the deleted scenes really needs to be done.

And is being done by myself (with help from Jedisluggo, T'Bone, and Rowman's discs) ...

I've already posted about this, but it's called "Deleted Magic" and will try to replicate the infamous "Lost Cut" of ANH as well as possible (and also go into some famous deleted scenes from the other two films). There will be a new crawl, new edits of famous scenes (Ben's Hut, the Tantive IV, the Cantina), and lots of more fun.

This will be available for release on bootleg DVD sometime soon enough.

I don't recall that line, but that is it.
As for a commercial release...it wasn't. I also taped it. But I'm also a bit of a packrat, so I've still got it.

Actually, the line I recall had SLJ in a Naboo Fighter and he was talking about 'striking down upon my enemies with great fury' or something like that.

Hey, Moll.

Turn on your private messaging. I can tell you where to get the factory pressed, dual-layered, 5-Star Special Editions for cheap.

Me three, Rowman, I also wouldn't mind owning that 5 Star set if it is cheap.

Also, one other question about your four disc set that TR47 is offering in his 7 disc set: one of the discs is identical to the 4th disc in TR47's 4 disc set, right? Otherwise there would be 8 discs. I'm I right on this or just very confused? I understood the 4th TR47 disc to be the Definitive Collection bonus material, and the other 3 discs in the 7 disc set to be additional bonus material. If I'm wrong about this I'd appreciate you clearing that up. Thanks.

It's not the same, but similiar. I made 4 bonus discs specifically to compliment the TR47 trilogy. My fourth bonus disc differs from the one TR47 was originally distributing (but he has it now). His original supplemental fourth disc was meant to go with the Dr. Gonzo trilogy that has the commentary track included on the movie discs. This bonus disc included 9 trailers for all three films and all of the supplementary material from the Definitive Collection.

MY fourth disc has the same material, but omits the 9 trailers (as there 14 on my other 3 discs) and includes all of the commentary scenes from all three films that the TR47 trilogy did not include.

Here's the detailed list:

Disc 1 - Star Wars Bonus Material:
-The Making of Star Wars (1977) 50 min.
-4 SW trailers
-"The Moments We'll Always Remember" (30 sec. The Simpsons promo. Bart blows up the Death Star)
-2 deleted Biggs scenes
-Alternate Cantina scene
-3 original audition clips from 1975 featuring Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford
-Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia on Saturday Night Live clip (1978)
-TROOPS (featuring the original "Bad Boys" theme that is not on the Total Movie DVD)
-"That 70's Show" Star Wars episode

Disc 2 - The Empire Strikes Back Bonus Material:
-SP FX: The Empire Strikes Back (1980) 50 min.
-4 TESB trailers
-Harrison Ford, Anthony Daniels, Carrie Fisher, Billie Dee Williams interviews (1980)
-Underoos TV Commercial featuring Boba Fett 30 sec.
-THX demonstration short, "WOW!"
-THX sound editing demonstration short, "Soundtrack!"

Disc 3 - Return of the Jedi Bonus Material:
-Classic Creatures: Return of the Jedi (1983) 50 min.
-From Star Wars to Jedi: The Making of a Saga (1983) 65 min.
-6 ROTJ Trailers (including 2 for "Revenge of the Jedi")

Disc 4 - The Definitive Collection Archive
(All of the supplementary material from the Definitive laserdiscs)
- "War Stories" an interview with the saga creator, George Lucas
- "Sound Advice" an interview with sound designer, Ben Burtt
- "The ABC's of Jedi Effects" an interview with effects supervisor, Dennis Muren
- A guided tour through the Lucasfilm Archives
- "How the Walkers Walk" time-lapse presentation narrated by Dennis Muren
- "A Flight through the Asteroids" story boards to final shot comparison
- Return of the Jedi Videomatics, narrated by Ken Ralston
- The Max Rebo Band's "Lapti Nek" music video
- Concept art slideshow narrated by artist Ralph McQuarrie
- Over fifty scenes from the trilogy with audio commentary by George Lucas, Dennis Muren, Ken Ralston, Ralph McQuarrie, Ben Burtt, and Frank Oz
- Hundreds of behind the scenes and special effects production stills from all three films

Disc 5 - The Star Wars Holiday Special (1978)
GUARANTEED to be the best copy you'll ever see. It was mastered from an original (and WELL PRESERVED) VHS tape recording of the one-time airing in 1978 on CBS. Also included is a one-minute Star Wars toy commercial with the same audio and video quality.

Yeah, Rowman's Holiday Special disc is sweet. It would probably look about the same if it came out on "official" VHS.
