Help: looking for... Best Original Trilogy/Prequel Edits for newbies?

Hi, this is the 1st time I’ve posted here, & I couldn’t find a thread that seemed to answer this question. I recently watched Adywan’s Star Wars Revisited/Purist Editions &, like most of you, was amazed & pleased. I won’t be watching my 2004 DVD anymore. Can someone recommend the best Original Trilogy/Prequel Edits done in a similar fashion?

1. Sourced from the Fox DVDs, perhaps with image correction.
2. More faithful to the Original Trilogy theatrical releases, retaining FX enhancements but removing plot/image changes.
3. Juvenile elements cutback or out; this includes Ewoks, Jar Jar & child/adult Anakin. If the scene/character/dialogue advances the plot, fine, but no mugging/whining for the camera.

Thanks

Ok, I'll give this a stab.

For Episode 1 I'm a big supporter of Return of the Sith by a fan editor called Seciors. He's made the radical change of removing the Darth Sidious character from the film entirely. I feel this improves the overall experience in three ways. 1. It makes the Trade Federation appear far more assertive and decisive now that they aren't following someone else’s orders. 2. It makes Darth Maul's introduction and presence in the film far more mysterious. 3. The surprise that Palpatine is Sidious is retained.

Seciors has also removed all of the underwater sequence from the film. The Jedi now just head straight for the Palace and rescue the Queen. The first fifteen minutes of Return of the Sith is blistering entertainment - and this is coming from a pretty harsh prequel critic.

It's also worth noting that Seciors has also removed the terms "trade" and "tax" from the edit.

For Episode 2 I like L8wtr's Republic Divided. L8wtr is a good, thoughtful editor and he has rescued the Anakin Skywalker character as well as restored the Obi-Wan/Anakin relationship in this edit.

For Episode 3 I watch Kerr's Dark Force Rising. Lots of great cuts there to streamline the Revenge of the Sith experience.

The only edit in this list that I have seen is Dark Force Rising, and I agree, very good cut. I'll have to take a look at these other attempts.

Thank you both for the input, I was already interested in Kerr's Lord of the Rings Edits. Please keep the suggestions coming, all!

I consider myself "in the know" when it comes to SW fanedits but I've never heard of Seciors or his/her Episode I edit.  It would be much appreciated if you could give me a bit of info about it including where I might find it.

Edit:  Just found it on FE.org : )

How would you compare it to L8's Shadow of the Sith?

Just a few more quick notes:

Consider L8wtr’s Shadow of The Sith. It’s a less radical re-edit of the Phantom Menace than Return of the Sith. I think his approach was to tell the same story, but to tell it better. Anakin is still the chosen one, Palpatine is still obviously Sidious etc... the true strength of his edit lies in the dialogue. He’s removed pretty much everything that is redundant and has improved Anakin Skywalker, Jar-Jar Binks and many other annoying characters.

A really radical one that's coming out soon is BobGarcia's Revenge of the Sith edit. It features a lot of special effects edits a' la the Revisited films, and dialogue and music changes. You can watch it's progress on the forums. :D

Hmm. I thought it had a scheduled release date of sometime around next year.....but now, for the life of me, I can't remember where I heard that. :o
Whatever. Sorry to over-lather everyone.

I think the best Episode I is Q2's (aka. Thunderclap's). The reason for this is that though L8wrtr's edit is good, in various places where the dialogue is missing, there seems to remain a time where the dialogue could have been spoken which leaves one thinking something was removed from that space. In short, the periods where there was dialogue cut need to be tightened up. Q2 does this wonderfully. Seciors' edit was very well done as far as story, but there are places where he takes a word or two of dialogue from one place in the film and puts it in the middle of another scene, and the inflections sound like they don't quite match.

The best Episode II is L8wrtr's. Q2's comes in at a very close second, but L8wrtr's edges out in being slightly better at handling the love story. It's hard to say specifically what is different for me, as I haven't compared them scene for scene. It's more of a feeling I get between the characters. Seciors' is ambitious, but again the dialogue edits in places are a bit noticeable and jarring.

