Welcome GS! Thanks for sharing that with us.

I just purchased "Alien" on DVD; now it has both the directors cut and the original version on one single DVD. I presume it just plays the same versions, adding or subtracting certain scenes as required. Why can't Lucasfilm do this? Surely they have the knowhow? I also liked the introduction to the Directors cut, in which Ridley Scott very humbly said that he hoped we agreed with the changes he'd made in that version. Just imagine Lucas doing something like that...

As for me, I have decided just to stick with my VCR tapes for now. If the opportunity comes along, I will get a bootleg version, perhaps from someone who has posted in the forums here, but I'm not too fussed.

I'm not going to be buying this set, but would like to see what's on the supplemental disc. I would really rather invest my money in a bootleg version of the "Original" trilogy, but I'm not sure where I'd find a good one. I'll probably just buy the VHS version for now instead of this "offering".

I'm going bootleg myself, but not off of e-bay. There's a huge topic under General Star Wars Discussion here on the site that takes forever to wade through, but is the most informative place I know of (and unfortunately, that's not saying a lot :-) ) regarding bootlegs. This is definitely one of those purchases that you want to do your homework on before buying. When the September release comes, I'll borrow ROTJ and the bonus disc off of a friend. I mainly just want to yell obscenities at George Lucas as I see how he's butchering Jedi for this new release, and I wouldn't mind seeing the two-and-a-half hour documentary on the bonus disc, but that's all I'm interested in.

Adding and subtracting scenes in Alien was easy because there is only about 5 minutes difference. With Star Wars putting both versions on one disc would have a total of over 3 hours of movie. Thats just with the 1997 Special Edition since the DVDs will include addition changes it would be even longer. That would result at a slightly reduced bit rate.

I think you're right, Jimbo. I've heard that the seamless branching would be a mess with all of the changes between the originals and SEs, which is unfortunate, because I feel Lucas is probably just using that as another excuse not to release the originals.

I assume you've watched the SE version first, right?
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

Hadn't heard about the revisions of The Hobbit myself. Quite interesting. I wonder if some library out there still has a dusty ol' copy of the book before the altered vers came out? I'll have to research that.

ricarleite i've seen the SE version of both and hated the new cloud city.... but didnt mind the sarlac all that much....
i mean i would prefer to have both versions the way they were.... because im sure there are things i would like to see on both discs....

but just having the originals the way i saw is what i really want.... i mean i want my kids to see these movies the way i saw them... i want them to know why i have over like 5 grand in star wars toys all unopened in my closet... lol

i just think that its most important to keep the originals available no matter what happens....
i can even go as far as saying that i think the original trilogy release would outsell the SE release anyday...

any takers?

The new Cloud city rocked. The cloustrophobic environment of the original version was always lacking. The city feels so much more alive now. Hell I can hardly believe I ever liked Cloud City in its lacking original form.

cloud city in the SE looks like every other city to me in the Star Wars universe.... before it looked like a city in the clouds...
and it still looked CG in almost every scene...

i still stand by "if it aint broken, dont fix it"

I always liked the changes in Cloud City. I liked seeing more background in the windows and I liked the extended Falcon escort scene. This scene was one I never really complained about in the SE. If it's gone for an OT-OV release, I won't whine, but the scene itself wasn't worth bitching about like the scream or Greedo shooting first.
