Backstroke of the West Dubbed Version (Released)

Hello Star Wars People,

I’m probably not the right place but a person named SilverWook told me to post on this site about this DVD of Backstroke of the West my friend brought back with her from China.

It’s a version where they’ve dubbed the voices instead of the subtitles.

I was able to burn some of the chapters off but have since given it to my friend who was able to burn a lot more. I also talked with Magnoliafan78 about this.

The You Tube page is here-

Welcome aboard, TheThirdGathers! Thank you so much for not giving up on this.

If the complete audio can be extracted, it will be a cinch for one of our resident Jedi masters to marry this up with video from the official DVD. :)

That might be a good idea sometime. I see that track 1 is missing the video for the first minute or so. You guys could probably connect it to like a BluRay version or something.

It's kind of in the hands of my friend right now. He knows more about this stuff. He said he had to add what he could of the picture using a different DVD but it worked fine though it might not be exactly lined up.

It was really difficult getting that thing play, so I'm watching most of this stuff on You Tube for like the first or second time like everyone else.

It's pretty hilarious, though. Who made this and what were they thinking?

What blows my mind is how spot on some of the voices are. Even bit parts like the alien with the "surfer dude" voice on the bridge of Grievous' ship.

If the opening scroll isn't narrated somebody needs to make a proper Backstroke version. ;)

Do you happen to know if the soundtrack on the DVD is 5.1 or not?

drf was also talking about the idea of adding the Backstroke dub *and* the Backstroke subs to his dvdiso. xD

I should watch the original again some time.

Who do you think are the best voices?

Mace sounds pretty close to Samuel Jackson. Anakin and Obi Wan also sound pretty close. If I didn't know any better, I'd suspect whoever did this somehow got the voice talent from the video games to record dialogue.

Yoda apparently being voiced by an old woman is the head scratcher though.

I really want to hear Vader in the final scenes now!

Hey- so, my friend saw the clips and said there's an audio lag whatever that means so he sent me new clips which he hopes are matched up better sound and picture-wise. He'll be able to tell whether they are. It apparently had something to do with uploading it to You Tube.

I don't know about Yoda being an old woman... maybe the Chinese see Yoda as being an old woman? LOL I don't know.

Hello, I felt the need to create an account just to discuss this topic further since I couldn't find info (or discussion) on the dub anywhere else. I've been a fan of BoTW for a while now, and when I learned there is actually a dubbed version around, it naturally sparked my interest. The fact alone that something like this exists is bizarre in its own right, but it's incredible how most of the voices are actually near-perfect. Except Yoda, who sounds surprisingly out of place compared to the others.

It's baffling how something like this could go so unnoticed when so much effort must've gone to it. Considering you own the DVD, do you have any idea where it came from? To me, the dubbing work seems way too professional to be the work of pirates. Although, if this is really fan-made, why didn't they announce it on the internet? Does the DVD case (in case it exists) provide any clues?

In any case, I hope your friend can extract more clips from the DVD, hopefully the complete movie or at least the audio track. It would be an atrocity for something as great as this to go to waste, when there are still so many potentially hilarious lines left in the movie.

I was just saying that the one with the subtitles is equally baffling, for example at the beggining the words are right there but Stars Wars becomes Star War and so on. The one with the subtitles was brought over by this guy Wintersson and he said they made it before it came out in theatres, so I don't know if it's such a stretch for people with those kind of recources. I mean, how do people still a huge Hollywood movie in the first place?

Well the timecoded version was leaked from somewhere in the postproduction pipeline. The new Harry Potter movie is the latest example of this.

I've read enough badly translated instruction manuals to believe a movie could be similarly mangled. And let's not forget "All your base are belong to us."

Sorry but this is obviously fake.

You have some evidence you wish to share with the class? ;)

Even if it's a fan made dub, (something I've actually done with chewing gum, bailing wire and a Japanese SW clone 20 years ago) it's funny as heck. And many of us here would like to get the complete dialog track.

So is the audio track something that you're looking to release in the near future, TheThirdGathers (or perhaps your friend)? Those of us who have already created our own versions of Backstroke of the West would love to add this audio track to our existing DVDs.

I actually screened Backstroke at a local sci-fi convention last April using the DVD I created and posted about in marioxb's thread. To my amazement, the theater I was showing it in was packed and we had to turn some people away because we were full.  I'm looking to show it again this year and this dubbed version would be perfect!

It's a bootleg fan edit, not studio version, that's all. It's fine if you enjoy it, I'm just saying it's not real Star Wars.

Name three projects on this board that aren't technically bootlegs. ;)

I doubt anybody thinks Lucasfilm was involved with either incarnation of Backstroke in any way.

Oh definitely not. You can tell right away by Yoda. It's a fake.

It can only be fake if it's pretending to be something it is not. It is what it is. Weird and hilarious. =P

Hey all, Merry New Year.

My friend has some time off from law school and so sent me the 2 clips he was meaning to match up better. I can't tell the difference, but there they are. Unfortunately there's still that one minute blackness at the begining of the movie. About that: I was checking out the one with the subtitles and it's hillarious how they've got the words right there scrolling by but they STILL have subtitles.

@Zion- you filled the room?? Wow, that's awesome. When do you want to show this? If my friend can't take another crack at it before break ends then spring break is a possibility. If we can get it all we'll send it to anyone who wants it. But keep in mind he already did try to do this, and not everything worked, so.... if nothing else can be obtained from the disc, you could jump between the dubbed and subtitled versions if you know how to do that. That might work at the beginning too, to start out with the subtitles. It'd be like the Wizard of Oz.

@Salsa- I'm not sure what is meant by "fake" when you're talking about something like this. What do you mean?

I don't think the blackness at the beginning is really a big issue. It would be pretty easy to use the other DVD for that part, or just take the entire audio track and match it up with the other DVD.

The convention is in April, so I'd really love to get my hands on it sometime in the next month or two so I can figure out how I want to show it.  I'll PM you my details.