The best Episode III is Q2's because although Kerr, L8wrtr and Stankpac want to have Palpatine reveal his "Sith form", the implementation they use just doesn't work very well at all given the available footage (cut to Palpy who looks normal, then to Anakin/Windu, then back to Palpy who is inexplicably wrinkly.) Also, L8wrtr wants to keep Yoda from using a lightsaber, so he creates a wtf moment where Yoda is in danger and then is inexplicably not anymore.

Further, Q2 (Thunderclap) does all he can to remove R2 and 3PO from the prequels, and while I was skeptical at first, it really really does help the story a lot.

I'm a Slumberland fan.

Watching his episode one was the first time I actually laughed at Jar-Jar's slapstick.

I also liked what JasonN did with Sidious (masking his face and voice so we have no idea who it's supposed to be) and Dooku (making him never become a Sith and remain a loyal Jedi who has uncovered the truth but isn't believed so has gone rogue to defend the galaxy).

But for me the only way I can get serious enjoyment out of the PT at the moment is watching Frink's edits.

^^^Kerr's handling of Palps turning to Sid is the best moment I've seen in a PT fanedit.  I don't understand how anyone could complain about it.

I love the first thirty minutes of Q2's Episode I; the extra dialogue cuts (no battle droid voices at all, less Jar-Jar, Anakin and Padme) and the removal of Sidious and the droids works in its favour.

I don't like how he changed the die-roll scene though, and prefer L8wrtr's edit from that point; a no-name pilot destroying the control ship doesn't work for me. I would have made a cut 'n' shut edit of the two, except the missing characters then show up out of nowhere.

I'm surprised at how much I like The Phantom Menace now, thanks to these guys. I try to avoid watching the other two, but I remember enjoying Stankpac's ROTS right after watching the DVD version and hating it.

You should try out Seciors' Episode I.  That one is a tie for me with Q2's as the best.  Stankpac's ROTS is still my favorite version of Episode 3.

I just burned a copy of Secior's Episode II for DVD-5.  It has a very noticeable and distracting judder, even when there isn't a whole lot of motion.  Is this just a fluke in the burning process or is this something like an inadequate PAL to NTSC conversion?

 (Edited)

I'm now watching Kerr's Episode 3 (Dark Force Rising), and it is indeed very good. The cuts are decidedly better than L8wrtr's, and perhaps even on par for me with Q2's.

It makes me consider going back to look again at L8wrtr's Episode 3, but remembering L8wrtr's inclusion of Chewbacca and the WTF moment with Yoda being suddenly safe from the troopers keeps me from actually bothering with it.

I noticed that the voices on Kerr's NTSC DVD5 are higher pitched than normal, and the dialogue seems to be very slightly faster. I slowed down the playback speed in VLC to 90% and it seemed better. The pauses in dialogue when have conversations certainly felt less rushed. Padme's voice still sounded half an octave too high, though. I even opened Q2's Ep3 to compare them, and Q2's voices are indeed lower (ie. normal). I think this may be due to a bad PAL to NTSC transfer (which I don't know how to fix, if it's even possible).

On the other hand, Q2 used the Blurays as a source for his edits without color-correcting them, which is also apparent in various scenes throughout his PT trilogy. I also confirmed this my comparing the opera house scene between Kerr's and Q2's.

The color problems in Q2's are not as annoying to me though as the sound problems with Kerr's.

Hi guys

Not sure where to post really. Need some help please! I recently watched revisted and love it apart from the music in various places like the conference in the death star and also figure my son - when he's old enough to watch - would probably be more excited if C3PO mentions a princess early on in the movie - i.e. not just "there'll be no escape this time', hence my desire for the Adywan revisited purist version.

All I'm going to say is that I'm having trouble finding the purist version. Can someone give me a clue please? The .info site I was looking at has the revisited but not the purist... :)

Thanks.
