I just saw Superman Returns last night and I have to say I loved it!! And no I’m not of the mind it needs an edit. So I have to ask brining myself up to speed, what is the best version of The first Superman film, including original and edits? Obviously that Margot Kidder voice over has to go.

Other than the Superman RIC, I don't know of another Sup1 fan edit besides the one I'm working on. And yes, her poem/song voice-over is out!

I don't know of any fan edits of Superman either. Someone on here was planning to do an edit of Superman II to put Marlon Brando back in at Zod's trial on Krypton As for the different versions of the film, these are the ones I can think of, but there are probably more out there that I've missed.
1. Theatrical
2. 80's TV edit
3. Special Edition DVD
4. RIC

I personally perfer the DVD, but the RIC is pretty good, but the quality is better in the offical DVD.

Not to be thick but what's RIC?

I like the SE on DVD by far the best. The only regrettable thing is, as mentioned the Lois Lane poem, but its not all that bad and its brief. But other than that all the additions are fabulous--you get some great extra development on Clarke's home life on the farm that rounds out the characters much more and some great scenes later on including a terrific one of Superman fighting Lex Luthor's machine gun room. I find the extra extended editions that include every deleted scene to become boring but the Special Edition is rightly balanced IMO.

The RIC is the restored International Cut. It is bascially Superman:the Movie, with every deleted scene in it. There are several versions of this available, one that was taken from a laserdisc or DVD, I don't know which, with the additional scenes added in. Another is a rip from a VHS recorded from an airing in Australia. There was supposed to be another copy that was aired in the US once, but I've never seen it.
I agree with Zombie84. Some of the added scenes are too much, and cause the movie to drag in places. The DVD(SE) adds in scenes, but not too many to where is becomes overwhelming, IMHO.
