I'd love to see an 8K transfer of the Technicolor prints they still have
Wouldn't that be overkill?
Yes.
OK, 1080p scans will be great too :-)

This is too funny to not post:
The IB Technicolor prints can only be used for a color reference and not a source scan.
Can someone please post the relevant quote from Roger Christian regarding this "digital" release of the movies in November?
^It wasn't much. They were discussing Black Angel and he just mentioned that as a possible extra:
"They're trying to put it out [Black Angel] with the digitized six Star Wars that are coming in November. They're trying to see if they can do it. They've never done it before - have additional material like that…"
I doubt it will be the originals, but who knows. More than likely just a digital download with exclusive bonus content to entice fans into purchasing it. But I still have hope they will be released before Ep VII.
“In the future it will become even easier for old negatives to become lost and be “replaced” by new altered negatives. This would be a great loss to our society. Our cultural history must not be allowed to be rewritten.” - George Lucas
Has Disney ever done a release in cooperation with another major studio? I could see them sharing profits, to allow the fans to get them ASAP and ease Fox into letting Star Wars go in 2020.
So glad to see the prequel crap finally leaving stores and replaced by OT crap.
It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher
Disney co-produced Dragonslayer and the live action Popeye movie with Paramount in the early 80's. Disney distributed the films overseas, and retains the video rights there as well.
Where were you in '77?

There are women in the photo? I was too busy making sure Tatooine's twin suns were the right color. But now that you mention it... totally agree.

In their defense, they're probably facing the women wearing the prequel trilogy dresses.

They are scannable now, with modern equipment.

Roger Christian recently confirmed rumours of digital versions becoming available in November 2014. It's possible these will be the original versions.
When/where was this?
Last week's episode of Rebel Force Radio.
It would be nice to own the OUT on Blu-Ray, but I don't see the point when Harmy's Despecialized Editions are on the internet. But to each his own I suppose.

If you have something higher up the duplication chain than a projection print, use that instead. Technicolor prints are very good quality projection prints, and I think are actually one generation higher than your typical 35mm projection print, but they are still projection prints. Lots of detail from the negatives has been lost. On the other hand, Technicolor prints retain their color better than most anything else (assuming they got the right color to begin with, which was a bit of an issue with Technicolor in its earlier days, but not really with Star Wars), so for a color reference, you could do a lot worse. So I agree wholeheartedly with Fang Zei, if you replace "can" with "should".

Harmy's work is excellent and the next best thing we have to the genuine article at the moment. But it is not perfect and in no way a replacement for the real thing.

Yeah, it's still not about fans being able to make something nearly as good as an official OOT, it's about them needing to release it and stop with the revisionist history that's going on.
Keep Circulating the Tapes.
END OF LINE

I think it's just depressing. They look starved, disinterested, miserable (yeah, I know, the look they're giving is intentional) and, frankly, repulsive as a result of all that.
Seriously, could anyone explain to me why anyone would watch this and find it appealing in any way? For the (supposedly) purty dresses?
An officially released, properly done, restoration of the originals would not only be nice. It'd be an act of good will on the part of Disney to let fans of the originals know that they're not being slighted anymore. Plus it'd be easier to get more people into watching the originals. Another thing is that it would allow for things like proper commentary tracks and other things that you just don't get from a fan restoration on the internet. Plus, for me personally, it'd alleviate any feeling that they're gonna do their own "re-versioning" of Star Wars like they did to Power Rangers. Or at least if they did we'd at least have a non-Disney preferred altered version. They would've at least released the originals first before altering it to such a degree.Lord Haseo said:

Do you really believe that Lucas would do a commentary track for the OOT? ;)
They could probably get Gary Kurtz. A group cast commentary would be good too.

Well, Ford never did an audio commentary, and I don't think he would do one for SW. But Hamill I can imagine being up for it. Still I really doubt a commentary wihtout Lucas would ever be considered.
They could always piece one together from other sources. ;)

I'm sure he'd like that ;)
Provoke the desired responses ala Bowfinger?
Not really but I was thinking more in terms of a cast commentary. Aside from that it was just a quick example of things an official restoration could offer. A commentary or lack thereof is obviously not some "make or break" thing to me nor is it something I especially need from such a release. It's just a bonus that'd be possible, even if unlikely, with an official release that fan restorations wouldn't be able to offer.

LOL Kind of goes against my "proper commentary" stance there. I guess the thinking of having them sitting together commenting on the film is too "old school". Gotta bring a team of editors in there somehow eh?
