Best (and worst) lightsaber design?

Author
Time

Out of the various forms the light sabers been made in the movies and EU, what’s your favorite and worst? For me the worst is the ones that used to need to be plugged in, in the EU. I imagine the cords could get in the way. Probably best for me is the double light saber in Episode 1. It’d be scary to handle but would be very intimidating too.

Likewise, I’d say the worst cell phones are the ones where you had to carry a giant shoulder bag battery pack around, and the best ones are modern smart phones.

I know it’s blasphemy, but I always liked Dooku’s saber hilt.

I agree that the curved hilt is nice. It makes ergonomic sense, to me.

EDIT: However, if the Dooku lightsaber toy I got long ago is accurate to the actual size of the hilt, I do consider it a little on the large size. A curved, distinctly one handed lightsaber makes sense.

I thought Dooku’s lightsaber was strange looking when I first saw AOTC. Once I learned what the designer was going for with it (a scimitar aesthetic), it didn’t bother me anymore.

Arguably one of the worse designs might be the light-pike. The EU made the matter of reach between a lightsabre and an equivalent spear like weapon almost a non issue with the idea of lightsabre blade length adjustment, and it always tried to establish that lightsabre resistant materials were supposed to be rare, making the light-pike an extremely expensive and difficult to carry weapon compared to a regular lightsabre set to being long.

Worst: helicopters (Rebels)

Best: Luke’s saber (ROTJ)

Honorable Mention: Kylo’s saber

Okay, I’ve actually found the worst possible lightsaber design. It’s absolutely abysmal. I bet no one can top this one in abject atrociousness.

The only thing I can think of would be to add more spikes until he’s effectively a porcupine of lightsabres. Then we’d hit peak stupid.

EDIT: Oh God, it is legends canon. Why is that legends? Who thought that was a good idea?

If I got paid a dime every time I asked that question, I’d a billionaire ten times over.

At the risk of injecting Politics here, I don’t think I’d be making fun of Canada after November 8th happened.

I’d say that the lightwhip was one of the weirdest and most impractical lightsaber designs that ever existed in any canon (if it even counts).

I could see something like that making more sense if it behaved somewhat different physically from a lightsaber, ie, a plasma-whip which deals immense damage but doesn’t cut through metal like butter.

Didn’t Lumiya’s lightwhip from the 80’s Marvel comics kinda work like that?

I don’t mind the idea if a plasma-whip, but the weapon shown above is essentially just a floppy lightsaber (and yes, I realize that sounds ridiculous), which seems really dangerous and impractical.

For designs I grew to like, I must say the cross-guard sabre seemed dangerously impractical at first, but I grew to enjoy it more after they actually made use of the fact that it can hurt, and that people who actually study longsword pointed out that with proper technique, the odds of hitting yourself with the crossguard is practically nill.

Things like that are what I point to when people moan about the old canon becoming Legends.

Agreed. It works surprisingly well as a saber design.

And in no time the biggest threat to mankind disappeared and was never spoken of again. Seriously, do you guys remember how big of a deal some people made of this way back when?

Yes. I wasn’t on (EDIT: here) then, but I was part of the group that was making a big deal over it.

I was also annoyed with how they made the lightsaber blade look, as I was concerned that it’d be the default appearance. It wasn’t, and I was satisfied.
