Beginner to capturing LD on PC. Help with new video card.

Just installed my new ATI HD750. I know it's not the greatest, but it seems to do okay, and I'm more concerned with archiving audio tracks for the time being.

I haven't gotten a new soundcard yet but wanted to get started learning this. My problem is that once I got into virtualdub, at first I could see my LD player connected and now I get nothing besides a black screen.

How do I go about learning this for a straightforward capture?

EDIT: I think this card is screwy. I've tried every driver and nothing works. The software included crashed and necessitated a system restore. Each driver I try causes a system restore on startup.

...It's supposed to work on Windows 7.

Had to take the damn thing out to fix my PC. Guess it doesn't work with my Win7 as it claims. Go figure.

Just to let you know, my old VGX-XL 202 capture card (original factory card) works flawlessly with VirtualDub on Windows XP, but crash with Windows 7...

As your card is quite good, and if you can (and want to) downgrade the O.S. to Windows XP, I'll give it a try... with the "ancient black magic" of analog video capture, sometimes it's the best way to go! (^^,)

At least if it will work, you will have a spare PC just for capture purposes, and it's a big pro to me - I'll do this in a near future!

As I wrote into the other thread, there are PCI->PCIe 1x adapter, where you can plug a PCIe 1x card into a PCI plug, but you need to carefully watch for dimensions...

The ATI 750 does work on Win7 x64. Not sure why it's causing so many problems for you.

On the lddb forum, someone mentioned checking bios to make sure all PCIe slots are active. Anyone know how to do this exactly? I'll be the first to admit I'm not very inclined to computer knowledge.

What I did was to install the card (physically) and then turn on the power and let it boot up and win7 x64 should find and install a driver automatically.  Do not install anything from the cd that came with the card.  Use only virtualdub with this card.

I installed the software and thought eh, i'll give the tv tuner software a try.  It crashed the system.

Automated windows driver installation and strictly using virtualdub is the only way I've ever been successful.  That being said, with laserdisc, it is quite a good card for capturing. There is the supposed agc problem but I believe that is only on vhs captures.

I'm pretty sure your pcie slots are active right out of the box.  You'd have probably had to somehow disable them manually for them to be off.

The fact that you said you were initially getting a video feed into virtualdub showing laserdisc video and then later only a blackbox makes me think you might have changed the source from s-video to composite or vice versa or something similar and stopped getting a video feed because you weren't hooked up to the right input? You probably wouldn't even get a black box in virtualdub if the card wasn't working. I had switched the card over to s-video once and forgot and it took me a day to figure out why I couldn't get video.

Thanks, I'll give it another try. I never used what the immediate loading driver did, instead I used the on disc driver and the newer one from the website. The included software did indeed crash my system.

My setting was always composite, but as soon as I tried to make the capture setting in VirtualDub it immediately went to the black screen. I tried restarting, I tried reinstalling files and finally a new updated Virtualdub but still nothing. Some on videohelp have had this same thing happen for no reason.

Still got the black screen, it seems that virtualdub has locked in custom capture settings for this card no matter what I do or what version of the program I use. What settings for capture are best for this card? Maybe if I can get the right ones it will work again.

I give up. My PC had to have system restore done again and again, plus I got a lovely BSOD. I'm done with this thing. Pulled it out and now have no idea what to do with it. By all means it should work fine but it doesn't.

Return for exchange? At least then you'll know whether it's the card itself.

I bought it off ebay from a good seller who had used it a few times for LD capture. I don't think I can return it, but I don't think it would be the card either since someone else used it perfectly.
