BOYCOTT (the 2004 OT SE DVD release) — Page 2

jimbo, I'm talking about the footage that was cut from the firefights aboard the DeathStar, because they were 'too violent' for the 90s. That's plain and simple - censorship.

Okay, maybe I missed something here... ANH SE was censored/edited for violence?

Yap. They elegantly edited out a few frames to make it 'less violent'. I think Neo pointed this out first.

If you watch closely snippets of this scene were excised where frames showed the guards taking laser blaster hits in their chest that Lucas either viewed as too violent or offensive and thought the film would loose it's appeal to children and concerned adults. By removing these shots he is in essence performing an act on the level of P.C. stupidity of Spielberg's digital removal of FBI agent's guns and insertion of Walkie-Talkies in the ET special edition! Obviously after 20 years of living with and loving the original trilogy we aren't prepared to deal with the kind of intense graphic violence of a firecracker popping on the front of some actors costume!! Next we'll see Spielberg re-release G-rated versions of Schlinder's List and Saving Private Ryan so as not to offend anyone.

The most obvious one is the death of the officer who's trying to grab his gun from the desk, but is hit before he can get it.

I hardly noticed that cencorship on the death star. Its the same as the censorship in Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Some scenes were censored a bit and I didn't like it but such small unnoticable censorship is not enough to boycott a movie as great as Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Anyone who could deny themselves one of the best movies over a couple missing frames needs to rethink.

I never realized that and I don't remember reading that post. Thanks for the 411. And, no, it's not enough to make me not enjoy the flick. The SE on the other hand...

The boycott is just a tool to show that many of us want the original theatrical cuts as well as the special editions on DVD. It's just a way to counter Jim Ward's idea of commercial dictatorship by narrowing down the choice down to what George Lucas wants us to buy.

For me this has become an issue of how customers are treated by Lucasfilm - not about which version is 'better'.

Oh, I agree. LFL is showing no respect for those of us who have supported it over the years. Yes, many of the arguments (read "debates") on this site have focused on which is better. But, maybe we should give up that fight due to personal opinions that will never change and just focus on respect issues.

LMAO, just picked up this snippet from a tf.n ep3 spoiler article (nono, don't fear it's a non spoilage snippet). I thought it kinda fit the occasion:

George was also speaking on how one loses their humanity with gaining power, and that elements of Episode 3 are about this struggle within Anakin's world.

How true, how true.

jimbo 1st off which scenes did they censor in Roger Rabbit?

and 2 how in the hell can you say it's the same story, same movie, better effects.

you are so wrong about the effects!!
they sucked ass... you can tell when your looking at a CG character so hard!! ie Jabba, the two dancing dumbasses in jabba's palace in jedi...
you definatly lose the argument there!

same movie... semi except for the hundreds of effects added, dialogue added and scenes cut!
another loss for you!

and same story?
right... cuz greedo did take a shot a han first right? or Han could step on Jabba's tail with getting nothing less than a cheesy facial expression?
don't say its the same story... cuz generally it is about the same topic but with a whole load of other shit added in....
so i will give you some credit here because your half right... but didnt take into consideration all the changes which did in fact change the story...

Changes I would like to see if Mr Lucas got his hands on LOTR:

1. The folk dancing scene at Bilbo's party replaced by a most amusing break dancing sequence, featuring a digitized Sam and Frodo and a rock band made up of Elves, Orcs and Tree herders.

2. Golem jumps into the lava in a selfless attempt to save the others. He screams as he falls.

3. Add more tree herders to to thos scenes in The Two Towers. Add some humourous CGI such as a big tree knocking a little tree on the head, or maybe kicking him into the air. Hilarious!

4. New scene added at the end of ROTK, showing the orcs celebrating the demise of Sauronin the previously unseen Kingdom of Orcs. Oooh pretty!

Any other ideas?

Call me ignorant, but how do you herd trees?

Those who don't know don't care. Anyone who cares about the movies or which version comes out already knows Lucases plan and have already made there descign on whether to buy it or not. The sales of the DVDs are going to be plenty high.

Thought the boycott idea does still sound great in some repects (thank the maker I got my Faces LD 2 days ago), perhaps buying it would prove a point as well. GL probably thinks of us, if he thinks of us, as spoiled brats. No matter what he does, we will never be happy. So he claims the moral high ground as an "artist" that has the "right" to pick one of his children and throw the other to the street. However, what happens when we say the following. "Gl, we bought the prequals. We bought the SE set in September. We politely petioned you to simply release the 'rough cuts' of your films, the original theatrical films on DVD, just to preserve your art. And once you do, we will still be buying, you know that. Otherwise, why have we continued to fuel Star Wars in the first place?"

Now honestly, after all that, who COMPLETELY has the moral high ground? Who will the film critics respect? Him or us? I think you know the answer to that and that is the reason I will be here, petioning for the original cuts until the masters are completely gone or I am dead. I am in it for the long haul. And regardless if you buy these sets in September, aren't you still in this? Isn't the classics of the 70's and 80's as they originally were worth fighting for? If you answer that as a no or you don't know the answer, perhaps you shouldn't be here in the first place. May the Force Be with you.

What was censored out of Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

(I've already bought the DVD, but I didn't notice anything missing).

Well spoken, Jedi Master DJR. My allegiance lies with the original theatrical cuts and I am more willing to follow Jay on this 'damn fool idealistic crusade' than ever. Thanks to Jim Ward's 'kind words', I became very serious about this. Since then, it has become a matter of fighting corporate dictutainment.

Two things. One when baby Herman walks between the ladys dress his fingers have been modified so he no longer pocks her vagina. The other is Jessica Rabbits dress was modified in one scene so you no longer see her ass.

Blunt answer.

But that's pretty much what happens. They also censored some of the scribblings on the bathroom wall that Valient falls out of in Toontown.

My stance on revising fan edits.

lol, I can already see Luke frantically browsing through ebay and making phone calls, looking for the original cuts of RR.

That would be stupid to go through that over a couple frames.
