I'd imagine it's probably from a more recent anniversary screening.  Those prints are struck from the same remasters that the DVDs/Blus are sourced from.

Wait... where did you find a theater capture?! It looks pretty good from that screencap. I don't know how accurate the DVD/BD is to that but... how did you get that if you don't mind me asking?

Google searching... :D

I have to admit I like your color choices, but I'm not a fan of fake grain; it's akin to edge enhancement as far as I'm concerned, which was the "big problem" before DNR. I'd recommend starting with the TV rips rather than the Blu if you want to make changes.

I'm beginning to wonder if there's a reason they call them BluRays...

Why are movies not colored anymore, even movies that originally had color?

Hmm... I didn't realise that the color timing had changed for the HDTV masters. I did think that BTTF looked a but dull and not colorful though. I'd be interested if someone undergoes the color timing restoration project.

Has anyone else noticed that the end credits for the first film on Blu-Ray seem to be incorrectly displayed? They appear to be vertically squished and I don't recall them ever looking this way on any past transfer I've ever seen.

I know they changed a few things back to the way they were in the theatrical release like the "Coming Summer 1990" tag in Part II so I don't know for sure if this was an intentional change or not, but it certainly doesn't look like it.

I didn't want to start an entirely new topic for this but I've never seen this issue addressed anywhere.

Yeah, the squashed credits confused the heck out of me too. They never looked like that before.

If you're going back to the original camera negative (o-neg) for your source (which has the most detail), you immediately lose all the color timing.  To preserve the original color timing, you need the final interpositive print that was used to make the dupe negative that release prints were struck from.  Problem there is dupe grain due to the fact that it's a couple generations away from the o-neg.

So, to get the low-grain, super-sharp look that the average consumer expects from HD material, you can either scan the IP and DNR the hell out of it, or you can scan the o-neg and color grade it again from scratch.

"...you can either scan the IP and DNR the hell out of it..."

I think that is what Universal aways do.

It seems to me, with BTTF, that they scanned the o-neg, color graded it to get relatively close to the original color timing, then proceeded to DNR the hell out of it...

I'm interested in these HDTV captures. Makes me wish Universal would go back, make 4K resolution scans without DNR and re-release the Blu-ray Trilogy. Also would be great if they could offer a disc exchange program.

Are there any comparison shots?

I saw Part 2's Blu at the theatre a little while ago, and I didn't really notice much DNR...

Since Back to the Future is my all-time favorite movie I'm still very interested in this project.

I'd be interested in the Edited for TV audio if anybody was able to find it.

I guess I could make my own by inserting silence or a bleep over the swear words, but sometimes TV versions manage to keep the background sound as well which I might be able to do in adobe Audition if I play around, but I'm really not an audio guy.

sometimes of course TV edits insert "alternative" dialogue dubbed by someone who sounds nothing like the original actor, but any audio that makes these films closer to G rated would be good. I have watched them with the kids unedited and made loud throat clearing sounds where I knew there to be a "Holy S@#t" or "Do we turn in to A$$holes or something?" coming, but it's easy to miss them. Sooner or later they are going to pick up on some of the language.

I too would be curious to see the original edited version from network TV. Later cable airings didn't use all of the alternate TV takes.

I know that the alternate Biff life "You caused 300 bucks damage to my car, you son of a butthead" was not there when TBS showed the movie in the 90s - it was just "You caused 300 bucks damage to my car, you son of a [muted]".

Does anybody have a tape of the original NBC broadcast from 1989?

I could ask a friend if he has the "Holy Jeez" edit of 1?

Somewhat offtopic:

I don't suppose there's an HD version of uncropped version of entire trilogy, is there?

Would love to have that one in HD as I grew up watching it and whenever I see widescreen version I just can't help but feel constantly that stuff is missing...

Granted, in some shots you actually get to see more of the picture in widescreen, but in most you end up losing more than you gain.

I doubt will ever be a full screen HD release of anything, let alone BTTF.

There is a Full Screen DVD release of the Trilogy though, Which is probably the best quality release there will be considering P&S/Full Screen is pretty much dead.

I actually have this release as I also grew up with the full screen versions as well and at the time because of the highly publicized framing errors of the Widescreen release, of which I also had but never sent in for corrected replacements, So I picked up a used copy of the Full Screen set like a year later at a Video Game Shop.
