Better than 'ignore' function

The ignore feature is controversial feature, and rightly so imho. it is a heavy handed response to an issue, and it probably doesn’t actually solve anything, and only further isolates different viewpoints from each other.

What would be better is a feature that gets at the root of the issue, something that helps diffuse the tension.

You know how sometimes when you go to send an email, you get a warning ‘hey, it looks like you meant to include an attachment’, or ‘hey, you didn’t include a subject line’.

I propose a similar feature here.

  • you add a user to your ‘avoid arguments’ list.
  • all of those users posts are sligtly more opaque when browsing (subtle, enough to still read them, but visually de-emphasised).
  • when you reply to one of their posts, you get some sort of “slow down buddy, remember you added this user to your ‘avoid arguments’ list because you often get into pointless arguments… is this really worth posting? here are some links to cute cat pics instead” warning.

This is a 100 percent serious suggestion.

this sounds wonderful. i really like the suggestion.

however, maybe wait for when Episode IX comes out because it’s likely going to be the next time a discussion is going to be had here.

also, the ignore function is much preferrable to what ocurrred over at off-topic yesterday.

I’d probably put everyone on my list just for the cat pics.

I fully support this idea, sounds like a great way to make someone think twice before posting something they probably shouldn’t and allows the possibility of seeing a post by someone you’ve added to the list that you might actually relate to and possibly start the process of resolving differences instead of having fragmentation of the community and oddly stilted conversations because one or more people cant see other responses that are part of the overall discussion.

Mods, is there any chance this could be implemented? Or is there no such functionality available with this particular forum software?
