For the first time since 1999, you can now enjoy The Matrix trailer in full 1080p high definition:

2K Prores file is available for anyone interested.

That was awesome! Thanks for sharing!

I’m glad you like it. I can’t take too much credit for it, the scanner sourced it bought it and scanned it, and all I did was nag him for it and then upload it!

If you want to see a whole bunch more 35mm trailers check out my page here:

https://valeyard.net/2017/03/we-just-love-trailers.php

I started indexing all the trailers I could find online there. Include each and everything that Williarob has uploaded (that took a while!)

On the topic of BATB, it has been sent to the scanner, so now I’m just waiting for it to be received and samples to be sent… unfortunately I still don’t have a BATB trailer but I am following up leads. Also known as nagging the collectors that told me that they might have a trailer. 😃

I was intrigued to see that the color timing of The Matrix trailer seems very much like how it is on the film print scan we have.

This could mean one of two things: either this was an early version of the color scheme that only appeared on the first run of prints, and later prints were revised to the more familiar green; or else that all prints appeared this way, and the green was only introduced on home video months later. For the most part, I think this film version just looks better than it ever did later on: the look is clearly artificial, but it still has that organic look that well made film provides, without being completely antiseptic and cold like the later revisions.

Anyway, not to derail the thread, but I thought that was interesting . . .

Much thanks to Doombot for his generous donation!

Yeah, the bluray colour timing on the Matrix is completely revised, not unlike BATB actually - but not as extreme as BATB. You should keep in mind though that the Matrix trailer like pretty much all trailers you see is just a plain raw scan with no corrections done, and may not be wholly reflective of how it would look projected.

Many thanks to TonyWDA for his generous donation!

Keep it up guys, you have no idea how many prints I need to have scanned. Here is yet another miscellaneous print patiently waiting for me to try and organise scanning:

I can’t believe people actually let me clutter up their houses with my crap. 😄

I remember seeing a complaint against the BD’s colors in that the brightness made the Beast’s design far too discernable in the early scenes, taking the impact out of the “Step into the light” scene, which was originally the first time the audience gets a clear view of what he looks like…
Being that this movie is older than me and I never saw it in theaters though, I obviously can’t say for sure. But the idea of a 35mm scan of the film still appeals to me because I really don’t like how the BD looks. It looks to me like they applied some rather aggressive edge enhancement or something to it, and the gradients look really messed up at points.

‘‘Almost’’ the same for me: it was the first movie I saw in theaters but the first I ‘‘remember’’ is a little film starring a cowboy and an astronaut where they and others, including a dinosaur, a stretchy dog, and a mutant potato, worship a deity. Points if you can guess what it is (I promise you’ll laugh 😄)

Anyway, I can’t judge how Beauty and the Beast should’ve looked, but I never really had a problem with the DVD or Blu-Ray (although if you’re making the accusation, maybe I remember a little less of a blue tint. I don’t know shrug). I wish you luck on funding and scanning, and I’d be more than happy to help clean it up if you want (I have GIMP, so it’ll have to be TIFF frames). I’d appreciate a comparison video, just to see what changes there are.

Hi monkeyjb- guessing from your username you of course couldn’t have appreciated this film in its original run! I was able to see it in 2015 projected from a theatrical print, and I can tell you 100% it looked nothing like the DVD or bluray. 😃

Aladdin looks pretty much correct compared to the theatrical prints. Not perfect, but not different enough that I would worry as much about it as I do BATB. You are more than welcome to have a crack at restoration, it will be scanned in Prores format, but all you would need to do is load a clip in Resolve and export .TIFs.

And I’m still waiting for some high-res preview images! I’m a little surprised it’s taking so long given that Face/Off has been scanned and can’t move anywhere until this scan gets done (sorry face/off fans lol).

Yeah, I was 3 (but already awesome 😃). Still one of my top 5 favorite films and my favorite soundtrack.

I don’t have Resolve but I do have Blender and I know how to turn a clip to Tiff files 😃

Ah well, you can download Resolve for free. I’m STILL waiting for the scanner to send through some previews, lol. Which is annoying because it’s holding up funding, and plus I have the Alien print I want to have scanned too.

Holy cow, does that looks fantastic! I would love to see a film scan of Aladdin.

Agreed! What really strikes me is that the Genie is more of a soft baby blue than the bold royal blue I remember from the Blu-ray. In fact, all of the Blu-ray colors seem oversaturated in comparison. Man, what a great film. 😃

Yeah, how great would that be? I’m still focused on getting BATB done, hopefully I can find a second print in English to scan. I have about 6 other Disney prints though including two Cindy prints, so lots to do… eventually!

Don’t mean to derail the topic, but I’d love to get a hold of the prores file for The Matrix trailer as a color reference.

You can’t use it as a colour reference unfortunately. These are all uncorrected scans. To get the correct colour, etc, you really need to project it. Or send it to a scanner that provides calibrated LUTs (those labs are more expensive though).

Ah, I see, what a shame. The 35mm release we got is quite bad and I’m looking for alternatives at the moment. Thanks anyways.
