Just saw the trailer. Why the hell does the entire movie look like a computer game? It's like everything is entirely CGI. Is it some kind of new technique?

I think it is kind of going to the 300 look. It is ashame because a serious adaption (along the lines of Lord of the Rings or Braveheart) of Beowulf could be something very worthwhile. But this film isn't aiming at the literary crowd or anyone who might have ever even considered reading the epic, but rather they are aiming at the same crowd as 300, anyone who will be blown away by the special effect, CG blood, and Angelina's bra size.

Yes, 300 also had that sort of look. But it didn't bother me that much. I think for Beowulf it's even worse. The characters also look computer generated. I didn't notice that in 300.

Its 100% CGI, like Final Fantasy. It has Angelina Jolie in it but its a CG Angelina Jolie. Dumb I guess but you know people come to see celebrities so they retained all the performers likenesses.

Well if it's completely animated then I'll go to see it for that fact. At least when everything's animated you don't have to endure the stark contrast of a real body and a fake one in the same movie (like a CGI Yoda talking to Obiwan). But, I'm sure I'll be sick of CGI by the end.

So the "actors" didn't have to act? They were recreated? Or were they filmed and turned into CGI characters?

I don't see why people are so up in arms about this. The source material isn't that great or thought provoking to begin with. Beowulf himself is an incredible Gary Stu and constantly veers off into random moralizing while not living by the morals himself.

I liked the way my English teacher told the story when I was in high school. And I love the Star Trek equivalent of Beowulf in one episode of Voyager.

There's nothing wrong with the core of the story, which is why I think a movie would work a lot better than the written form. So far this movie is getting mostly decent reviews. 71% at Rotten 'Maters.

I am not too familar with the term Gary Stu, but from the provided link it seems like it indicates a cliched character. Which is an odd term to use, since Beowulf predates most of the characters that would make him a cliche. And as far as the story not being that great or thought provoking, I don't think you can really hold such an old work up to modern standards. It would be like critizing Homer's works because they didn't live up to todays standards, or saying that Odysseus is a cliched character. For such a not so great story that is not thought provoking it sure has influenced modern story a good deal. I am in no way "up in arms" about the whole thing, but there is no possible way of denying the historical importance of Beowulf and the impact it has had on stories. I just think it is ashame that such an important work gets such an adaption. I would have liked to have seen something more along the lines of Braveheart and Lord of the Rings, rather than 300. Don't get me wrong, I liked 300 and I thought it was a fantastic adaption of the graphic novel, and its style worked for what it was. But Beowulf? I just felt it deserved better than CG and Angelina as Gendel's mum.

Not that he's cliched, but that he's basically inhumanly good at everything, even morality, just because the narrator said so. I know that's basically how most legends were written way back then, but when I read it it just struck me as a prototype that's been done better by its imitators. I know it was a landmark in British literary history, and I'm not knocking that. At the same time, I don't think we should put it on a pedestal as great literature.

When you get right down to it, Beowulf is better suited to the wartime campfire exaggeration, crazy CGI-fest style in the vein of 300 than it is to the more realistic tone given to Lord of the Rings. Beowulf wasn't a complex story, it's "Hi, I'm Beowulf, King ArseKick of KickArse Mountain, and you're terrorizing my friends. Die."

Jeez Chaltab!

First you liken Ghostbusters to Luigi's Mansion!! And as if that wasn't enough, then you liken a great piece of historical literature, and one of the most frightening tales I have ever read to childrens campfire stories!!

Not only that, but not too long ago you admited to not liking the original Metroid for the NES, possibly the finest video game that was every made with the hands of mortals. Have you no taste!! I really liked you before man, but now I have to say you have dove to my absolute least favorite poster. Even lower than Rob.

When did I do that?

And what's wrong with the comparison of GhostBuster's to Luigi's Mansion? LM was basically Ghost Busters with a Mario coat of paint.

I didn't see the "wartime" the first time I read this, I just saw campfire exaggeration. So strike the "children's" from my comment.

Anyway, I wasn't serious about any of that, I was just playing around.

Geez, I wonder if the filmmakers made it a point to remind the audience who the main character was every chance they got. You know, just in case people forgot the name of the movie while they were watching it. I'd seriously like someone to count how many times someone says "Beowulf" during the course of the movie. It has to be some kind of record.

This was a pretty decent movie. There are some pretty cool action sequences, though it does seem to drag in places. I saw the "RealD" version which was awesome. I'm not sure if I would have liked it as much had I seen the regular version.

sorry to say it but tolkien would be outraged were he alive to see the film treatments of both his lord of the rings and beowulf. fake cgi and utter crap.

neil gaiman and robert z could not follow the poem and decided to hollywooddoodle a classic of english literature to make it into something trite read tolkiens monsters and the critics. had he written that today if he was still alive he would addess the hollywood people who make films that are bastardizations of the awesome poem.

So Hollywood butchered a piece of historic literature. So what? You're overreacting.

I'd say this is one of the rare cases where Hollywood made it better.

Maybe it's just because I saw the 2D version, but I thought this movie was absolute balls. Perhaps without the cool visuals, one really notices what little substance this movie actually has.

You think that's surprising? Ernest Hemingway only had confusingly-written sex scenes to cover up his novels' general lack of redeeming value, but people praised him all the same.

You expected a movie about Beowulf to have substance?

as far as I can tell (having studied the text in school), Gaiman simply tried to add a bridge to the story to connect the second and third acts whilst tieing up some of the loose ends

Neil Gaiman wrote the script? That would be another sign leading me to think I might like the film. I'm waiting until my friends organize an IMAX expedition though.
