Help Wanted: for a Blade Runner & THX-1138 preservation

Hey there, everyone!!!

I’ve been wanting to post this forever, but always keep forgetting to do so.

I have the LD versions of Blade Runner and THX-1138 on DVD. They are complete and in great quality. Just a simple copy from LD to DVD kind of thing on CD-R. I have the LDs and did the copying myself, so all is legal!!!

However, the movies have the breaks in them where the disk was turned over and changed. I would love to get this editied together into on continuous movie and I don’t know how to do this.

Can someone point me in the right direction? I’m a novice at this stuff though. I would love if someone more experienced would do it for me though.
I’ve seen the work done here on the Star Wars LDs and I know I’m asking the right people cuz you guys who do the editing on those LDs did an awesome job.

The relatively cheap and cheerful way to do it is to get the Womble MPEG-2 editor. That should let you cut what you want with a minimum of recompression. You'll still have to re-author (I believe), but that's not such a huge chore. Try DVDlab for that.

I'd recommend trying some of this yourself first, before agreeing to send it off elsewhere. My impression of OT.com is that there are a lot of people who will gladly take your stuff, and maybe not necessarily do as nice a job on the editing as you yourself could if you'd only give it a shot. Or, some others (like me) would gladly take your stuff with the best of intentions, but because they've got about 50 projects on the go already, it'll be early 2010 before you see any results back.

It never hurts to learn how to do stuff yourself. If you get good results, awesome; there's one more person around here who can contribute good results. If you're disappointed with the results, too bad; you've still got the recourse of being able to send your stuff to someone else -- but you'll more fully understand the issues, and why it's taking a while, and how tough it might be to get excellent results!

My 2¢, anyway.

Ok....I'll give it a try myself. There's not too much cutting to do. I think BR has like 3 or 4 blank spots and THX has 2 or 3. Can't be that much work....

Can someone describe to me the basic steps to go about this. I have the movies on DVD already, the the files with be the VOBs. How do I get them from the VOBs to editable form? Please add in anything that you think might help.

Thanks a lot in advance!!!

MPEG-VCR will edit vob files directly. All you have to do is open your "MPEG file or movie" from the file tab, go to where you want to make your edit, at the start of the edit click the "Mark In" button and insert a marker, at the end of the edit click the "Mark Out" button and insert a second marker. Once you're happy with where those are then select "Cut" then "Save". Of course none of these buttons are labelled, but they do have tooltips, so you'll get used to it pretty quick.

Tip of the day: It's useful to find the exact point with the frame by frame "step" buttons.
